Without any Labour Right stitch-up a bigger bloc of the membership still voted Starmer over RLB and Ian Murray and Rayner over Dawn Butler etc

Sure but they also voted for Corbyn in the first place - post-2019 panic was perhaps inevitable but equally Starmer's doing everything possible to show that a more centrist approach yields zilch and I'd imagine a lot of the younger voters in particular would be less inclined to fall for the same trick twice.

That being said yeah most of these ppl are currently no longer in the party.

Who’d even be a serious left candidate at the moment? Trickett has the shortest odds and is 20/1.

even there was a possibility of electing a genuine left-wing leader it would have to be someone incredibly thick-skinned and resilient and with no skeletons in the closet, not even minor youthful indiscretions like joking about spying for Putin. God knows, it would probably be cruel to subject this onto to some of the younger more likable SCG MP's. Maybe an old gammon-lite grey blur like Andy McDonald, who seems pretty decent and principled and mediocre and well liked. This isn't a serious suggestion btw, was just looking down a list and posting shite!

calzino, Saturday, 19 June 2021 16:10 (four years ago)

My recollection is that Corbyn's nomination in 2015 was seen by some of his nominators as a fig-leaf - "it'll look bad if we don't have someone from that wing" - and that he wouldn't have been re-nominated in 2016 if he didn't have an automatic bye as the incumbent.

Andrew Farrell, Saturday, 19 June 2021 17:30 (four years ago)

yeah they didn't count on the entryism and Corbynmania that followed. Margaret Beckett later admitted she wouldn't have nominated him if she knew he had a realistic chance of winning and she even cried tears of regret ;; These lads only like party democracy and party members when they vote how they are supposed to vote.

any attempt to organise through the Labour party is doomed to failure

Left, Saturday, 19 June 2021 20:21 (four years ago)

no he's just *bravely* joined the party in the quiet and humble fashion you'd expect from him, 14 months after Kieth took over and it become an unelectable centre-right waste of space!

I, like Angela Rayner, have been a victim of Jeremy Corbyn’s photobombing antics.

Judging by #CorbynPhotoBomb, he’s been going around the country making this kind of mischief for years. pic.twitter.com/OwanfCUley

Jez might want to take it to the tailors to have some collars stitched onto the neckline so it looks a bit more Chairman Mao rather than bass player from Kasabian

Bastadi has been in Batley all week, chatting to ordinary folk and he's writing a long piece about it. I'm not much of a fan but it could be interesting and is definitely should be a massive improvement on the John Harris safari format.

calzino, Sunday, 20 June 2021 10:17 (four years ago)

Seems like the push from certain quarters to try and detoxify Blair is in full swing, good luck with that lads.

https://www.independent.co.uk/independentpremium/voices/tony-blair-new-labour-reelected-b1850027.htm

Can't read the body of this piece as it's paywalled but is that really the argument you want to go with?

"Say what you like about Blair but at least the buses ran on time!" Fucking hell.

"Spaghetti" Thompson (Pheeel), Sunday, 20 June 2021 10:52 (four years ago)

it's a big testament to the grassroots strength this burgeoning Blair revival that the last Labour candidate he publicly endorsed lost their deposit!

calzino, Sunday, 20 June 2021 11:05 (four years ago)

They're apparently going to try and make the Batley loss all about antisemitism. Full destruction of English politics.

glumdalclitch, Sunday, 20 June 2021 11:07 (four years ago)

blame it all on the "anti-Semitic" South Asian community and vote-shame them and salt the earth while you are at it so they won't vote for Labour again for decades.

calzino, Sunday, 20 June 2021 11:11 (four years ago)

They are literally just as racist and hateful as the Tories, but their racism is leading to self-annihilation rather than a landslide victory.

calzino, Sunday, 20 June 2021 11:14 (four years ago)

On Wednesday, five Muslim organisations across Batley and Spen wrote to Starmer expressing their disaffection. The letter-writers said that while Muslims in the area had been “proud to support the Labour party, for a long time the Labour party has not been proud of our support”. By Sunday, according to Dr Wajid Khan, the organisers had not had a response.

the anti-Starmer protest vote is locked in whatever he does now, but sending out Islamophobic scapegoating messages to the press and then putting out the weak fib it's not the official Labour line and also not responding to the letter of pissed off Muslim organisations is such contemptuous behaviour and abysmal leadership. It's a hell of a thing to treat an ethnic minority like dogshit and then shame them because they've found "somewhere else to go". No matter what a grifter Galloway is he wouldn't have had a chance in Batley if someone more decent and principled than Kieth was the leader.

she's been campaigning on local council matters like bins, potholes and litter, perhaps she wouldn't have had an answer to yeah but this is a Labour run council!

calzino, Sunday, 20 June 2021 16:15 (four years ago)

Blackburn is extremely similar to Batley demographically - in fact it's 25% muslim, which is even higher than Batley's 20% - and this legend just got elected there: https://t.co/tzuM5ijUdH

Bad move by Rayner. Because when Kieth is gone she'll find it much harder to fool whatever left-wing members are left this time if she's fancying a shot at the leadership.

calzino, Sunday, 20 June 2021 22:05 (four years ago)

https://www.businessinsider.com/keir-starmer-labour-leadership-challenge-batley-spen-2021-6?

Some of his more optimistic critics in the party believe Starmer may not even contest such a challenge.

"You get the impression that Keir doesn't want the job anymore," a Labour MP critical of Starmer told Insider.

"It's possible the communications
team departures are a presage of that. Why carry on busting your balls when you know your boss has lost his mojo and is unlikely to be PM.

Premature to speculate like this but Keith's quietism really allows for this kind of thing.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 21 June 2021 10:17 (four years ago)

they know they've lost Batley + Spen and Kieth is a dud-man walking. They are preparing early for his resignation I reckon.

calzino, Monday, 21 June 2021 10:32 (four years ago)

Awful to see this from a Labour mayor. There was no consultation around this and projects and workers on the ground are outraged by this decision. Sex workers are not disposable and shouldn’t be treated like this. https://t.co/NOIIG1p0R5
