I think it was hilarious, and I'm a little frightened ONCE AGAIN at how bad everyone needs that character to stay in high school.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 1 February 2007 18:41 (seventeen years ago) link

haha xpost

I mean, Bell can make a whole lot of stuff seem convincingly awesome, but then there are certain things that are just ... and then she hits them so valiantly and confidently anyway.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 1 February 2007 18:41 (seventeen years ago) link

In any other actress's hands Veronica Mars would probably be completely insufferable! She's, umm, particularly good at being punchably smug / clever / quippy in a way that does not inspire punching impulses -- like, quite the opposite.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 1 February 2007 18:43 (seventeen years ago) link

(okay, Haikunym I am fine with Veronica as a sexual being! remember during the second season when the fact that she had bought some boob-size-increasing serum came out, and she answered her phone "Chesty LaRue"? that was awesome. I miss her wry take on the sex stuff, I guess. also I have not seen this episode so maybe in context the pelvic thrust is not horribly embarrassing, but I have my doubts.) high school is a better setting for this kind of show, though. that's just science.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Thursday, 1 February 2007 18:46 (seventeen years ago) link

your science, my fiction

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 1 February 2007 18:48 (seventeen years ago) link

what was disturbing about the pelvic thrust is that she was showing her dad stripper moves.

milo z (mlp), Thursday, 1 February 2007 18:54 (seventeen years ago) link

oh god

horseshoe (horseshoe), Thursday, 1 February 2007 18:54 (seventeen years ago) link

I watched the whole of the Reefer Madness musical because of her.

Strangely, I don't think I've seen her much in any kind of non-acting setting: I think I only saw one half-minute interview clip when the show debuted, in which she seemed ... really hard-assed, actually.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 1 February 2007 18:57 (seventeen years ago) link

she has the same birthday as I do! and was born in the same city! I luv her.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Thursday, 1 February 2007 18:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh wait, I had a point, which was that she has a decent ability to do incredibly goony physical stuff, which I think is what comes out occasionally on Veronica Mars. Except that Veronica Mars isn't really supposed to be that goony, so it's this weird reined-in thing where you're not sure exactly what combination of goony/cool they're looking for.

Umm, goony:

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 1 February 2007 19:02 (seventeen years ago) link

she was great as a teenage hooker in Deadwood.

milo z (mlp), Thursday, 1 February 2007 19:03 (seventeen years ago) link

i couldn't get into reefer madness at all.

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Thursday, 1 February 2007 19:05 (seventeen years ago) link

Nor could I. Nobody should camp up camp classics. Also WTF with Catholic stuff in the church scene. I foolishly thought Neve Campbell dancing and Bell being goony would make it worthwhile, but not really. (I was not expecting any perv-appeal from Bell in a latex devil suit, or whatever, and my expectations were correct, it just doesn't work that way.)

Do I need to crow about how I made geeked freaked out in front of KB again?

c(,,c) (Leee), Thursday, 1 February 2007 19:22 (seventeen years ago) link

She's quite a different person than KB IRL.

c(,,c) (Leee), Thursday, 1 February 2007 19:24 (seventeen years ago) link

She doesn't solve crime in her spare time?

milo z (mlp), Thursday, 1 February 2007 19:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Never had a best friend sleep with Harry Hamlin?

milo z (mlp), Thursday, 1 February 2007 19:26 (seventeen years ago) link

KB is airier, more flighty. Strange, VM is to me a realer person to me, but then I see her more often than KB nowadays.

c(,,c) (Leee), Thursday, 1 February 2007 19:31 (seventeen years ago) link

- Hi, Nabisco. Here's a video of Kristen Bell doing a song-and-dance number in a latex devil suit. Do you think it will be hot?
- No.
- Okay. Here's a video of Kristen Bell shotgunning beer and giving noogies to twelve-year-old nerds. Do you think it will be hot?
- YES.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 1 February 2007 20:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Apparently Dick isn't going to be on the show anymore? He's living in Africa running an orphanage according to this.

milo z (mlp), Thursday, 1 February 2007 21:09 (seventeen years ago) link

Considering it says that his work started in 2004, and the article is from November, that's gotta be a different Ryan Hansen.

clotpoll (Clotpoll), Thursday, 1 February 2007 21:36 (seventeen years ago) link

No, that's the same one. He's just now made it permanent or something.

episode was fine, though if you watch this for the WHODUNIT aspect it was pretty EZ from the get-go. fortunately, that's not why i watch the show!

The Ultimate Conclusion (lokar), Thursday, 8 February 2007 01:31 (seventeen years ago) link

I watch for Kristen Bell, because she is a very good actress in a very good part. I watch because Neptune is a very interesting fictional town with a lot more layers to it than anything else on TV. I watch because there is funny dialogue. I watch because a lot of the secondary characters are better than lead characters on most other shows. I watch because the pop culture references amuse me, even (and especially) when they are gratuitous. I watch because I actually like the idea of a high school-based show becoming a college-based show, and because the version of college here is a lot closer to actual college since anything since "Undeclared." And I watch because Weevil kicks ass.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 8 February 2007 01:39 (seventeen years ago) link

omg NOW YOU MADE ME ALL EMO you bastards

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 8 February 2007 01:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Just scroll up and look at the pelvic thrust for a few minutes.

Tuesdays With Morimoto (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 8 February 2007 01:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Neptune was once interesting, now it's a non-factor. Out of college, class distinctions no longer seem to exist for Veronica.

milo z (mlp), Thursday, 8 February 2007 02:06 (seventeen years ago) link

milo z you are wrong, neptune is still very much a factor. but you are trying so hard to be disappointed that I won't try any more.

i was trying the other day to remember what it was we agreed on that one time. do you remember?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 8 February 2007 02:10 (seventeen years ago) link

it's a very small factor

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Thursday, 8 February 2007 02:12 (seventeen years ago) link

hahaha YOUR AWESOME ARGUMENTS HAVE CONVINCED ME

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 8 February 2007 02:14 (seventeen years ago) link

How is Neptune a factor? The show is now 99.9999% Hearst College (itself devoid of personality), the secondary characters caricatures (Piz, the feminists) with no relation to the town. What makes New Nepune different, how is it a factor (ie why couldn't it be set in any unnamed wealthy beachfront locale?)

milo z (mlp), Thursday, 8 February 2007 02:15 (seventeen years ago) link

haikunym, there is another show that i think you would like. it is called studio 60 on the sunset strip.

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Thursday, 8 February 2007 02:21 (seventeen years ago) link

First of all, it's not New Neptune. it's still just Neptune. Secondly, the O'Dells and Logan and Dick and Madison still live in swanky places and get their kids out of jams with the law (and rape people like that one dude), and the Mars and Weevil and Wallace (the scholarship thing, which never would have happened but whatever) do not.

I actually think the "rich vs. poor" thing is an oversimplified way to see Neptune -- now we get all the college vs. town stuff, Lamb having to suck up to some college people but loving to bust college students, the way others look at Veronica for being a commuter student, etc.

Cousin Larry I think there is a show you would like, it is called Kiss My Ass.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 8 February 2007 02:24 (seventeen years ago) link

is that on BET?

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Thursday, 8 February 2007 02:25 (seventeen years ago) link

wow you just went from something to something else

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 8 February 2007 02:26 (seventeen years ago) link

;)

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 8 February 2007 02:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Personally, I thought the second season (okay, mainly the Big Arc) was a shambles. This one is just about the same for me. I don't get excited about watching it, but I generally enjoy doing so when I get around to it.

The Ultimate Conclusion (lokar), Thursday, 8 February 2007 03:08 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, my patience for the show was tested a lot more toward the end of the 2nd season with the pregnant girl in a coma and Duncan running off with the baby, etc. this season has been pretty reliable by comparison, i think. KB definitely keeps it watchable during the weaker plotlines. I saw her on I think Conan once and she definitely comes across as completely different from her character, different voice, different mannerisms.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Thursday, 8 February 2007 14:43 (seventeen years ago) link

KB is airier, more flighty. Strange, VM is to me a realer person to me, but then I see her more often than KB nowadays.

I had that same feeling when I saw Sarah Michelle Gellar on a talk show for the first time, after watching Buffy for awhile.
