Thats mean.

All the hippies at my school that dream of moving to Canada will be saddened by this information.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha, that's great Huck.
It's really strange, the things that people have been mentioning: trying not to offend, being really self-conscious, needing a huge amount of personal space, are things that I personally very strongly identify with, but when I walk around every day and look at other Minnesotans in the street I see none of this in anyone else. I seriously doubt that I look as outgoing to all of them as they do to me (at the one MinneapolisFAP I attended I was gently chided for putting my hood up all the time, I wonder if they knew it was cause I was really self-conscious), so what's going on?

CLASSIC

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 06:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Music = lots of classicness
Sven and Ole jokes = total dud.
Prarie Home Companion = total dud.
Lake Minnetonka/Edina/North Oaks/etc = dud.
endless surbubs = dud.
liquor store closed on sunday/no alcohol sold in grocery stores = dud.

I was thinking this when composing the thread.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 06:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Prince, Dylan, and The Replacements? So classic.

Sym (shmuel), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 06:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic for these reasons:
my people
Carleton College
Southdale, the birthplace of postmodernism.
City Pages
The Vietnamese and Mexican food
Walker Art Center
First Avenue
Skyways
All the lakes in Mpls. except for Nokomis
North of the river/south of the river divide, just like London, only diff is that if you are female and living in Shakopee etc. you still style your hair with THE CLAW.
If nuclear bombs rain down on Edina, leave the Convention Grill the fuck alone.
Hating Edina with especial force is just what you do when you are from St. Louis Park, especially if you are Jewish. The Coen Bros. are also from St.Louis Park, and they make digs on Edina in Fargo.
Lake Minnetonka is gorgeous though a bit West Egg. According to my grandmother, those great big mansions were merely the 'lake homes' of yer Pillsburys etc.
Excelsior is pretty classic, the friendliest town on the lake. My dad spent his childhood in Excelsior, where the amusement park was until 1976. My uncle used to be in charge of running the fireworks there.
Blount, my aunt and uncle live *on* Lake Minnetonka and have this beautiful chrome/wood early '60s speedboat which they ride to brunch in Wayzata, passing stoner party islands used by my cousin and the H*U*G*E mansion occupied by my aunt's grandparents back in the day. It took about five minutes to pass the house and grounds and a lot longer for my aunt to shut up about that house.
Summit Avenue in St Paul (where my dad spent the rest of his childhood)
Ragstock
Byerly's (where me and friends played Mink Coats v. Squirt Guns)
Minnesota State Fair and snack opportunities therein

Dud:
Snow
St. Olaf College
Lutherans (aka 'lobotomy for religious reasons')
Mosquitoes AND midges (gnats) in summer
Knowing how to use jumper cables and snow-shovels
Racism towards Viets, especially Hmongs, and Mexicans and Somalis
The NW suburbs: Blaine, Brooklyn Park, Robbinsdale
Morbidly obese Minnesotans at State Fair in their thousands

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 07:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to think that Prairie Home Companion was pretty carp, too, until I gave the music a good listen.

jim wentworth (wench), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Dud: Minnesota Vikings, lutefisk, Ole and Sven jokes, slowly dying old mining towns up in the Iron Range

Classic: Low, the Cows, Duluth, Ironworld, the International Wolf Center, the World's Largest Hockey Stick

http://www.wlra.us/wl/th/wlhstick1.jpg

daria g (daria g), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 07:51 (twenty-two years ago)

The Bruins could have used that stick last night. How much is the rental next April/May?

jim wentworth (wench), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 07:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Daria, do not diss the Vikings. Mike Tice is my sister's lovely friend and a classic.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 07:58 (twenty-two years ago)

If Paul Bunyan showed up in Boston with the world's largest hockey stick that would be, like, wicked awesome.

As for the Vikings, I just like making fun of my dad's team as they choke in the playoffs year after year.. oh jeez, ya know dey won't win da Sooper Bowl so why not root for de Packers der. It would be cool if they did pull it out, but I tend to be pessimistic.

daria g (daria g), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 08:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Poor Vikings. It's like they feel that winning a title would be too much like showing off.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 08:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I wasn't around when he played of course, but when I went through a phase of reading up on football history I always thought it was such a damn shame that Fran Tarkenton never won one.

daria g (daria g), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 09:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I was! My doctor's son was Jeff Wright and played with him as a linebacker, I think.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 09:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Paul Wellstone was a good guy and very principled

Except for when he pledged to only serve one term. But Wellstone is classic for that campaign bus.

Classic:
Hating all those cake-eaters in Edina
Hating the Bears
Hating the Packers
Lord Fletchers (hey, my aunt & uncle live on Minnetonka, too...and so did I 30 years ago)
Uptown
The Replacements
Prince
St. Paul
10,000 lakes
Boundary Waters
CP & the Strib (except for CJ)
that free zoo in that park that I can't remember the name of

Dud:
8 months of winter
mosquitos
SPAM
1am last call

don atwater weiner, Wednesday, 21 April 2004 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Hating all those cake-eaters in Edina means that when your team full of Jewish math geeks and Lutheran human beer kegs beats them at football, chocolate cupcakes are served free to all students and the big cheer at pep rallies is OFF WITH THEIR HEADS.

This is also the gateway into teaching the French Revolution in St. Louis Park. Believe.

Lake Minnetonka must have a ley-line that acts exclusively as a preppy magnet.

Minnesota is a great place to grow up, but people like me need bigger cities than Minneapolis.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I forgot to mention broomball and snowmobiles, which are at least as classic as high point beer.

The problem with Minneapolis is the same with most large modern cities--there's not much density to it. It's all sprawl. Which is also part of its charm.

don atwater weiner, Wednesday, 21 April 2004 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

The Twin Cities is a FANTASTIC place to grow up, even if you do get stuck out in the woods off a dirt road (which was still kind of classic because it was only 40 minutes outside of downton St. Paul).

Also, SPAM IS CLASSIC.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

CLASSIC:

-Lots of friends there
-Had some good gigs, at the Times and Cabooze and whatnot
-Lots of cool restaurants, and I love going to Maria's or Triple Rock for breakfast
-Halal markets that sell camel meat
-That Sun Ray sign on the way into St. Paul that's had the 'y' out for years, so it says "SUN RA"
-Happy Apple

DUD:

-Asshole drivers, for real
-I can't stand finding my way around Mpls, I've gotten lost there more than anywhere else and (partly as a result of being lost and stressed) gotten in my only car accident, which is still causing me financial trouble
-Driving from Wisconsin to Minnesota is most mind-numbing drive imaginable, and it's just long enough to feel really long but too short to settle into 'driving all day' mode.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I bought a pair of flip-flops at that mall in Edina.

hstencil, Wednesday, 21 April 2004 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

My friend got married in Edina. It was seemed okay. Flyte Tyme Studios is there, right?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Prince, Dylan, and The Replacements? So classic.

You forgot MATOS. KCLASSIC.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Edina used to have a shop where you could buy Bermuda bag covers and 'duck shoes' called McMuffees. The town itself is named after Edinburgh (Edina is the Latin name) and even has its very own Morningside. It is the land of the DAR soccer/hockey mom. I'll check on where Flyte Tyme is but let's just say...highly unlikely, more likely to be Eden Prairie.

Minneapolis road rage is among the most passive-aggressive in the world.

I miss Dayton's, the Lincoln Del, and Excelsior Amusement Park.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I should clarify that these are the only places I've been in Minnesota:

First Avenue/7th Street Entry
some restaurant a couple blocks away
some hotel (maybe it was by the airport?)
the mall in Edina
a gas station somewhere between Minneapolis and Moorhead
a Target somewhere between Minneapolis and Moorhead
a dumpy bar in Moorhead
some restaurant that kinda sucked in Moorhead
a Days Inn in Moorhead (we snuck into the pool later that night)
a Chinese buffet place in Moorhead
yet another gas station

hstencil, Wednesday, 21 April 2004 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to see more of the state.

hstencil, Wednesday, 21 April 2004 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Flyte Tyme's website says its in Edina.

Also, Husker Du.

Well you pretty much covered everything between Minneapolis and Moorhead (as well as Moorhead) so you can check that off the list.

pholm, Wednesday, 21 April 2004 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

But if you ever have to make the drive again tune into St. Cloud State's radio station KVSC (88.1 FM and kvsc.org streams it online). Probably the best college station in the state and on a good day you can get it almost as far west as Alexandria on I-94.

Hey Don that zoo you're thinking of is the Como Zoo; I live a couple miles away from it and it is great. Also, in a lot of places (maybe it's just in Minneapolis? I don't know) the bars are now open until 2am. As if I ever go out.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

One bad thing about Como is that it's a zoo in the old-school sense of the word. It has really tiny enclosures compared to most zoos proper these days.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i like suzy, but that's about it.

minneapolis was my traumatic home for about a month while i decided i did NOT want to be a flight attendant. it was hell. really and truly.

on a roadtrip a couple years later i decided to give it a second chance. it didn't help.

i don't know about the rest of the state, but i hate minneapolis.

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

God, I was in town shortly after they (finally) switched to a reasonable bar time. Shit was insane, like people were drunk with their newfound freedom to be, er, drunk. I saw at least huge barfight and one dumpster set on fire (REALLY on fire), and then we were sitting outside at this place called Asia and missed being the victims of a random drive-by egging by mere inches.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Does the Como Zoo still have that tiny little amusement park with the Tilt-a-Whirl and I don't remember what other rides (were/are there other rides?) Haven't been there since grade school.

pholm, Wednesday, 21 April 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll have to go to asia more often...

g--ff (gcannon), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

tho i think it might be 'azia'

g--ff (gcannon), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Minnesotans sure are tricky. They're aloof, reserved, sometimes stand-offish. They'd come across as assholes in this respect were it not for the fact that they're constantly giving up their left arms for those in need and washing the feet of tired strangers.

When I was twenty and living alone in an apartment off of Franklin, a woman from the liquor store invited me to her family's house for Thanksgiving. I think that I may have been the only person there under 200 pounds, and the only man under 6'3". They fed me like a brother, got me drunk on Schnapp's, and it was TEH BEST THANKSGIVNG EVAH.

It was just one family in NE Minneapolis, but I'll stick up for Minnesotans any day of the week. Even the screedy James Lileks.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a lot of family in Minnesota, and I remember going to family reunions when I was a kid and stopping on the way to get really fantastic pie from a place called the Norski Nook or something. But that could just as well have been in Wisconsin, I suppose. I mean, it might have been. But if it is in Minnesota, that is something I like about Minnesota a lot.
The only times I've been to Minneapolis, I've just seen tons of hippies and had bad food and a really bad time. I'm sure it's an okay city, but my experiences were very, very dud.

He posted this on Facebook shortly after Renee Goid’s murder and it’s gone viral enough to make it to Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/TwinCities/s/vd9WqpQ0tv

I’ve had a lot of my friends outside of Minnesota reach out about how things are going, and how things are “on the ground” and what my thoughts are on Minneapolis right now.

First off, I’m here. In the middle (somewhat) of all of this awfulness. As a dad, a city councilperson, a small business owner and mostly, hopefully, aspirationally as an decent human being, I want to mention a few things - while this awful shit is largely centered in Minneapolis, it’s full on in Saint Paul and also in the inner suburbs. I get that the twin cities are often “that stuff around Minneapolis” if you aren’t here.

Speaking for my inner city suburb, 24k people that are nearly 50% BIPOC, we’ve been somewhat less directly terrorized (an odd qualifier that shouldnt be necessary) than some other communities so far. Before that seems like good news, I need people to understand that my Latinx/Somali/Eritrean/Ethiopian/Hmong neighbors are largely not leaving their homes, because they know that untrained federal agents will assault and detain them, and their children - Regardless of immigration status.

I’m not sure anyone in the twin cities has the capacity to know how this is playing out in the larger world because we are fucking exhausted. When we see the videos of atrocities committed by ICE we know that intersection, we’ve eaten at that restaurant, and we’ve gotten gas at the speedway where they broke that window and dragged that unconscious person into a car. We can’t get past the endless stream of info from the people we know that are in there doing direct action, or just watching the streets with whistles ready to alert during ice action. We are a major metropolitan area under siege from the federal government. Please, no matter your political positioning, read that again, and let those words sink in.

To the ICE agents - you are invaders. Monsters. Secret police. Unwelcome by all of us. If some of you are starting to see the horrors of your actions, quit. If we share some core of common decency (and i hope we do, we are both people) - quit. If you don’t? Get the fuck out of this special place i love and go home. You are unwanted. You have no value. You are not a warrior, you are an invader. You are not a stabilizing force, you are a terrorist. You are not a cop, you are a criminal. You are a destabilizing force, sent into communities to ruin them. Good luck looking in the mirror when this is all over.

Again, this could all stop. Now.

Like, right now.

It’s easy to stop brutalizing a community. It’s much harder to keep brutalizing a community when they won’t take your shit, won’t take your bait, and won’t meet your violence with the violence you want so badly to justify your escalation of violence.

In the true tradition of Minnesota, we will suffer quietly, and we will speak loudly. Helping our neighbors might start with pushing their car out of a snowbank or jumping their battery, but for most of us that’s the same as standing in protest at the Whipple building, offering safe refuge for our neighbors in our businesses, delivering food to people that are too scared to leave their homes, and monitoring bus stops to keep children and parents safe from seperation.

We will not back down. We will not bend. We will not betray our neighbors, and we will protect them, because we are unified. Y’all picked the wrong state to fuck with. ICE out of Minnesota. Get fucked, traitors.

It has gotten, thankfully, pretty quiet in our neck of the woods. This is my first week since the start of Jan that I haven't been giving multiple rides a day. Still doing to elementary patrol/crossing guard in the mornings but it sounds like after spring break I can hang up my hi-vis vest as well. My wife hasn't had any grocery deliveries to do since last Friday.

Last night, partially due to daylight savings & probably due to the weather as well, there were kids playing out in the street. I haven't seen any of the kids in our neighborhood unless they were running to/from the bus stop since Xmas.

Still lots of fallout to deal with, rent/evictions are still an issue, we had a neighborhood fund raiser at the bar down the street Saturday which raised 10k. But, I'm no longer worried that federal agents are going to kick in my door or my neighbor's. Well, I'm not as worried.

I put an event together for 12-ish people at La Doña Cervecería (Mexican taproom with good food). It's casual and brightly lit, so it's not right for mood and ambience, but it worked well. Also is just a mile or so from downtown, so there could be better options in the North Loop or nearby.

Come On, (Eazy), Tuesday, 24 March 2026 02:00 (two months ago)

I officially retired from patrolling as of this morning, worked my last cross-guard/patrol shift at my daughter's elementary school. I did three or four shifts a week since the day after Renee Good was murdered. The crossing guard stuff was pretty easy, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't glad to be getting an hour of mornings back.

I can't say I miss the rapid response stuff, because a lot of times it was both stressful and kind of boring, but the few times when did escalate on my watch and was involved in a full-on Bullitt-style car chase...well let's just say I understand why some people got addicted to doing it.

Been in the Cities for a bit taking care of my brother's things and just did what I've wanted to do for a break since I got here: take a long walk through Wood Lake Nature Center in Richfield, of all places. Related to the convo in the 50s thread, it's just amazing that the place feels just as it did when I was, like, five years old. (My parents loved nature centers and preserves, and once, I can't remember why but I'm sure he'd messed up, my brother had to clean the goose-shit-heavy boardwalk across the middle of the lake.) I just love how well kept-up the place is, and how once you're in it, other than 35W sounds, you can't feel or see the big-box stores and fast food that's popped up around it. It just feels like the values here were in the right place, to keep the area around the lake instead of just building more houses. And it gives a real sense of what the whole immediate area was like before it was settled.

Wood Lake is a real gem. Richfield is really thriving these days.

A big revelation on this trip came after selling some gear at Music Go Round in Roseville, on Lexington near Larpenteur, and this strip mall had so much interesting stuff: a tailor, a cat cafe, a kind of labubu dealer, and then Maverick’s Real Roast Beef, looking like a former diner converted into a counter-service sandwich shop, and lunch there was incredible.

Selling to MGR worked out in the end, glad they were interested in some of the novelty items.

My only association with Roseville (beyond a few friends/relatives living there over the years) is having gone often to the two movie theaters: the Roseville 4 $1 theater (saw Bill and Ted, Miami Blues, etc.) and the Rosedale Cinema (saw Blue Velvet, A Chorus Line, etc.).

Did you see that Pope Leo mentioned seeing The Blues Brothers at the Roseville 4?
