encouraging to see all the replies there bemoaning patel's soft-touch approach to channel crossings, what a great country

didn't think there could be a more nasty and vindictive HS as Theresa May was, but at least she wasn't a HOME SECRETARY full-kit wanker as well.

I read some posts yesterday suggesting that there will be a leadership challenge when they lose Batley + Spen. Also that Leadbetter is the frontrunner for candidacy there. I don't think Kieth is really going to be up for a dilettante "who likes to do politics differently" and will be hoping the CLP will do him a favour by voting for some other off the shortlist who isn't a complete certainty to gift the seat to the Tories. But I think they'll lose it whoever runs tbh.

calzino, Thursday, 20 May 2021 14:15 (five years ago)

maybe some of that "look at your hands" type stuff makes good comedy, but it's no good for pivotal by-elections that could be the last straw that breaks your leadership.

calzino, Thursday, 20 May 2021 14:26 (five years ago)

the fash guy, Halloran is going to announce this weekend if he's running or not, if he doesn't the Tories have it comfortably in the bag.

calzino, Thursday, 20 May 2021 14:56 (five years ago)

On a different note, how the fuck can it cost £20 billion to restore the House of Commons?! You could knock a replica up for about 1% of that, in fact I know a bloke who'd help out for the right price.

MLM disaster unfolding in East London Tech City (Matt #2), Thursday, 20 May 2021 15:21 (five years ago)

doing refurbs to old listed building are always nightmarishly expensive and time consuming, you special permission to even drill a hole buildings like that and it will be chocka with asbestos. It would be cheaper to knock up a new one.

calzino, Thursday, 20 May 2021 15:24 (five years ago)

It's a real death-trap by all accounts, the main article here is good for lots of details (including the four of five people that are constantly patrolling for fires), but the photos will probably tell you a lot of what you need to know, calzino

so what's the catch with the Tories' populist and very showy rail nationalisation noises

not trying to be all 'tories are good' lol, just want to know where they've hidden the inevitable devil

xp

you open the not so grand looking wooden panelling and there is an antique fuse-box and a wonky looking rcbo isolator flush on with an 8 gang switch... lads this is the mother of all parliaments!

calzino, Thursday, 20 May 2021 17:56 (five years ago)

xp

for a start Great British Railways is only operating in England.

calzino, Thursday, 20 May 2021 18:00 (five years ago)

Corbyn would have really nationalised the railways, this just sounds like franchising remixed and repackaged with some government intervention.

calzino, Thursday, 20 May 2021 18:04 (five years ago)

“The end of the franchise model but there will be a role for private sector companies too”

lol

calzino, Thursday, 20 May 2021 18:06 (five years ago)

it sounds like a public-facing entity to take the heat for any fuckups while the private middlemen get pushed further into the shadows but remain firmly there, ensconced in their sweetheart no-bid deals like parasites on a hog’s ass

It will take many years to undo the damage done by Corbyn

vs

This IS what a functioning opposition looks like, it is the voters that are wrong

vs

silence

anvil, Saturday, 22 May 2021 12:50 (five years ago)

the only time he's looked authoritative and in a position of strength was when he took Shippers to the cleaners for gossiping about his bit on the side. That was his defining moment!

calzino, Saturday, 22 May 2021 12:59 (five years ago)

if Corbyn had stepped down after the chicken coup or Smith had a successful leadership challenge, Labour would arguably be in a much more advanced state of decay right now.

calzino, Saturday, 22 May 2021 13:06 (five years ago)

So something I noticed RE Starmer and Corbyns social media output

Corbyns visits mostly told through third party engagements

Starmers visits never seem to break out of staged photo ops into real stories.

Yes yes, those are definitely the important parts for the leader of a political party, there’s not an army of aides and interns to take minutes.

Got a bit of a technical query! Does anyone know a resource to find out how much government grants to particular councils have changed? Particularly post Labour.

Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 22 May 2021 20:30 (five years ago)

that is an interesting question. I seem to recall under May that bankrupt Tory-run Northamptonshire council received a very "cheeky" bailout and that seemed like an outrageous pork barrel handout at the time. Now every time I pass through Batley I'm looking up to see if money is getting dropped from helicopters.

calzino, Saturday, 22 May 2021 21:06 (five years ago)

i think lbhf had a note on their website or in the recent council tax leaflet about the change in theirs.

"54% real terms cut in 10 years"

koogs, Saturday, 22 May 2021 22:46 (five years ago)

The sage report snuck out tonight seems all kinds of bad news, especially if you haven’t had the second (or any) jab

After reports from @guardian that no.10 blocked @PHE_uk release of B.1.617.2 schools data, @PHE_uk has now released their technical report on variants at 11pm on a Saturday - this still doesn't seem to have data on schools (!), but what it does have looks seriously worrying. 🧵

calzino, Sunday, 23 May 2021 09:53 (five years ago)

does he just want be hated by absolutely everyone? Even some of the worst right-wing Labour know which side to take in constituency matters, if not out of common decency out of career self-preservation. I think he needs help tbh.
