His fight scene in Darker than Amber, mentioned in the obit above, is incredible.

Seconding this, I remember the intensity of this movie's fights blowing my mind back in the 70s.

Profiles in Liquid Courage (WmC), Friday, 9 July 2021 20:07 (four years ago)

I mean, in lesser hands for delivery this would not work at all, and after Mako's amazing introduction this is what fully sells the rest of the film:

Fire and wind come from the sky, from the gods of the sky. But Crom is your god, Crom and he lives in the earth. Once, giants lived in the Earth, Conan. And in the darkness of chaos, they fooled Crom, and they took from him the enigma of steel. Crom was angered. And the Earth shook. Fire and wind struck down these giants, and they threw their bodies into the waters, but in their rage, the gods forgot the secret of steel and left it on the battlefield. We who found it are just men. Not gods. Not giants. Just men. The secret of steel has always carried with it a mystery. You must learn its riddle, Conan. You must learn its discipline. For no one - no one in this world can you trust. Not men, not women, not beasts...This you can trust.

John Le Mesurier's widow Joan has died aged 90. A lovely lady. Her affair with actor Tony Hancock is well documented including in the drama Hancock & Joan. I shared some happy time with her. Her biog title is a nod to Hancock's Half Hour - title of the book in The Missing Page. pic.twitter.com/uutGGIVlVZ

Alba, Sunday, 18 July 2021 13:45 (four years ago)

Aside from the Stewart Lee routine I mainly know him as the host of that crossword based game show and also when I was a kid I had a joke book called “Tom O’Connor’s Book of Jokes” to which he contributed a foreword where he explained the theory of humour thusly:

a good opening joke is to come out and say “I was driving down a one way street and a policeman stopped me and said ‘didn’t you see the arrows?’ and I said ‘no, I didn’t even see the indians!’”

(Have just learned this is a Tommy Cooper joke)

A better opening joke is to come out and say “I was driving down a one way street and a policeman stopped me and said ‘didn’t you see the Indians?’ and I said ‘no, I didn’t even see the arrows!’”

And the best opening joke is to do the switched-around version then wait a few seconds and say to someone offscreen “I don’t think they’ve noticed”

For some reason that has stuck in my head and that is why I am so funny to this day
