I guess the news people were using a direct line into the PA, which makes his entrance and letting the song completely play out as he mugs for the audience come off really weird because there's no audible cheering whatsoever for minutes on end.

I had "Karma Chameleon" cued up to play after, but that was immediately a no-go...It really shook me up. We talked about it, and then I phoned the principal as soon as I had a break. She was really good about it. Last time I ever play a music video without double-checking first.

The concept of the video was Boy George as an outsider, getting kicked out of different places in various historical settings. It was directed by Julien Temple, who came up with the idea of jurors dressed in blackface. This was a shocking image for American audiences, who long associated blackface with racism, but in England it was far more accepted as part of their music hall tradition.

Temple explained in the book I Want My MTV: "'Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?" was about being gay and being victimized for your sexuality, which George was kind of emblematic of. It seemed appropriate to me that in the video he would be judged by jurors in blackface, to send up bigotry and point out the hypocrisy of the many gay judges and politicians in the UK who'd enacted anti-gay legislation."

I think there was...? I remember reading at the time that MTV refused to play it (not that MTV's programming wasn't already explicitly racist in the early '80s).

I had to check when The Black and White Minstrel show ended on the BBC - 1978, so three years before the Culture Club video, too far a distance timewise for the CC vid to be taken or excused as parody.

Running weekly for 20 years makes enough of a cultural impact that it can still be referred to as an element of public consciousness three years later... even if the stage show wasn’t still touring regularly until 1987, and playing Butlins until 1989.
