Can I just say I hate the phrase “false #9”?
A #9 in how I’ve always known the game is a goalscorer, whether that means Shearer or Van Nistelrooy or any kind of fox-in-the-box, 30 goal a season type Defoe type character. “False #9” essentially just means plays havoc in the box without being a goalscorer… but doesn’t that go into either being 1) a trad #10 who isn’t a target man, ala Bergkamp or Zlatan or to lesser extent a Heskey, or a 2) a goal hanging #8 ala Lampard or Kaka? Their primary motive is still to get it to Drogba or Shevchenko, like a good #8 should, and the way “false #9” players are described.
I feel like false #9 type players are just a bit short to be seen as a 10 and shit at scoring which a #9 should be. But Morata has obvious proved himself over the years to be a very effective in the box #9 goalscorer, so it all just rings very hollow as a phrase or position. (I have not watched the game and am talking about an overall annoyance, not this example only. And all the names bar Defoe are world class players, it’s more noticeable in shitter teams)
