the 3 worst of the 4 third-placed teams all thru to the QF - only Portugal out, along with the rest of Group F, the only one with no survivors left in the tournament

I took my dog for a three mile walk while England game was on because I knew the chance of bumping into any arseholes was vastly reduced. I put the portable DAB onto 5 live after the game and heard Harry Maguire saying that being the England goalkeeper "is the most heavily scrutinised job in world football" and remembered that some of the worst wankers in the UK have Irish immigrant parents!

After England beats Germany expect no mercy from Merkel over the European travel ban. It’s Skegness in the rain for all of us this summer.

At the point where the England fans started booing the German national anthem, the authorities should have stopped the game and given a win to Germany.

These are bad tweets but perhaps there are some good ones out there.

idk seems unlikely

A lot of tweeters probably still taking time to compose themselves after witnessing that beastly Sweden player kicking the ball yesterday

hiroyoshi tins in (Sgt. Biscuits), Wednesday, 30 June 2021 11:36 (five years ago)

There is a lot of food on the shelves of my local supermarket.

In fact there is more than one supermarket.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 11:44 (five years ago)

German supermarkets amirite?

Not doubting that england deservedly edged the result yesterday, curious about what people thought of the performance, it felt like it was a fine margin win than 2-0 would be sometimes. Two tough tackling central midfielders on yellow cards was a tightrope, the Muller chance to make it 1-1, etc..i thought the performance, in the first half particularly, was very much like a english championship game, ball in the air a lot, defenders picking out long speculative balls....is this a genius strategy from southgate and co that I am under valuing? or was this a fortunate win against an average german side. Seeing england swop saka for grealish and the best response germany had was to send on emre can seemed telling in the balance of power between the two squads, england certainly have a fantastic array of super subs to choose from, but should they be more expansive with this talent?

Swanswans, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 13:17 (five years ago)

Southgate knows what he has and is making the best of it. The squad is a nice, united group who play for one another. The tabloid fuckery nicely shut out too.

Just a shame the results are so genuinely grim to look at.

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 13:35 (five years ago)

Also half a home tournament for Eng. Get through Rome and it's an SF and F at Wembley. Looks like it might turn out ok for our boys.

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 13:38 (five years ago)

It was another poor game to watch but I was more surprised Germany didn't switch up a gear and they just seemed spent so not even that flattering a scoreline. England score so many of their goals by just slotting it in from a few yards out but watching Sterling move into position for it from the other side of the pitch 40 yards away the way he did was something to admire. Pickford has barely been tested but that was a great reflex save from Havertz with the best struck chance of the game. I guess you could say England were lucky Germany were so shit...it does seem like England are just frustrating the life out of their opponents.

nashwan, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 13:38 (five years ago)

I thought Pickford was tested quite a bit yesterday

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 13:42 (five years ago)

ENG look solid and dull. Perhaps that's enough to win the tournament.

I felt that ENG-GER was intense (and maybe tense), but not very incendiary. The best shots apart from the goals were a couple of German strikes; Pickford made a super tip-over.

I don't like this team especially, but I'm glad to see Kane score at last.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 13:50 (five years ago)

I thought first half, the germans looked the slicker side and it was just a matter of time before they unpicked this packed defense with some canny skill or 1,2. I don't know where it went wrong for the germans but they finished looking akin to a small European team just threading water, a hasbeen team with an aging squad, a few young pups and a few talismanic waning players. england deserve credit for disrupting whatever the germans were doing (mainly nulifying kimmich and the wing).

Swanswans, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 13:59 (five years ago)

I am coming round to Southgate’s approach (up to a point) or perhaps simply bowing to the inevitable truth that he has his ways and he’s going to stick to them.

The benefit of having all that talent on the bench from this perspective is that if you try to lock the game down and keep things as boring as possible there is actually the capacity to really get after it in the final 20 minutes or to dramatically changes things earlier if you find yourself a goal down. Especially with the 5 subs rule.

There was probably a point a year or two ago where Southgate could have pursued a different course and worked out how to play a more expansive game but at this point it’s a case of dancing with the one that brung ya. It’d be lovely to see all that attacking talent playing together but no reason to believe it wouldn’t be an incoherent mess

Windsor Davies, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 13:59 (five years ago)

Agreed that Pickford has looked good. Even Kyle Walker on the right of the back three worked ok, his speed in recovery is something to behold and does help keep things quiet down that flank.

Still would like to see us drop trippier, push Walker back out to the right of a back 4 and get 2 of grealish, Saka, mount, foden alongside Kane and Sterling for the Ukraine game tho

Windsor Davies, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 14:01 (five years ago)

Shouldn’t be a surprise that Germany looked the better team in parts imo, even if they were poor overall.

Something is undoubtedly broken there so people shouldn’t get carried away praising England but a team with kimmich, Kroos, goretzka, muller, Neuer, Havertz etc is hardly a joke, talent-wise.

Windsor Davies, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 14:08 (five years ago)

great posts y'all, blimey, Windsor for england, I like the cut of your jip with the formation changes, I was really surprised mount didnt come back in after the way he played and would like to see him again, for sure, the gameplan worked and as you said, it's unlikely he'll change much tactically now. Ukraine are quite a surprisingly dynamic side and he'll just want to nullify that, as per this game, I suppose

Spain massive favourites as the Swiss are without Xhaka.

Even then it would've been a lot of pressure to follow-up on their victory against France.

Swiss were ok towards the end there. Minor chance they could get a goal and make it messy for Spain.
