nation teams in sports generally represent nation states. the united kingdom of great britain and northern ireland is a nation state. the anomaly is wales, scotland and northern ireland having national football teams and it originates solely with the fact that scotland, england, wales, and ireland - then part of the UK and not yet partitioned - were the first national teams to exist and play games, pre-dating other international football by 20 years or so.

so, saying scotland is just a formality instead of the actual name of the nation state? i don't remember if they use the union jack or not in curling competitions

Even in Canada, it's usually the winning province representing Canada instead of a group of the very best curlers in the nation like we see for football or hockey, I wouldn't be surprised if it worked similarly for Scotland/Great Britain.

sorry, i think im confused. in other sports scottish athletes represent great britain. in football scotland represents scotland
