Brutal. I switched over to HBO afterward (in time to start watching Fernando Vargas and His Exploding Eye), but I don't know how much respect Calzaghe earned.

He had Lacy bleeding from the first round and never really put him down (one knockdown that was a maybe) - that kind of power (or lack thereof) doesn't make moving up a class sound too brilliant.

Two judges scored the bout 119-107 while the other scored it 119-105.

That was a rape

Jimmy Mod: The Prettiest Flower In The Pond (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Sunday, 5 March 2006 04:58 (twenty years ago)

The Cotto-Branco fight was pretty nasty, I think Branco ended up with a busted jaw and bad shoulder before he threw in the towel.

Fernando Vargas's eye was much worse than it looked in photos.

Looks like we were the only ones who watched it.

Damnit...I go to Vegas and miss the one boxing thread on ILX for the next calendar year. Bah.

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Sunday, 5 March 2006 23:37 (twenty years ago)

Maybe there will be another one along shortly.
Scott Harrison is fighting soon I think. I just hope it's not pay-per-view on sky.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Monday, 6 March 2006 00:06 (twenty years ago)

Harrison/Guzman is gonna be a barnburner. Of course, I won't be able to watch it in the states, almost guaranteed. Ugh.

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Monday, 6 March 2006 00:18 (twenty years ago)

I really hope this is an ITV fight.

Busy Williams replaces Harrison

Danny Williams will defend his Commonwealth heavyweight crown in Glasgow on 25 March following the withdrawal of Scott Harrison.

Harrison was due to defend his WBO featherweight crown against Joan Guzman but has picked up a gum infection.

Williams last fought on 25 February, when he took a split decision against British champion Matt Skelton.

Williams said: "I thought I'd be out for a while before a potential fight with (WBA champion) Nikolay Valuev."

Williams outpoints brutal Skelton

The 32-year-old added: "I was delighted when I got the call - I wanted to keep busy to stay off the chocolate bars and cakes.

"I don't care who is put in front of me, but I will knock them clean out because no-one is getting in the way of my second world-title shot."

Harrison is in no condition to take on Guzman, of the Dominican Republic, according to his father and trainer, Peter Harrison.

He said: "Scott's training has been a nightmare from the start.

"He developed a cold in the first week, but everything seemed OK following the birth of his daughter, Maria.

"But then Scott was hit by a gum infection and was forced to return from Fort William to visit his dentist.

"Things have got worse since then and Scott phoned me on Sunday morning to say his neck was swollen.

"When I visited him, I could see he had swollen glands and we got in touch with Frank Warren straight away to advise him of the situation."

For a weird weird moment there, I thought that meant Guzman was gonna move up from feather to heavyweight to fight Danny.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 17:11 (twenty years ago)

Haha thats what I thought too!

Next week Joe Calzaghe fights Brian Dowling.

Dom Passantino, Saturday, 7 April 2007 21:57 (nineteen years ago)

I missed it, only just finished work. A predictable result though.

xpost Dom OTM, I imagine

Matt, Saturday, 7 April 2007 21:57 (nineteen years ago)

Totally out of Calzaghe's league. Calzaghe won so easy. Too old at 35 eh? He kicked your ass.

Now it's all fights in America I reckon. He destroyed the 2 great american hopes EASY. Manfredo wasn't fit to lick his boots.
Let's hope Joe gets the credit and big fights he deserves now before he actually does get too old.

Manfredo wasn't fighting back and was out of his league. Joe would've knocked him out if it had continued.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Saturday, 7 April 2007 21:58 (nineteen years ago)

Calzaghe vs Jermaine Taylor next, then.

Dom Passantino, Saturday, 7 April 2007 22:00 (nineteen years ago)

Also Manfredo looks and talks like he's just walked out of a 30s gangster flick.

Dom Passantino, Saturday, 7 April 2007 22:01 (nineteen years ago)

"When are the Americans going to get it: Joe Calzaghe can actually fight"

Dom Passantino, Saturday, 7 April 2007 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

Manfredo = waaaaaaay too nice a guy

Porkpie, Saturday, 7 April 2007 22:05 (nineteen years ago)

Is Amir Khan due a step up in quality? I note another easy win this evening

I don't think Manfredo with 3 losses out of 26 fights and no punching power to speak of counted as a great American hope. It was a 3 round sparring match with Manfredo getting sacked for not even trying.

Calzaghe's demolition of Lacy got him much well deserved credit and was probably enough to make anyone else think twice about taking him on, that's why he ended up slapping a game show winner about tonight.

Khan's really starting to look powerful. I know they're supposed to be eased along and all that but surely it's time he stepped up a class. Mike Tyson was battering Berbick for fun at that age.

onimo, Saturday, 7 April 2007 22:25 (nineteen years ago)

Khan really needs to fight Jonathan Thaxton ASAP, at least get something around his waist. Although god knows what the money fight is supposed to be for him in the lightweight division. A moved down Cotto?

Dom Passantino, Saturday, 7 April 2007 22:33 (nineteen years ago)

ITV using "Party Hard" to soundtrack the fight's, ahem, "highlights".

Dom Passantino, Saturday, 7 April 2007 22:40 (nineteen years ago)

omg pavlik smackdown

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Sunday, 20 May 2007 03:05 (nineteen years ago)

Pavlik winning was kinda surprising.

Spinks/Taylor is going to suck and Taylor is going to win. You can pretty much change the channel already.

remy bean, Friday, 2 November 2007 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

Enzo fight on now. Calzaghe fight must be a late one.

pfunkboy, Saturday, 3 November 2007 23:59 (eighteen years ago)

ahh f--- this is on regular HBO isn't it. You used to be able to order HBO for one night and pay a prorated amount (like, fifty cents) and cancel it the next day.

wanko ergo sum, Sunday, 4 November 2007 00:05 (eighteen years ago)

I'm just thankful we get Setanta now. This should be a cracking fight.

pfunkboy, Sunday, 4 November 2007 00:07 (eighteen years ago)

We pay enough for Sky as it is so, regretfully, fuck Setanta.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 4 November 2007 00:09 (eighteen years ago)

We got setanta free this year from virginmedia to make up for them losing sky news/sky one etc.
Enzo just won his fight in 4 rounds.
Calzaghe fight starts 1.30am apparently. Listening to it on radio, Jim?
