this is how politics works in the real world guys

plax (ico), Thursday, 8 July 2021 17:56 (four years ago)

if i accepted free tickets to a sporting event because of my nothing-to-do-with-sports job i’d be sacked. ok probably not sacked but disciplined.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 8 July 2021 18:10 (four years ago)

maybe even dunked on on social media

conrad, Thursday, 8 July 2021 18:19 (four years ago)

one can dream!

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 8 July 2021 18:23 (four years ago)

Contra what the media landscape would suggest, football fans do not say "It's coming home", to mean "England will win".

For one thing, most England fans, most of the time, don't think that England will win.

For another, "It's coming home" does not really mean "England will win". What it originally meant, I think, was: "a major soccer tournament is going to be held in a nation that claims to have invented soccer".

TBH my first sentence is sadly false. The kind of football fans who ring 606 with Robbie Savage *do* say it. But maybe they do this because they think it's the kind of thing Robbie Savage would say.

People should not say it.

They especially should not say it to mean: "England will win".

the pinefox, Thursday, 8 July 2021 23:21 (four years ago)

i always just assumed "it" was "a latter-day proxy for global hegemony"

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 8 July 2021 23:24 (four years ago)

Is Robbie Savage likely to say 'it's coming home'? Ypu might have noticed he is somewhat Welsh.

I turned on the radio yesterday and Baddiel was talking about "Englishness" with Justin Webb and that was enough of that. I remember about 12 years ago listening to 606 and it was probably Savage's radio debut and he was co-hosting the show with Neil Warnock. And I thought he was so completely terrible that the BBC wouldn't be asking him back in a hurry, but that was when I still erroneously thought that BBC radio had higher standards than commercial stations like Talk Sport.

MoMsnet (calzino), Friday, 9 July 2021 07:22 (four years ago)

Well, seeing as this has become the defacto Euro thread...

The level of expectation running out there right now, I sense there'll be a lot of fans/media crying like German schoolgirls if it doesn't happen, along with Bojo and Starmzy running away from the postmatch team meet..

Hope I'm wrong, but.

Mark G, Friday, 9 July 2021 07:30 (four years ago)

I think it will be more a case of the PM and Kieth trying to outdo each other with performative displays of how "gutted" for the lads they are. Boris really won't give a shit and Kieth will attempt some fake magnanimity through gritted teeth and mention that he's an Arsenal fan.

MoMsnet (calzino), Friday, 9 July 2021 07:56 (four years ago)

I will love it if Kieth does a "well done Italy" tweet, absolutely love it

Southgate Serves Imperialism (Noodle Vague), Friday, 9 July 2021 08:05 (four years ago)

Oh he will, won’t he…

Mark G, Friday, 9 July 2021 08:07 (four years ago)

St Neots East (Huntingdonshire), council by-election result:

IND: 42.5% (+42.5)
GRN: 33.4% (+33.4)
LDEM: 11.6% (-15.9)
CON: 8.0% (-24.0)
LAB: 4.4% (-36.0)

Independent GAIN from Labour.

— Britain Elects (@BritainElects) July 9, 2021

Labour are back!

calzino, Friday, 9 July 2021 08:47 (four years ago)

St Neots is weird, that local group won everything there in the May elections too, same happened in Herefordshire, suppose this will likely be a trend until there is an actual opposition.

A viking of frowns, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 9 July 2021 09:02 (four years ago)

Unbelievable but we've seen these given all season

Honiton St Michael's (East Devon), council by-election result:

LAB: 58.0% (+58.0)
CON: 37.5% (-15.5)
LDEM: 4.5% (-42.5)

Labour GAIN from Liberal Democrat.

— Britain Elects (@BritainElects) July 9, 2021

nashwan, Friday, 9 July 2021 09:03 (four years ago)

So, Labour didn't stand last time?

Mark G, Friday, 9 July 2021 09:05 (four years ago)

Too busy pandering to lacists

Southgate Serves Imperialism (Noodle Vague), Friday, 9 July 2021 09:10 (four years ago)

A1 Honiton knowledge, my brother was on local telly with some lace in the 1970s.

This ward is the west end of Honiton of course, a mix of the leafy and the not so leafy. We were strictly Eastside when we lived there.

Tim, Friday, 9 July 2021 09:24 (four years ago)

It's basically a gap year seat; Lib Dem incumbent stood down "to focus on his university studies" and the Labour winner is 19. He says he wants to "thank every single person who voted for me" which given that it's Honiton will take him most of the morning. https://t.co/j9JmzGO8jK

That's the look of electability you luddite

Southgate Serves Imperialism (Noodle Vague), Friday, 9 July 2021 10:35 (four years ago)

They don't care much for the two party system in Honiton, they'll vote for any nice young clean cut looking chap, as long as he doesn't cuss or smoke weed.

MoMsnet (calzino), Friday, 9 July 2021 10:38 (four years ago)

And is sound on the jam and cream question

Southgate Serves Imperialism (Noodle Vague), Friday, 9 July 2021 10:42 (four years ago)

lol!

MoMsnet (calzino), Friday, 9 July 2021 10:46 (four years ago)

I like this though is Batley similar to Hartlepool? The differences would explain why, despite Lab's vote being similarly suppressed, it still retained the seat.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 9 July 2021 11:09 (four years ago)

The end of the piece is pissing in the wind. I'll be surprised if Lab break 30% at the next election.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 9 July 2021 11:10 (four years ago)

The 'vote for us and we'll keep your hospital open, vote for them and we'll close it' approach from the Tories can work pretty much anywhere.

nashwan, Friday, 9 July 2021 11:12 (four years ago)

If Lab re-made the country from 45-70s the Tories have chipped away at that ever since.

New Lab never stopped it and now it's pretty much dead. Other movements will have to take its place.

xp I think that will have some limited success in the long-term because it's about running the NHS down.

The game is about preparing for climate change so off-shoring detention centres and the like. More jobs via jails, detaining anyone who opposes or even protests.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 9 July 2021 11:18 (four years ago)

The phenomenon of a working-class red wall is an ideological concoction that benefits Labour’s enemies. It makes little sociological or psephological sense today, and the fragment of the past it reflects is one of Tory working classes. Yet this group has come to define how Labour thinks of the working class.

it's come to define the deluded and bigoted shite Labour talks which is convenient for bigoted right-wing Labour MP's, but I don't think the party is remotely interested in appealing to whatever is the working classes now because that involves effort and invokes the wrath of right-wing press barons who they live to serve. No magic money tree, take your 1.8 % pay rise and be grateful for it scumbag. You've nowhere else to go.

MoMsnet (calzino), Friday, 9 July 2021 11:20 (four years ago)

now that Mandelson is Kieth's de facto chief political adviser the decline that Corbyn and McD turned around will hasten at a much faster rate. There won't be any "populist" policy offers, just more empty slogans, more dogwhistle racism and they'll be praying for the forlorn hope that Tory support craters worse than it did in '97 by some fucking occult magic. I think that is about as sophisticated as their planning is.

MoMsnet (calzino), Friday, 9 July 2021 11:39 (four years ago)

Southgate Serves Imperialism (Noodle Vague), Friday, 9 July 2021 11:50 (four years ago)

At work we’re getting a little freaked out about the probability that a shitload of staff are gonna go down during our busy time in a few weeks when we will get a load of temp workers in to help, all of whom will be young & unvaccinated. We have managed to stay open for the whole of the pandemic without any outbreaks but the increasing prevalence + transmissibility of delta is making it feel almost inevitable. Given how insane the workload is in the summer it would be kind of a disaster to lose even a few people for 10 days & more importantly we want to protect the welfare of staff so we are racking our brains trying to think if there’s anything we can do that we’re not doing - we will keep our mask & social distancing &c in place and ask ppl to test but idk not feeling great about things

lol & I just remembered what this ramble was apropos - in light of all this I was thinking this morning “I guess I’ll have to reinstall that dumb app I deleted from my phone” & immediately they announce they are going to make it even more useless ffs (will prob still get it)

The 💨 that shook the barlow (wins), Friday, 9 July 2021 17:18 (four years ago)

Our work has sent out a very carefully worded memo amounting to “the govt might be relaxing everything but we’re fucking not, we don’t want you getting it and not being able to work. Stay home”

I love the way the little shit goes full Maybot under the slightest pressure to answer a question properly, but really I genuinely wish death on him. Corbyn's most fatal mistake was letting this weaselly little scumbag back into his shadow cabinet when he resigned. He was a plant from the start. The only completely out of sight hypothetical here is "under a Kier Starmer govt" lol

There is a real sense the Prime Minister has fractured trust in Northern Ireland.

He needs to be honest, and show the responsibility this moment demands.

I went to Northern Ireland to listen and to call for serious, practical solutions.https://t.co/GMefCzVxtf
