"yeah that's...unexpected"

Hartlepool was 42.7 %

beyond parody

The Labour leader is expected to come out fighting after the byelection, with a string of public appearances and policy announcements. “We know we have work to do,” said a party source.

such strong copium before we've even seen the exit poll

calzino, Thursday, 1 July 2021 23:15 (five years ago)

Labour hold by 323! and it certainly wasn't a 70% turnout. Well that isn't going to get rid of Kieth!

BATLEY AND SPEN
Labour: 13,296
Conservative: 12,973

Turnout was 47.61% in Batley & Spen - a LONG way from what was predicted earlier. #BatleyAndSpenByelection #LDReporter

Kim Leadbeater repeatedly declines to say to the BBC whether Keir Starmer was an "asset" to the Labour Party campaign in Batley and Spen.

— Adam Bienkov (@AdamBienkov) July 2, 2021

calzino, Friday, 2 July 2021 05:51 (five years ago)

“This is just the start,” says Keir Starmer of Labour’s victory in Batley and Spen.

lol stop it, by-elections against governing Tories are supposed to be a formality for Labour - Corbz won 9 of them without any fanfare or them being reported as shock results

calzino, Friday, 2 July 2021 07:02 (five years ago)

Getting Jo Cox's sister to run almost didn't work. Bad turnout and this is a v tight marginal now. It looks like Galloway absorbed dissatisfaction from all directions.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 2 July 2021 07:25 (five years ago)

I'm astonished he got 22%

calzino, Friday, 2 July 2021 07:27 (five years ago)

but yeah it wasn't just protest votes from previous Labour voters getting on the Galloway bus.

calzino, Friday, 2 July 2021 07:30 (five years ago)

This puts down any talk of a leadership challenge for the summer until more council elections next year, maybe. They can get on with changing the rules on any challenges from the left.

Rayner is no kind of answer anyway. Very bleak.

xp = social conservatism is one hell of a drug

xyzzzz__, Friday, 2 July 2021 07:32 (five years ago)

I think you could probably work out which 7 or so simps from the SCG who were going to get behind an Angie challenge.

calzino, Friday, 2 July 2021 07:36 (five years ago)

the gall of Kieth visiting Batley today after mostly avoiding the place and blanking the Labour candidate on social media for weeks after a bad poll dropped. I hope he gets egged.

calzino, Friday, 2 July 2021 08:29 (five years ago)

Surely the cries of voter fraud are amassing from Tories

nashwan, Friday, 2 July 2021 08:35 (five years ago)

lol Georgie is threatening a legal challenge as per. Another good point is that they mobilised just about every MP and what's left of the membership to campaign in the area, come the next GE their ground game will be severely stretched and weak.

calzino, Friday, 2 July 2021 08:40 (five years ago)

fuck's sake i hope some HEAVILY REDACTED her

Take me home, Jordan Rhodes (Noodle Vague), Friday, 2 July 2021 08:45 (five years ago)

I've got More In Common with the 52.4% of Batley that looked at the reprehensible set of fascists, bullshit merchants and grifters running in this by-election and said fuck this for a game of soldiers.

calzino, Friday, 2 July 2021 09:07 (five years ago)

Lol, 324 votes

One of the most important yet little noticed bits of the messy reshuffle was @ShabanaMahmood appointment as National Campaign Coordinator. Clearly she can claim credit for this significant result.

— Paul Waugh (@paulwaugh) July 2, 2021

xyzzzz__, Friday, 2 July 2021 09:25 (five years ago)

bit of strategic genius was sending every single MP and volunteer they could into the constituency... and then just squeaking it

calzino, Friday, 2 July 2021 09:38 (five years ago)

How did that absurd turnout claim spread so easily

There's some quantity of people who voted Galloway but had he not ran would've voted Tory for those Hartlepool-like pork barrel reasons. Hopefully not that many but I'd imagine far more than 324.

nashwan, Friday, 2 July 2021 09:46 (five years ago)

I think the 70% turnout figure was correct for the postal votes only and twitter did it's thing

Labour Batley campaign source says:

“Basically built a new electoral coalition in six weeks. Lost the conservative Muslim vote over gay rights and Palestine, and won back a lot of 2019 Tory voters”

“This result shows we’re reconnecting with the wider electorate again”

the way they are spinning this is utterly vile and delusional and this is something will come back and bite them much harder in future elections, fucking wankers.

calzino, Friday, 2 July 2021 09:49 (five years ago)

yeah Galloway has become a useful idiot for Labour it seems

calzino, Friday, 2 July 2021 09:51 (five years ago)

I don't know about useful but he is undeniably an idiot.

Are Animated Dads Getting Hotter? (Tom D.), Friday, 2 July 2021 10:12 (five years ago)

Across both Hartlepool and Batley I'm seeing Labour at -7%. They won't win back the seats they lost in 2019.

But the fact is the won, so they can feed whatever story they like to Lab right ppl in the CLPs to lap up. Demonise Muslim voters and their vote will go down in other areas but they might get away with it now and then and that's enough because of a potential for white racist conservative voters. That's what they will tell themselves, not that it will happen.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 2 July 2021 10:17 (five years ago)

Lmao

It was, in effect, a Tory seat (would have been Tory in 2019 if not for pro-Brexit independent), with Galloway a Labour vote-splitter

Lol sorry my phone is playing up

Another point going almost entirely unremarked today is that this dickhead saved Labour's majority & quite possibly Starmer's job. https://t.co/c0d86BASKR

— Ally Fogg (@AllyFogg) July 2, 2021

xyzzzz__, Friday, 2 July 2021 10:33 (five years ago)

I think that disaffection with the Tories is the main factor in this result tbh. People are sick of the cunts

imago, Friday, 2 July 2021 10:57 (five years ago)

if only!

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 2 July 2021 10:59 (five years ago)

nah honestly I think we're gonna see some changes in the mood towards them

imago, Friday, 2 July 2021 11:01 (five years ago)

Lol

xyzzzz__, Friday, 2 July 2021 11:16 (five years ago)

even if you were right (and most of the national polling has the Tories something like 9 - 13 points ahead) at the moment, if say a snap election was called, the racist/austerity party of opposition would be on course to lose even more seats. And with the current direction they are going in who the fuck would even want these evil fuckers in power - they scare me more than Tories and more often than not seem to be attacking them from the right these days.

calzino, Friday, 2 July 2021 11:50 (five years ago)

Tfw there is a change in mood

As I explain, Labour in effect gained the seat from the Tories

They lie and lie some more even Eaton can't take it

Wasn't Labour's last by-election victory in Peterborough in 2019?

— George Eaton (@georgeeaton) July 2, 2021

xyzzzz__, Friday, 2 July 2021 12:06 (five years ago)

It’s not even a lie, imo, he seems to have internalised the idea that this was somehow a Tory seat that Labour had overturned rather than a Labour one they just about held on to.

The last seat Labour won from the Tories was 2012, iirc.

Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Friday, 2 July 2021 12:12 (five years ago)

Corbyn won 9 mo'fking by-elections without putting out racially divisive leaflets or smearing non-voters as racists. And also it's a joke that the undead one doesn't seem to understand something as simple as a party with the most votes winning a seat in a fptp parliamentary system of democracy. ffs he's been around long enough.

calzino, Friday, 2 July 2021 12:16 (five years ago)

Vile Islamophobia from Paul Mason in his New Statesman column on Batley and Spen.

― Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Friday, 2 July 2021 bookmarkflaglink

Isn't 'internalised the idea' by people who support Starmer another way of lying?

The idea this was a Tory seat comes from the localist independent group (which was run by a UK-per) that ran in 2019 but it could be that a lot of that went to Galloway, and that neither group are a gateway to the Tories, like the Brexit Party, say.

It's not part of the Red Wall.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 2 July 2021 12:39 (five years ago)

Payne's deleted his tweet and apologised for the error.

I read Rentoul as saying it was 'effectively' a Tory seat and a Labour gain and Payne having heard this line so often he thought it was literally a Tory seat since 2019, but idk.

Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Friday, 2 July 2021 12:45 (five years ago)

Bless. This is the happiest he’s been since the night of the riots. pic.twitter.com/jk7BI3yobw

lol I heard a report on the news that Kieth kept repeating "LABOUR IS BACK!" to all questions.

I read Rentoul as saying it was 'effectively' a Tory seat and a Labour gain and Payne having heard this line so often he thought it was literally a Tory seat since 2019, but idk.p

I think this is someway true, but its more that there's no clear demarcation between 'effectively' and 'literally', and they're rolled into one

anvil, Friday, 2 July 2021 13:08 (five years ago)

This has LJ energy.

I really, really want Labour to win the next general election so we can continue our unavoidable decline at a 5 degree rather than 45 degree trajectory. This sounds like a joke but I sincerely mean it

— Abi Wilkinson (@AbiWilks) July 2, 2021

I don't care about decline. I want this wealthy nation to feed all of its people not another party who exclude Muslims so that white racists can fuck about voting for them should their dear house prices take a tumble or they happen to be 'fed up'.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 2 July 2021 13:17 (five years ago)

to be grown-up you've got get with the realpolitik and turn a blind eye to ethnic minorities getting slurred and thrown under a bus and accept eternal austerity, then we can get the Tories out!

calzino, Friday, 2 July 2021 13:50 (five years ago)

we're certainly on course for 5 degrees with Mandelson's Labour.

glumdalclitch, Friday, 2 July 2021 14:15 (five years ago)

it would have really gone down really well if one of his ten pledges in the leadership election had been "rehabilitate the career of Mando and bring him in as an de facto chief advisor". Fuck me, imagine it!

calzino, Friday, 2 July 2021 14:28 (five years ago)

Not sure that ‘Labour will consistently make things worse, just slower’ is intended as a ringing endorsement or the limits of anyone’s ambition.

Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Friday, 2 July 2021 14:51 (five years ago)

I still think that position is giving way too much credit to Starmer Labour.
