went down for the last hour. police presence was ridiculously disproportionate

Qamon (||||||||), Thursday, 13 May 2021 21:51 (five years ago)

I was out with a friend today for a walk/drive and as we arrived in Govanhill we counted ELEVEN police cars/wagons, one after the other, sirens blazing as they made their way to Kenmure - and this was at 4pm!

boxedjoy, Thursday, 13 May 2021 22:04 (five years ago)

scenes today are really make me despair

see as someone who likes a drink and a carry on... how is any of this even fun for those taking part? What joy is there to be had in smashing up a local space, getting into fights and risking a fine or jail?

boxedjoy, Sunday, 16 May 2021 10:34 (five years ago)

I really don't know but I doubt it's even about fun, I think fighting is just so deeply ingrained in them.

Scotland is full of crazy people, is how I explain it to non-Scots.

Are Animated Dads Getting Hotter? (Tom D.), Sunday, 16 May 2021 12:34 (five years ago)

I don't know if we litter worse than other countries but it does annoy me to no end that people go out to pretty places in the countryside and litter there so much. I think the idea of having a good time and carrying your rubbish just doesn't work for them so they'd rather spoil the pretty places and assume someone else will clean it up. What's even worse is when people throw their litter out of their cars... just why?

So many rats running about.

Eyeball Kicks, Monday, 6 September 2021 15:05 (four years ago)

ugh. Thankfully I haven't seen any but have heard stories.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Monday, 6 September 2021 15:25 (four years ago)

about a month before lockdown I took a few sick days. I had to phone the council because I looked out my window at 4pm ie still daylight and saw rats charging through the communal bin area in the garden that backs on to our garden. It's disgusting. Even in the two years or so I've been living in Govanhill the fly-tipping seems to have gone from sofas and wooden furniture to piles of dumped bags of rubbish.

boxedjoy, Monday, 6 September 2021 15:45 (four years ago)

I was in Maxwell Park yesterday around 4pm doing some scavenger hunt game for someone's birthday, and one of the tasks was to take a photo of a wild animal that wasn't a dog or a bird. I thought, that's easy, I'll just go find a rat. And so I did.

Eyeball Kicks, Monday, 6 September 2021 15:52 (four years ago)

Jeezo.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Monday, 6 September 2021 15:56 (four years ago)

Someone else got a devil's coach horse, which I thought was quite impressive.

Eyeball Kicks, Monday, 6 September 2021 16:01 (four years ago)

Why do people bag their dog's shit and then just leave it wherever? They've just doubled the mess. Do they think there's some guy who finds all the bags and collects them?

What's Govanhill like to live in these days?

paolo, Saturday, 30 October 2021 13:20 (four years ago)

I'm happy enough!

I always think moving into a flat anywhere is a gamble. You're at the behest of the other half-dozen households in your building. Our current one is fine as all our neighbours get on and a few own their homes. When I lived in Paisley I lived in a street that was known as quite rough and I never had any problems there for the same reasons. But when I lived in Shawlands we got broken into and none of our neighbours batted an eyelid because they didn't care because for anyyone else, it was just temporary, rented stopgap living.

boxedjoy, Saturday, 30 October 2021 13:31 (four years ago)

This made me miss Glasgow again

Conversation there on the busy tube. Eastern European couldn’t see the map. Asked an American to tell her when we got to “Patrick.” Yankee obediently started looking for Patrick.
Local said: “It’s Partick, easy mistake to make.”
A random steamer: “Aye, if yer a fuckin iPhone.”

Alba, Saturday, 30 October 2021 14:14 (four years ago)

Glasgow (well Finnieston) is buzzing with COP 26 delegates from around the world who are fairly easy to spot as they are almost all wearing masks on the street (I wonder if they have been instructed to or they are just being cautious as there is so much Covid here?). They are also easy to spot as mnay are carrying COP 26 Hygiene Kits and multiple boxes of lateral flow tests. They all have to show a negative test before they are allowed into the COP 26 'blue zone'. Finniestion Street earlier was awash with delegates sitting on the pavement looking perplexed as they tried to comprehend the lateral flow test instruction sheets. One would have thought they might have been given some assistance. if this continues I think I may head down every day and set up a pop up lateral flow test instructions explanation workshop.

stirmonster, Saturday, 30 October 2021 16:52 (four years ago)

I see i can't spell Finnieston after decades living in it or next to it. tut tut!

https://www.zerowastescotland.org.uk/content/national-litter-and-flytipping-strategy-scotland

the Scottish Government have launched an open consultation into what can be done around litter and flytipping. Some of their proposals are terrible - a campaign to tell people litter is bad, as if we don't already know that and years of asking people nicely to not do it has worked. It takes about five mins to participate and you don't even need to answer all the questions, but I think it's worth giving them the feedback that eg arranging an uplift needs to be easier, and the Dumb Dumpers concept makes everyone feel like a grass.

boxedjoy, Tuesday, 14 December 2021 12:47 (four years ago)

It was great when they used to just have bulk uplift on a set day every week. So, so easy.

Madchen, Tuesday, 14 December 2021 16:10 (four years ago)

Does anybody have recommendations for driving instructors in the Glasgow area, preferably south side? I have to finally bite the bullet and learn to drive in the new year. On a very quick web search - driving lessons are expensive!!

Ward Fowler, Tuesday, 21 December 2021 10:10 (four years ago)

I can’t recommend a driving instructor, but I can wholeheartedly recommend Celentano’s, by the Cathedral. The feasting menu is astoundingly good value at £38, and includes one of the best plates of food I’ve ever eaten (beef rump, for the record). Great waiting staff too. A++ would totally go again.

Madchen, Thursday, 30 December 2021 20:28 (four years ago)

Oh, I heard about that. Must try it soon.

Eyeball Kicks, Thursday, 30 December 2021 23:38 (four years ago)

I can also very much recommend Chateau-X which is the latest venture by Six by Nico.

Anyone going to see Delgados at Kelvingrove bandstand in August?

Me!

I don't have a ticket but was thinking of it as I really enjoyed the Barrowlands gig.

brain (krakow), Saturday, 6 May 2023 17:45 (three years ago)

Krakow, I might have a spare ticket - will know nearer the time, but it's quite likely

ailsa, Saturday, 6 May 2023 21:48 (three years ago)

Thanks ailsa. Drop me a line if you do end up with a spare, in case we've not bought any in the meantime (my partner would probably come along too).

two weeks pass...

Crossposted from the thread about Gerry/Onimo from Aldo..try g___y more

Before the funeral, Ailsa and I are meeting for a beer in the scene of one of the most legendary Glasgow FAPs, the Alpen Lodge on Hope Street. So we don't go to an early morning service hanging and because it's a weeknight and we are all old it will just be a quiet few drinks and not a mad one like FAPs passing. Be in there about half 7/8 o'clock.

The Alpen Lodge, NOT ONIMONO

ailsa, Sunday, 28 May 2023 01:13 (three years ago)

If anyone wants details of the funeral, shout at me

ailsa, Sunday, 28 May 2023 01:14 (three years ago)

Oh yeah, this FAP will be on Tuesday night.

ailsa, Sunday, 28 May 2023 01:45 (three years ago)

I can’t come up to Scotland this week any more and am really sorry to miss the funeral. I will raise a glass in Gerry’s honour, and put virtual arms around the shoulders of those of you who are going to be there x

Madchen, Sunday, 28 May 2023 07:26 (three years ago)

Hope to make it along to the Lodge to raise a glass in memory etc

Ward Fowler, Sunday, 28 May 2023 07:34 (three years ago)

I can't make tomorrow night, unfortunately, as we'll be over in Edinburgh. Sorry not to be able to join you.

brain (krakow), Monday, 29 May 2023 21:56 (three years ago)

hi folks I've just this minute finished working and am absolutely knackered, so won't make it along tonight now. Apologies, and hope you have a good time. Best wishes for tomorrow.

Ward Fowler, Tuesday, 30 May 2023 17:47 (three years ago)

It was great to see yez - If I'd had the foresight to book a hotel, I also wouldn't have run smack into kicking out time at Bruce Springsteen at Murrayfield.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 30 May 2023 21:38 (three years ago)

Good to see folk. An excellently bizarre evening with the Alpen Lodge jukebox once more delivering the mood-appropriate goods.

ailsa, Tuesday, 30 May 2023 23:25 (three years ago)

Karkow hope you can make it - there are still tickets if helpful (slightly surprised).

I'm going to Glasgow this weekend for a gig, never been before. Is it feasible to stay way out of the centre (cheaper hotel) or would that be a bad idea?
