PPS: My naked bid for feedback of PMing selected parties that participated has worked out pretty well for me. I recommend it if it doesn't make you too squeamish.

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 11 May 2021 00:47 (five years ago)

Greg, I see that you have written a few Alpaca Farms quizzes. I created an account there, but haven't participated in anything.

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 12 May 2021 14:21 (five years ago)

The fact that "Phoenix Coyotes" wasn't counted for "Arizona Coyotes" in the Indigenous Languages 1DS was balanced out for me by the fact that "Waylan and Madam" was accepted for "Wayland Flowers and Madame" in the LGBT ML.

jaymc, Wednesday, 12 May 2021 14:25 (five years ago)

i missed a question in 21st century literature about the hilary mantel wolf hall series because i answered "cromwell" instead of "thomas cromwell." fine, the question specified that you needed the first and last name for that answer, and i admittedly missed that. but ... why were both the first and last name required in the first place? i know that there's oliver cromwell too, but the question wasn't based around differentiating the two. seemed picky.

na (NA), Wednesday, 12 May 2021 14:40 (five years ago)

I think it was because people might have just guessed "Cromwell" based on the general time period, without actually knowing whether it was Thomas or Oliver.

jaymc, Wednesday, 12 May 2021 14:51 (five years ago)

Even so, shouldn’t that be specified in the question, or would that be a giveaway?

I chickened out on Indigenous Languages, good for you doing it, will take a look soon.

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 12 May 2021 15:05 (five years ago)

Lol, i guessed "Hilary Mantel", so that gives you a sense of how closely I am reading the questions.

I won my LGBT Rundle though!

Draymond is "Mr Dumpy" (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 12 May 2021 16:14 (five years ago)

TFW you realize you should've played a 1DS.

Tahini Coates (Leee), Thursday, 13 May 2021 16:10 (five years ago)

Happens less and less frequently, unfortunately. Which 1DS?

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 13 May 2021 16:39 (five years ago)

Musical tributes. Basically I got scared off because of the Lemmy question -- I couldn't remember if his last name was Kilmister or Kilminster, and I just gave up, but apparently first name was acceptable. (Also, that was the day that I had to drive 30 miles to get my second dose, so there's that.)

Tahini Coates (Leee), Thursday, 13 May 2021 17:31 (five years ago)

Oh yeah.

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 13 May 2021 19:31 (five years ago)

On a kid's zoom piano recital right now and one of the perfomers is playing a Sherman Brothers composition, which of course, I had never known they had written.

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 15 May 2021 21:49 (five years ago)

I had never even heard of The Sherman Brothers until I started researching for the quiz. Not much of a Disney guy.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Saturday, 15 May 2021 22:01 (five years ago)

I think there was a book or a documentary about them recently where I saw their name, but otherwise never knew who they were until pretty recently.

Lost to a 9(6) (welcome to B), but I'm proud that I scratched out three of the answers and even got 7 points for my trouble.

Tahini Coates (Leee), Tuesday, 18 May 2021 14:58 (five years ago)

Also, don't go onto the message boards right now, someone apparently spoiled one of today's questions.

Tahini Coates (Leee), Tuesday, 18 May 2021 15:30 (five years ago)

I try not to go to the message boards unless it's for one of our recaps.

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 18 May 2021 15:47 (five years ago)

Fair strategy, but I don't think I can resist in going into excruciating details about how I came upon the answers I entered! Anyway, the spoiling thread's been deleted.

Tahini Coates (Leee), Tuesday, 18 May 2021 17:09 (five years ago)

I was so close to winning yesterday -- my first thought for Driving Miss Daisy was Atlanta and then switched to Savannah; when I was actually entering my answers, I'd nearly forgotten that I decided on Savannah. If only my short-term memory were worse!

Elementary, My Dear Hoatzin (Leee), Friday, 21 May 2021 20:12 (five years ago)

that was against me, right? i had no idea beyond it being somewhere southeast. i guessed charleston but i probably should have thought about it more.

na (NA), Friday, 21 May 2021 20:21 (five years ago)

Is anyone paying for commissioner’s circle presently and want to finally set up an ilxor private rundle next season?

Clara Lemlich stan account (silby), Friday, 21 May 2021 20:24 (five years ago)

xp Yeah, that was our match. I do want to thank you for the 2 points for the Chinese question, though!

Draymond is "Mr Dumpy" (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 22 May 2021 16:56 (five years ago)

the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Friday, 28 May 2021 13:11 (five years ago)

Some kind of Eastern European thing, eating pancakes for Shrovetide.

AP Chemirocha (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 28 May 2021 14:21 (five years ago)

Eastern European? Pancake Day is pretty common in the U.K., or at least was when I studied there in the late '90s.

jaymc, Friday, 28 May 2021 14:58 (five years ago)

As the final day before the austerity of the Lenten fast, Shrove Tuesday also has many customs pertaining to food. Pancakes are traditional in a number of European countries because eggs, sugar, and fat, commonly forbidden during the Lenten fast, are used up so they will not go to waste; the day is known as Pancake Day or Pancake Tuesday in Ireland and in many Commonwealth countries.

jaymc, Friday, 28 May 2021 15:01 (five years ago)

ah, this jew did not know about strange pancake traditions

the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Friday, 28 May 2021 15:43 (five years ago)

same. seemed like "indulgence" was a slam dunk to me.

Draymond is "Mr Dumpy" (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 29 May 2021 18:10 (five years ago)

yeah i answered indulgence knowing that it was likely wrong

the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Saturday, 29 May 2021 18:12 (five years ago)

Had no idea here, thought maybe there was some kind of Catholic doctrine of absolution called "syrupy"

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 29 May 2021 18:49 (five years ago)

Haven't checked yet, but I hope you all got RHINOCEROS, which has a tie-in with a recent ILX0r 1DS.

AP Chemirocha (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 3 June 2021 19:54 (five years ago)

I'll bite: what's the tie-in? (I got it wrong.)

Sweet F♯ A♯ ∞ (Leee), Thursday, 3 June 2021 20:43 (five years ago)

Zero Mostel was in the film of Rhinoceros- with Gene Wilder!

AP Chemirocha (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 3 June 2021 20:51 (five years ago)

lol I had a feeling that I'd be walking into that one.

Sweet F♯ A♯ ∞ (Leee), Thursday, 3 June 2021 20:52 (five years ago)

horn first.
9(5) yesterday, went with mimosa instead of bellini.
back down to earth today.

Draymond is "Mr Dumpy" (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 3 June 2021 22:50 (five years ago)

Midseason classic is upon us.

AP Chemirocha (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 5 June 2021 15:05 (five years ago)

so MODES

AP Chemirocha (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 11 June 2021 14:21 (four years ago)

yeah, i went "dominant"

burly crafty woodsman (James Harden) vs tall ethereal phantom (forksclovetofu), Friday, 11 June 2021 16:46 (four years ago)

Got credit for "diatonic"!

jaymc, Friday, 11 June 2021 16:48 (four years ago)

In a long discussion about that elsewhere.

AP Chemirocha (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 11 June 2021 16:56 (four years ago)

My contention is that the question was insufficiently pinned.

AP Chemirocha (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 11 June 2021 16:56 (four years ago)

if you have heard of "modes" and know what some of them are called you would always just write "modes" there idk

Clara Lemlich stan account (silby), Friday, 11 June 2021 17:01 (four years ago)

Indeed

AP Chemirocha (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 11 June 2021 17:12 (four years ago)

ive heard of modes but didn't remember the word so i was like "lydian scale, mixolydian scale, they aren't chromatic so they must be diatonic" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

still lost

Kompakt Total Landscaping (Will M.), Friday, 11 June 2021 21:51 (four years ago)

i know shit about music theory but happened to read a sci-fi-ish book that mentioned the mixolydian mode in april

highlight of my season is that out of nowhere i pulled 'kirov' out of my ass to correctly answer our (thus far) hardest question

mookieproof, Friday, 11 June 2021 23:58 (four years ago)

Anyone else forget to submit?
