I’m three weeks out from my 2nd shot—beginning to feel like things were going toward normal. Then today i get an email that 4 kids at my son’s school are positive and a call that my niece has Covid.

Just had my first AZ jab (after receiving a call from my GP to say there were spares - thanks to esteemed local Ilxor Dog Latin for the tipoff). 20 mins turnaround from hanging up the phone to a needle in my arm, nice work NHS.Feeling fine so far and more than a little relieved.

Interesting strategy - NC is keeping their mask mandate until 67% of all those age 16+ are vaccinated. https://t.co/nrq9LNkmK0— Ed MD (@notdred) April 21, 2021

can definitely quibble with the 67% target, but I like this kind of idea
― Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Wednesday, 21 April 2021 19:04 (five years ago)
Looks like I'm going to be testing my vaccination really quick. Just got a jury duty summons for about two weeks after I hit full vaxxed up status after my second shot. I mean, supposedly I'll be as protected as I can, but genuinely not happy about having to jump back in with both feet in a crowded courthouse that I can realistically only access by 45 minutes each way on public transportation.
― soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 21 April 2021 19:40 (five years ago)
it's weird but you're protected! live it up! on, uh jury duty lol
― Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 21 April 2021 20:14 (five years ago)
Honestly the only reason I'm nervous is that I'll still have an unvaccinated child at home. Given how careful I've been the last year, just the thought of climbing on a crowded train to sit in a crowded building all day is (understandably) giving me a ton of anxiety - though I'm not sure how much of that will be valid once I'm fully vaxxed up.
― soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 21 April 2021 20:16 (five years ago)
Jury duty is fun and valuable, but "unvaccinated child at home" seems like a reasonable excuse for deferment.
― bobo honkin' slobo babe (sic), Wednesday, 21 April 2021 20:23 (five years ago)
Normally I would be oddly excited about a summons, not so much at the moment. Apparently my county has just restarted more jury trials within the last month or so.
The summons came with a flier that really leaned into the "yes this is during a pandemic but this is your civic duty to serve, but don't worry we'll seat you far apart and clean the courtrooms frequently". They only specific reference to deferments is that they've lowered the age deferment from 70 to 65.

I'm sure this has been asked already but...if you have a family history of thrombosis and clotting, is the AZ vaccine a bad idea?

Gah, had to delay my 2nd shot because of my exposure to my kids. I tried to slip in there, but they told me to come back Tuesday so that I'm past my 14-day quarantine. I don't love the idea of doing it midweek in case I have to stay in bed for a day, but I'll muddle thru I guess.

We're all good, just waiting out our quarantines/isolation. We'll all be clear this weekend. I haven't retested since last Friday, when I was still negative, but have had zero signs of symptoms of any kind.

just under 3 million vaxed yesterday, which is less than the 3.5 million vaxxed a week earlier.
really hoping that if vaccination trails off that it at least stays high enough to get enough people inoculated.
cases are declining for second week in a row, on the other hand, which is a good sign, but....
words can't express how angry i will be if we have assholes who refuse to get vaccinated to the point where we can't properly deal with COVID, while countries who have people dying by the thousands daily are begging to be vaccinated.

Just got results from my 4th/final COVID test of the quarantine, which ends today. Negative throughout, despite fairly heavy exposure. Score one for Pfizer 1st dose. Now I can leave the house, getting 2nd dose on Tuesday. Kid #1 has been back in school since last Tuesday, Kid #2 gets to go back on Monday. So it essentially all unfolded exactly like the data said it would.

New hadn't-wringing WaPo headline: "‘How did that happen?’ Catching covid-19 even after being vaccinated."
Details:
In recent data, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that at least 5,800 people had fallen ill or tested positive for the coronavirus two weeks or more after they completed both doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine. More than 95.9 million Americans are now fully vaccinated.
My dum-dum math: 5800/95,000,000 = 0.00006105263%
Other useful details:
The Pfizer and Moderna versions have consistently been shown to be above 90 percent effective, most recently for at least six months. Studies have also shown they are nearly 100 percent effective at ensuring that the small fraction of vaccinated patients who do contract the virus will not get severe cases or require hospitalization.
Suggested more useful headline in comments:
“99.99+ % of vaccinated people avoid hospitalization and death."
