man - I thought - what if we're in a lake! Big city in a lake? But then I found out the lake beneath Mexico City has been filled up centuries ago :-/

StanM, Tuesday, 13 July 2021 09:25 (four years ago)

how old is this photo? ;-)

StanM, Tuesday, 13 July 2021 09:26 (four years ago)

It was one of those articles about funiculars that made me think it could be Hong Kong...looks like the terrain and whatnot is very similar to the Ngong Ping 360.

Linda and Jodie Rocco (map), Tuesday, 13 July 2021 12:19 (four years ago)

ha nevermind, the foliage isn't right for it

Linda and Jodie Rocco (map), Tuesday, 13 July 2021 12:20 (four years ago)

it could be Korea? Seoul's cityscape is similar, but it's not big enough for there, so... Daegu perhaps?

Neil S, Tuesday, 13 July 2021 12:44 (four years ago)

feels like the port on the left is too big to be that far inland, but SK does have a lot of cities near the sea, good idea

StanM, Tuesday, 13 July 2021 12:59 (four years ago)

mmmmm - Busan immediately doesn't feel very wrong

StanM, Tuesday, 13 July 2021 13:02 (four years ago)

It does seem like there are at least a few South Korean cities with cable car installations not unlike the one in the photo.

o. nate, Tuesday, 13 July 2021 20:06 (four years ago)

I give up :-(

StanM, Thursday, 15 July 2021 04:01 (four years ago)

Nice, how did you get it?

nashwan, Thursday, 15 July 2021 15:46 (four years ago)

It was maybe only the 15th South Korean city I looked at. The harbour helped

nice!

StanM, Thursday, 15 July 2021 16:10 (four years ago)

I saw everything from Busan to Jindo - if only I had kept at it :(

StanM, Thursday, 15 July 2021 16:13 (four years ago)

South Korea has a lot of cities!

o. nate, Thursday, 15 July 2021 17:54 (four years ago)

Doesn't look like there's any magnificent square fortification round a hill, just tower blocks all blurred together by the distance.

At Easter I had a fall. I don't know whether to laugh or cry (ledge), Thursday, 15 July 2021 19:37 (four years ago)

yeah, it only looked like it was one big complex on that first picture.

StanM, Thursday, 15 July 2021 20:11 (four years ago)

can I just.. cherry blossom, you're very good at this. thank you.

cherry blossom, Monday, 19 July 2021 21:00 (four years ago)

Hm, thought the graffiti on the building on the right would be useful, but just seems to be some initials.

A viking of frowns, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 19 July 2021 21:07 (four years ago)

Tells us it's somewhere the Roman alphabet is used at least

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 19 July 2021 21:10 (four years ago)

Can't quite figure out what's going on with that building -- clearly occupied (towels hanging off some balconies) but many of the windows are missing? Partially abandoned?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 19 July 2021 21:10 (four years ago)

Going to have a wild stab in the dark guess - Luanda

A viking of frowns, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 19 July 2021 21:10 (four years ago)

it’s this building in Lunik IX in Košice, Slovakia

fuck, I've been to Košice! just for a few hours on the way to Michalovce, still should really have made a better guess.

A viking of frowns, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 19 July 2021 21:24 (four years ago)

oh wow - that was fast

StanM, Monday, 19 July 2021 21:33 (four years ago)

how do you possibly look at that and go "oh, kosice slovakia"

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 19 July 2021 21:35 (four years ago)

it looked a) extremely poor, but also b) very (Central) European (the foliage especially), which made me think that it might be a Romani neighbourhood (the people in the picture seemed to fit in with that) (also, we have had a different Romani neighbourhood in Bulgaria (?) last year iirc) - googled and pictures of Lunik IX came up

Even with picking one of the less distinctive buildings I had a feeling it might go quickly!

cherry blossom, Monday, 19 July 2021 21:56 (four years ago)

But maybe not quite that quickly!

cherry blossom, Monday, 19 July 2021 21:58 (four years ago)

took me a while, but this is the spot:

shit romani are not very well taken care of are they - sorry for u.s. dumb

Linda and Jodie Rocco (map), Monday, 19 July 2021 22:28 (four years ago)

I read recently that things have turned around a bit in Lunik IX since 2019 with the introduction of a new mayor. Though I also read there are a number of anti-romani walls in different parts of the city - couldn't see one here but then Lunix IX is a stub and doesn't connect to the rest of the city

cherry blossom, Tuesday, 20 July 2021 07:06 (four years ago)

xpost - this explains it quite well: https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/campaigns/2015/04/roma-in-europe-11-things-you-always-wanted-to-know-but-were-afraid-to-ask/

Looks like a place that's obsessed with the American flag, but the roads don't look like they're in a civilized country...

StanM, Tuesday, 20 July 2021 11:00 (four years ago)
