i frankly don't think that the idea of a full-time woman host on jeopardy will sit well with sony's test audiences; a significant portion of the fanbase is old and bigoted

In the online discourse about who should host, I've observed a divide between those who see hosting as executing a set of skills and those who see it as representing a set of values. The former have treated the guest hosts as a series of auditions that can be picked apart in granular detail ("He fumbled over his words on the Daily Double but seemed at ease during the contestant interviews"). The latter may not have even watched the guest hosts but have an affectionate attitude toward the show as a cultural institution and are concerned primarily with how well a potential host lives up to their idea of what Jeopardy! means to them.

This article kind of cuts through all of that by making the point that both of those factions represent a small percentage of the Jeopardy!'s actual viewership (old people!), and what Sony really needs to figure out is who it wants the show's audience to be going forward:

i agree with that and they would be wise to aim at a younger audience with quarterly rotation of Levar / Jennings / Buzzy imo though they really need to add at least one female host... why did Julia Collins not get an audition?

Bialik to host the first three weeks back and will be followed by TBA guest hosts.

Has Laura Coates ever said anything about Alex Trebek's desire for her to host the show? Assuming she's not averse to giving it a whirl, they should definitely invite her to be a part of the next string of guest hosts.

That's like fourth on the list of her most pressing issues (see her anti-vaxx/pseudoscience history, her promotion of weird home-birth views, and saying women who don't dress "modestly" may invite sexual assault).

Right. I am reading through Richards’ comments now. Tasteless and insensitive stuff but it’s not like he was the only person making jokes like that in 2014.

It’s good for Jeopardy’s sake to escape this dark cloud but I understand why, in the first place, they didn’t anticipate these comments being a problem. Bialik seems more problematic honestly but she also is a better host imo.

I too understand that not knowing a podcast exists means you don’t expect comments made on it to be a problem
