I kind of appreciate its absolute unsaveableness more from that POV, just a hammer blow to put the game beyond doubt

Also the way the TV hard camera didn't show if there was anybody there to run onto the loose ball, and then he just steamed in from stage left and obliterated it, lovely

A screamer.

Are Animated Dads Getting Hotter? (Tom D.), Monday, 21 June 2021 21:47 (five years ago)

there is no way on earth that damsgaard's goal was better imo

imago, Monday, 21 June 2021 22:00 (five years ago)

Absolutely nuts that first dutch goal wasnt a foul to mkd

Eschew things thirty two times before swallowing them (darraghmac), Monday, 21 June 2021 22:36 (five years ago)

Yeah, he took far too much of Pandev with his studs up for the impact on the ball to matter in the slightest. And then Russia got a penalty for...that

Refereeing went off a cliff today

Uefa has declined a request to illuminate the Euro 2020 stadium in Munich in rainbow colours for the Germany v Hungary match because it believes the gesture has a political context.

European football’s governing body said it received the request from the mayor of the German city, Dieter Reiter, on Monday.

Uefa said that the mayor’s reason for the request was a response to legislation passed in Hungary banning gay people from appearing in school educational materials or programmes for under-18s.

On that basis, Uefa said it could not grant the request and proposed alternative dates for the stadium to be lit up in rainbow colours.

“Racism, homophobia, sexism, and all forms of discrimination are a stain on our societies - and represent one of the biggest problems faced by the game today,” a statement from Uefa read.

“Discriminatory behaviour has marred both matches themselves and, outside the stadiums, the online discourse around the sport we love.

“However Uefa, through its statutes, is a politically and religiously neutral organisation. Given the political context of this specific request – a message aiming at a decision taken by the Hungarian national parliament – Uefa must decline this request.”

So basically what they're saying is that if Orbán hadn't introduced vile, discriminatory legislation the gesture would have been OK, but the fact that he did gives him protection against public displays criticising it? Wonder if they'd be saying the same if it was racially-based legislation?

Hungary should be banned from the Euros.

xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 22 June 2021 09:14 (five years ago)

6-0 defeat to Germany would be the most satisfying way to achieve that tbf

imago, Tuesday, 22 June 2021 11:12 (five years ago)

France also winning 6-0 that evening and thus eliminating Portugal would also be very satisfying

groovypanda, Tuesday, 22 June 2021 11:36 (five years ago)

Players can take a knee but a stadium can't make its lights into a heart.

nashwan, Tuesday, 22 June 2021 11:37 (five years ago)

If the Hungarian government is so bad (I believe it is), why is it being left to soccer to argue this case? What about the EU and the actual politicians of its member states?

A red herring really for these things to be the responsibility of sport, when expensive political organizations cherished by 'Proud Europeans' with blue and gold flags won't step up.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 22 June 2021 11:44 (five years ago)

They should go ahead and do it anyway, fuck UEFA. Failing that, I hope there's some protest during the game.

find it hard to believe gilmour was in closer contact to mount and chilwell than he was to any of his own teammates. scotland must have differing covid protocols which is a bit weird. uefa get involved in everything else so surprised that when it comes to player availability re covid they just leave it up to the individual teams.

And it was investigated by UEFA subsequently

That they found it to be "ok, we guess" is beside the point

aiui UEFA have different protocols which allow isolation of individuals rather than multiples. The Scottish government wouldn't go along with these which would have meant the team would have effectively been kicked out of the tournament in the event of a positive test as it would have forced the entire camp into isolation.

Because of this the Czechs and Croatia moved their training camps out of Scotland, and Scotland themselves moved theirs to Middlesbrough.

Jeez they've suffered enough

Full Kit Starmer (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 22 June 2021 12:51 (five years ago)

Think the Scottish game is probably the one to watch tonight. England & Czechs already through whereas both teams have to win in the other game or they're out.

groovypanda, Tuesday, 22 June 2021 13:11 (five years ago)

England are rarely worth watching. I will probably tune in to see if Kane can put in a performance bad enough to get Levy to gratefully accept 100m from City before the final whistle.

oscar bravo, Tuesday, 22 June 2021 13:17 (five years ago)

feel like pure shit just want 2019 England back

nashwan, Tuesday, 22 June 2021 13:29 (five years ago)

I'd prefer to watch the Scotland game as far more's riding on it but I'm with my family so I'll go along with whatever anybody else wants to watch

In one game both sides are trying to win, while in the other both sides are trying not to win. The latter could be interesting!

Are Animated Dads Getting Hotter? (Tom D.), Tuesday, 22 June 2021 16:03 (five years ago)

The Czechs will probably send out some ball boys and their coach driver.

Are Animated Dads Getting Hotter? (Tom D.), Tuesday, 22 June 2021 16:04 (five years ago)

England might want to win after all - if they do then Mount and Chilwell will be out of isolation but won't otherwise.

Well *I* know who he is (aldo), Tuesday, 22 June 2021 16:05 (five years ago)

if I ever went to a major soccer tourney as a fan, i'd probably keep in mind buying tix to Match 3 of the Group Stage is fraught with peril

cancel culture club (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 22 June 2021 16:05 (five years ago)

Runners up in England's group could well end up playing Spain in next round but guess that's preferable to Germany xps

groovypanda, Tuesday, 22 June 2021 16:28 (five years ago)

Spain isn't exactly playing as a juggernaut rn

cancel culture club (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 22 June 2021 16:34 (five years ago)

England could of course finish 3rd in the group, who do they play then?

Are Animated Dads Getting Hotter? (Tom D.), Tuesday, 22 June 2021 16:42 (five years ago)

with themselves

cancel culture club (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 22 June 2021 16:45 (five years ago)

It depends on which groups provide the best 3rd-placed sides, but the permutations are dwindling now, and it seems third-place in D would play winner of C or E. So the Dutch in Budapest, or Spain/Sweden/Poland/Slovakia in Glasgow.

No-one is worse than Mark Pougatch but this female presenter ITV are using in this tournament - sorry, I don't know her name - is hopeless. John Collins is King Hopeless though.

She's not exactly done her homework. Scott Brown looks like he's shitting himself - and I think that's mostly down to having to stand alongside Souness.
