iMacs in a bunch of fun colors. Where have I heard that before?
― DJI, Tuesday, 20 April 2021 17:23 (five years ago)
Iβm more entranced by the fact this lady explaining the iMac wearing a denim jumpsuit
― mh, Tuesday, 20 April 2021 17:30 (five years ago)
damn, denim imacs for real?
― Draymond is "Mr Dumpy" (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 20 April 2021 17:30 (five years ago)
the new iMac looks nice! Stupid stand though, and M1 arch still seems quite limiting - not many ports, 16gb memory limit etc.
― stet, Tuesday, 20 April 2021 17:38 (five years ago)
jesus christ the ipad pro can drive their expensive-ass display now
― mh, Tuesday, 20 April 2021 17:50 (five years ago)
okay what is that music transcription app because I NEED IT NOW
― 80's hair metal , and good praise music ! (DJP), Tuesday, 20 April 2021 17:55 (five years ago)
say more?
― Draymond is "Mr Dumpy" (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 20 April 2021 17:56 (five years ago)
podcast announcement yet?
― Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 20 April 2021 17:57 (five years ago)
oh lol i just realized this is one of their big press conference things happening
― Draymond is "Mr Dumpy" (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 20 April 2021 17:57 (five years ago)
i agree with this theoretically, but i'm still not running into any issues with 16GB.
― π ππ’π¨ (caek), Tuesday, 20 April 2021 17:58 (five years ago)
this sounds like magical thinking but is memory..... different with the apple chips?
― Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 20 April 2021 18:03 (five years ago)
I don't trust 16GB RAM, my obscene amounts of RAM now let me keep a couple of dozen Chrome tabs and Lightroom running without worrying about hurting the performance of Ableton Live.
― Joe Bombin (milo z), Tuesday, 20 April 2021 18:04 (five years ago)
xp yes. apparently (empirically) the SOC is so efficient that it needs to page in and out to RAM less often, so it needs less RAM for equivalent performance.
― π ππ’π¨ (caek), Tuesday, 20 April 2021 18:07 (five years ago)
like if you need 32GB of ram to hold an entire object in memory in numerical programming/machine learning stuff, then you need 32GB of ram and that's that. but that's almost never the situation even in high end desktop work IIUC (not a music person, ymmv).
― π ππ’π¨ (caek), Tuesday, 20 April 2021 18:08 (five years ago)
New iMac looks designed for Instagram likes and startup offices but I don't know why I'd consider it over a 16" M1 Macbook Pro whenever those come out anyway.
― Joe Bombin (milo z), Tuesday, 20 April 2021 18:09 (five years ago)
other than specialized situations like video editing and high-end gaming, i don't get stationary desktop machines at all. don't you ever want to finish that email from your couch?
― lukas, Tuesday, 20 April 2021 18:11 (five years ago)
the next airpods pro case is going to have an integrated airtag, right? I absolutely could use that
― mh, Tuesday, 20 April 2021 18:14 (five years ago)
Once you get used to a 27" 5K screen it's hard to go back (and the only comparable screen on the market is $1300 by itself) but I'm getting used to it.
Ports is the other big one - but the new iMacs have 1 more port than a MBP (and the entry level two fewer) so that's going to be less of a draw.
― Joe Bombin (milo z), Tuesday, 20 April 2021 18:15 (five years ago)
technically the same number as a MBP but since 1 gets eaten up by power I figure it doesn't really count
― Joe Bombin (milo z), Tuesday, 20 April 2021 18:16 (five years ago)
I would prefer an iMac solely for screen real estate; it makes working on scores much, much easier

― Draymond is "Mr Dumpy" (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 20 April 2021 18:48 (five years ago)
okay I promise I'll let it go (lucky for you I gotta get lunch) but consider this: sometimes I write emails to friends. you know, those people you didn't meet through work that you used to see.
― lukas, Tuesday, 20 April 2021 18:50 (five years ago)
i recognize those english words but cannot discern their meaning

definitely getting airtags, since 1) they made car keys cost $400 to replace 2) my 3 year old discovered "hide the car keys"
― π ππ’π¨ (caek), Tuesday, 20 April 2021 18:59 (five years ago)
I don't think I've ever written a friendly e-mail, that's what texts, messages and calls are for.
― Joe Bombin (milo z), Tuesday, 20 April 2021 18:59 (five years ago)
xps yeah hard for me to imagine going below 27'' 5K again. but i'm not partial to laptops anyway
― Nhex, Tuesday, 20 April 2021 19:16 (five years ago)
― stet, Tuesday, 20 April 2021 20:03 (five years ago)
The iMac 5k was much cheaper than there total of a standalone 5k LG and even a lower-powered MBP when I priced it up. I also kinda just like the all-in-one-ness.
― stet, Tuesday, 20 April 2021 20:05 (five years ago)
I'm just about to go for an M1 13" MacBook Air and an LG Ultrafine screen (the 24" as the 27" is like hen's teeth in the UK) for my photography work and day to day.
The M1 27"+ iMac is going to be a while yet and it'll cost a fortune when it does appear.
The M1 Air and LG screen combo is cheaper than the current iteration of the 27" intel iMac I was considering before.

i hope they sell this separately. i'd buy it.

and one with a number pad built in
― Joe Bombin (milo z), Tuesday, 20 April 2021 22:30 (five years ago)
definitely wondering about an iMac, basically donβt go anywhere with a laptop anymore and one of the new iMacs next to my existing HP 4K would be pretty functional.
That said Iβm interested to see how functional an iPad Pro plus external monitor would be.
― American Fear of Scampos (Ed), Tuesday, 20 April 2021 22:34 (five years ago)
been wondering why they haven't done that yet, or even one w a touchbar. Not that I'd want a touchbar, just seems like something Apple might've done.
Count me among the many who don't get why they wouldn't take this iMac refresh as the chance to finally get rid of the chin and bezels. How much thicker would that make the computer? How much better would it look?
And for people shopping for second monitors who care about color, the order goes Eizo > NEC or BenQ. LG, Asus, HP, Dell Ultrasharp all make decent monitors, but it's really about Eizo or NEC.
― dan selzer, Tuesday, 20 April 2021 22:46 (five years ago)
The touchbar is dead.
― Canon in Deez (silby), Tuesday, 20 April 2021 22:55 (five years ago)
i hated the touchbar on my old mac almost as much as I love being able to log in with my fingerprint on my new
― joygoat, Wednesday, 21 April 2021 00:13 (five years ago)
^this
Touchbar is such a waste of time.
― American Fear of Scampos (Ed), Wednesday, 21 April 2021 00:20 (five years ago)
worse than that. i press the one on my work laptop accidentally.
― π ππ’π¨ (caek), Wednesday, 21 April 2021 00:25 (five years ago)
Iβve got around that by using an external keyboard but when I was using the internal one I would accidentally strike the paste button in Microsoft office products almost every time I went to type an βeβ.
― American Fear of Scampos (Ed), Wednesday, 21 April 2021 02:55 (five years ago)
across the intervening row of number keys?I just set my touchbar to be the standard function keys, effectively negates it because I hate the stupid thing.
― assert (MatthewK), Wednesday, 21 April 2021 03:30 (five years ago)
touchID on desktops/laptops is truly great, an actual leap forward in usability. paired with something like 1password it means i never have to type in a password again, for anything.
― Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 21 April 2021 07:01 (five years ago)
I agree!
― DJI, Wednesday, 21 April 2021 15:58 (five years ago)
Itβs good, but Apple does still make you type the system password at least once a day I find.
― Alba, Wednesday, 21 April 2021 16:13 (five years ago)
I do it more often cause itβs quicker than lifting up the lid when have the MacBook closed and hooked up to an external monitor and keyboard, so a TouchID latter would be great.
― Alba, Wednesday, 21 April 2021 16:14 (five years ago)
external keyboard + touchid + 1password yes please
― π ππ’π¨ (caek), Wednesday, 21 April 2021 17:41 (five years ago)
now Iβm just having really dumb ideas like βwill touchid in the new keyboard work if you... pair it with an iPad?!?β
― mh, Wednesday, 21 April 2021 19:49 (five years ago)
it's M1 (i.e. T2 in the SOC) only, so my guess would be yes in the new ipad pro, no in the other ones.
― π ππ’π¨ (caek), Wednesday, 21 April 2021 19:50 (five years ago)
Itβs good, but Apple does still make you type the system password at least once a day I find.β Alba, Wednesday, 21 April 2021 17:13
I only have to enter my system password about once a week (plz don't steal my M1 MBA with touch ID and cut off my finger with this knowledge)
