a picture search for racecourses near junkyards brings up some odd results.

Nothing to suggest that the racecourse and junkyard are near each other though

cherry blossom, Thursday, 22 April 2021 04:02 (five years ago)

Not the racecourse in Hobart or Launceston as far as I can tell, but they both have the same type of railings, so this could be Aus/NZ.

Zelda Zonk, Thursday, 22 April 2021 06:03 (five years ago)

i was getting results for londonw33d.net in my picture search.

Is the sheep grazing on the racecourse a factor?

cherry blossom, Monday, 26 April 2021 11:45 (five years ago)

You could say it's a bit of a clue. I honestly thought the racecourse would make this quite getable. Do people want another pic?

ignore the blue line (or something), Monday, 26 April 2021 12:02 (five years ago)

The racecourse does feel like a pretty big clue, especially with the sheep. Lets go a bit longer before next pic, feels like we should be able to get it from here

cherry blossom, Monday, 26 April 2021 12:20 (five years ago)

I don't know a ton about racecourses but I feel like they don't usually allow sheep on them. And the grass looks a little worn too

Chepstow is the only racecourse I know of in Wales.

no sheep anywhere though

koogs, Monday, 26 April 2021 13:41 (five years ago)

the sheep may be red herrings then

StanM, Monday, 26 April 2021 14:26 (five years ago)

No they're definitely sheep

I'm not adding any help to identifying it but I have a question about the two small brown (fur?) things that seem to be attached the the fence in the foreground. They look identical to each other.

Diggin Holes (Ste), Monday, 26 April 2021 14:58 (five years ago)

(almost anyway)

tbh it's not a question either. Just weird.

I think your monitor resolution must be playing up, those looks like red herrings to me

cherry blossom, Monday, 26 April 2021 15:06 (five years ago)

btw i'm referring to these two, not the larger grey things

I think someone used the clone tool

StanM, Monday, 26 April 2021 18:08 (five years ago)

I just thought 'fuck it I'll go through that list alba posted but actually search the names in google maps for hi-res pics', luckily it was the second one on the list or i might have died. So, Invercargill!

Woo!!

Alba, Tuesday, 27 April 2021 14:49 (five years ago)

Finally!

I thought somebody would get it fairly quickly after Alba's link especially when the introductory paragraph starts "There are 52 racecourses in New Zealand, from Ascot Park at Invercargill in the South..."

ignore the blue line (or something), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 14:51 (five years ago)

ha. I thought Dunedin and there was one that looked a bit close but didnt check Invercargill

cherry blossom, Tuesday, 27 April 2021 14:54 (five years ago)

does Google Streetview automatically clone tool stuff? those two identical things on the fence are there in several angles

StanM, Tuesday, 27 April 2021 15:01 (five years ago)

oh, it does - the white curvy bit on the fence above is doubled too

StanM, Tuesday, 27 April 2021 15:02 (five years ago)

it'll be part of the stitching algorithm

koogs, Tuesday, 27 April 2021 15:12 (five years ago)

Invercargill is possibly the ugliest place name I've ever heard in my life.

Truly hope the Maori take over again and call it by its rightful name, Waihōpai

it's like edging for your mind (the table is the table), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 15:47 (five years ago)

The Inver- part is nice, the -Cargill part not so much.

Authoritarian Steaks (Tom D.), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 15:53 (five years ago)

Also it doesn't make sense unless it stands on the River Cargill, which it doesn't.

Authoritarian Steaks (Tom D.), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 15:56 (five years ago)

I mean, it should be called Waihōpai anyway.

it's like edging for your mind (the table is the table), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 15:57 (five years ago)

Invercargill's second appearance on the thread, also appearing last April

cherry blossom, Tuesday, 27 April 2021 15:59 (five years ago)

What are the chances!

ignore the blue line (or something), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 16:24 (five years ago)

Apologies for the thread faux pas.

I guess the ugliness of the name suggests some sort of context of aesthetics thing because coming from the north of England where gill means stream and living in Scotland where Inver, as Tom D. has acknowledged, Inver means river mouth, the name doesn't read badly but without that I can certainly see how it would

ignore the blue line (or something), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 16:29 (five years ago)

I mean, it should be called Waihōpai anyway

Notwithstanding this of course

ignore the blue line (or something), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 16:36 (five years ago)

No reason a city can't make a repeat appearance!

cherry blossom, Tuesday, 27 April 2021 16:49 (five years ago)

It's interesting, Philadelphia has a LOT of Lenape (aka indigenous) names and a LOT of Welsh and Dutch names, so I'm used to some somewhat off-kilter naming situations— for example, I had many friends who went to Bala Cynwyd middle school, and I live near the Schuylkill River. I think that the residue of the Cargill corporation sort of rubs off on Invercargill and makes it more ugly than it actually is, to my eyes and ears.

the actual pictures don't make it seem very appealing either tbh

OK, so I'm just reading about the Welsh Tract...

How'd you get Finland?

a (waterface), Thursday, 29 April 2021 15:02 (five years ago)

It was obviously (Central or Northern) Europe. Found an identical Finnish traffic sign for bus + taxi lane. Then found that bus: part of the Vainion Liikenne fleet. checked the company’s Finnish Wikipedia page: active in quite a large section of the country, but I decided to try Turku first, as it was mentioned a lot (and I was guessing it wasn’t going to be Helsinki again, because we had it not too long ago), and yes, the church tower matched Turku Cathedral, so then it was off to Google Maps – found the spot quite quickly.

textbook case, I think. this thread taught me well.
