Got this. Seems like I had previously had a predecessor app called WAniki which seems to be gone now.

So it hasn’t gotten bad for me yet- still only on Level 1, with no vocabulary unlocked yet- but can well imagine the tsunami of combinatorial explosions that is coming soon.

if you already know some vocab then the first several levels are gonna be pretty trivial and having to learn names for the radicals is kinda obnoxious

I pretty much know all the vocabulary that is coming up but I don’t always know the pronunciations they want for the kanji and/or I mistype them so I guess that’s useful practice. I am trying to cross check their names for the radicals with other lists. Well one at least.

Like what they call the drop is usually the dot, and construction is usually craft.

Also usually know the Japanese readings, which I still might mistype, but not necessarily the Chinese readings.

Unfortunately the only thing that can stop yourself from getting buried is self-restraint. It’s very tempting to think I have some spare time I’ll just learn a few more things. If you get that urge, I would recommend going and finding something to read in Japanese.

Keep in mind that I followed none of this advice, but i am now quite good at reading stuff in japanese so YMMV.

The default Lesson Batch size is five. Does that make a difference, did you have it higher?

Like I just had 21 new lessons show up. Maybe I will just do five for now....

once the vocab starts hitting you'll never get through it all 5 at a time, theres like 100+ per level

well i guess you'll eventually get through it but it'll be real slow

Review at whatever rate I guess, but don’t do new lessons too fast to at least try and control the spigot

Tweaking some of my other settings now

I set it to pair the reading and the meaning, aka back-to-back, and to do the reading first. Also set it to Show All Kanji Readings. And just noticed that typing in an ON reading for Vocabulary that wants a KUN reading allows a do-over or two and doesn’t immediately count as an error.

Does it ever give indication when it is about to unlock?

Ah, okay. Level 2 got unlocked yesterday and it sent me an email warning me to pace myself, eventually if not now.

Can see that this, like so many things, can be addictive and overwhelming.

In another news, looked at Busuu just now and their Japanese cause seems to have been revamped for the better. Probably too easy for anyone on this thread but still.

So I am mostly using the app but the dashboard on the web has at least one important usage.

One thing being the web dashboard has a good way of showing you what you missed on your last review.

And I’m trying to slow walk my way through Level 3, which supposedly will take six days and change instead of three, which is fine with me.

One thing that still irks me is the way ‘n’ works.

Anyway, feel like slow-walking *might just work.* Not trying to learn all the Kanji right away, trying to train myself to recognize the radicals and the ON and KUN readings to strengthen my recall and ability to use multi-radical lookup, for one thing.

Tried setting it to switch automatically to Japanese keyboard when needed but then it doesn’t switch back to English.

I think it’s easier just to use their built in IME. You aren’t fighting the keyboard’s desire to convert things to kanji then.

Also prepare yourself to get annoyed that a lot of what Wanikani teaches as ‘radical’ aren’t radicals in the strictest sense of the word.

Yes. I agree, thanks. Trying not to get annoyed by that, haven't seen it too much, but maybe it will annoy me. Also, thanks so much for the advice on going slow.

In principle, I think it should annoy me though, will see if it actually does.

The thing they call The Slide is that considered a radical? Or just katakana ノ?

Also, I mess with different dictionaries but recently I discovered something nice on the one called simply Japanese: if you hit the Speak button when you look up a kanji it will say all the ON and KUN readings.

And the app named Japanese also does the nice thing of showing all the readings on the history list.

Finishing Level 3 in a few days. Suppose I will pony up for the Premium. One thing I think needs to be managed is the explosion of content when a new level is reached, when you get both the, um, new radicals as well as all the vocabulary you have unlocked.

Do you still recommend bunpro, Ed?

Taking a look now, trying to figure out how to use it.

I’m not using Bunpro at the moment but I have done. On balance not the best tool for testing your grammar, or at least not the one for me.

Most recently I’ve been using renshuu.org. Probably because the JLPT question style fits nicely with the lessons I’m doing.

Okay, that looks pretty interesting. Wondering how you choose your lessons.

Seems like the web page works a little better than the app maybe.

It wants me to learn 80 things a day. Okay.

I should have warned the the interface is shockingly bad.

As in you’d really have to work hard to design a worse one.

But it’s OK once you get it set up and select some things to work on.

In other news, it feels like kind of a cheat when unlocking the Kanji only gives you the vocabulary word that is just the Kanji with the same pronunciation.

I guess I can just give myself extra credit and look ahead at the Level 41 word that uses the on’yomi.

So just hit level 4, which unlocked a bunch of level 4 kanji and vocabulary in addition to the level 4 radicals and the level 3 vocabulary that got unlocked. Combinatorial Kanji Explosion!

Seems like it takes a bare minimum of a week to get through a level.
