starring a de-aged John Cusack. bold.

I really don't understand how Gandolfini's son is playing Tony. The kid is 19 this year, the series established Tony's birthdate as 1959/60, and the movie takes place in the turbulent Newark of the '60s.

CHANTIX!
yikes that looks embarrassingly self-parodic. Has Vera Farmiga fallen into the most bizarre niche of typecasting?
Gandolfini's son already laughably tried to play a teenager in The Deuce—I didn't know who he was at first so was deeply confused why they didn't just cast an actual teen actor. He was more convincing when they let him play a sleazy douchebag stock broker in the third season, but he's...not his dad
― rob, Tuesday, 29 June 2021 18:24 (four years ago)
Movie will probably be fine; the trailer rots. It looks like they gave young Tony some AJ qualities, which is probably the way to go.

awful trailer and lack of due care to a fictional world timeline aside... I'm still actually quite looking forward to watching this shite!

Tbf, Milch was not at his best when they were making that.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 29 June 2021 20:39 (four years ago)
Nic Pizzolatto revealed in December 2018 that he had helped Milch write the screenplay ... Milch, whose Alzheimer's diagnosis was made public in April 2019, took a hands-off approach to the production of the film; he relied on director Daniel Minahan and co-executive producer/writer Regina Corrado to see to the details.

yeah also i think apples vs oranges it may have been forgettable but it wasnt straight up bad which is the concern here

Predicting there will be little humor here. Besides Liotta’s Chantix antics
― calstars, Tuesday, 29 June 2021 22:21 (four years ago)
Feel like Gandolfini and Falco's performances have held up, and most of the rest of the show has not. But maybe I need to watch it again.
― Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 29 June 2021 23:03 (four years ago)
Definitely the latter. Not only has it not dated - it’s gained layers and layers of context and resonance.
Not worried about the movie - trailer is clearly designed to draw in demographics who’ve never watched the show. And hey, now some of them will.
― thewufs, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 01:42 (four years ago)
Do we know for sure that Gandolfini is involved in the Newark riots portion of the movie? I always thought the focus of this was supposed to be more on Dickie, so it could begin in the 60s, with Tony not showing up until it progresses to the 70s.
― Chris L, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 05:19 (four years ago)
I thought the look of much of the trailer said 70s rather than 60s, but what do I know
― Mule, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 06:47 (four years ago)
Has Vera Farmiga fallen into the most bizarre niche of typecasting?
I don't see her that often--she was really good in Netflix's Halston film. In this one, I'd be more worried about Ray Liotta (among lots else, if the trailer means anything).
― clemenza, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 11:23 (four years ago)
We need Liotta’s character to be the godfather of Melfi or something
― calstars, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 12:11 (four years ago)
XpNothing against Farmiga, it’s just that the last thing I saw her in was playing Norman Bates’s mother in the Psycho prequel
― rob, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 13:00 (four years ago)
They sure make her look like Carmella.

Other than this Sopranos movie and Young Sheldon - can you think of any other movies or TV shows where the offspring of one actor plays the same character first played by the parent?
I could not think of any others, but it has had to happen at some point I would figure.
― earlnash, Thursday, 9 September 2021 00:49 (four years ago)
Wait, the kid in Young Sheldon is Jim Parsons' son?
― nickn, Thursday, 9 September 2021 00:51 (four years ago)
Laurie Metcalf's daughter Zoe Perry plays Sheldon's mom.
― earlnash, Thursday, 9 September 2021 00:59 (four years ago)
Interesting bit up there ^^ that Chase talked to Ray Liotta about playing Ralphie, and he passed.

There's a 30 Rock episode where Tina Fey's daughter played a young Liz Lemon.
― Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 9 September 2021 01:12 (four years ago)
Also Kiki Kirin's daughter Yayako Uchida played the young version of Kiki's character Eiko in Tokyo Tower: Mom and Me, and Sometimes Dad.

― clemenza, Saturday, 2 October 2021 01:17 (four years ago)
It turns out this is a case where the trailer very accurately conveyed what the movie would be.
― Chris L, Saturday, 2 October 2021 05:52 (four years ago)
fwiw, all the hullaballoo sparked a sopranos rewatch from me, i think it's only my second time through! Knocked out most of the first season in two days. I dunno if you guys know this or not, but it's pretty good!
― When Young Sheldon began to rap (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 2 October 2021 06:08 (four years ago)
since 2010 I've watched it all three times I think, poor old Morbz only seemed to be taking it in a few episodes a year.
christ, this was even worse than the trailer made it look. The only positive thing I can say about is that because I stayed up late to watch it my dog was in the front of the house and scared off a possible burglar who must have been lurking about in the front garden while I was watching it in the kitchen.
― calzino, Saturday, 2 October 2021 10:09 (four years ago)
idk probably better enjoyed on a small screen. I had zero expectations and didn’t expect a crime-and-family story for the ages, just an extended episode set in the sopranoverse.vera farmiga somehow channeling BOTH livia and carmela was worth the price of admission for me (in fairness, zero dollars). see also talia balsam doing proto-Melfi.def feels like it should have been an 8-ep series instead of whatever it was but whaddyagonnado, eh?
― poster of sparks (rogermexico.), Saturday, 2 October 2021 17:39 (four years ago)
This was... weird and thin in plot. Agree the cast were great, esp loved the guy playing Syl leaning into those already-exaggerated mannerisms Van zant had in the show.
Even though I'd only watched all of the Sopranos fairly recently, i was struggling to follow who was who, and completely missed the significance/omg factor of what Uncle Jun did (no spoilers).
