That’s what I figured, thanks so much for confirming. Assuming that allows you to add scoring notes for the commissioner on the fly.

I guess when you write the recap offline you just add in the stats at the end and any comments about ease of play, congrats to winners, etc.

Also have I mentioned: my fingerprint, it me.

Now feeling I should have done slightly better on Leee’s 1DS because of Reading Ulysses

It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 17 April 2021 04:14 (five years ago)

Feel like there's definitely a divide between people who deliberately study for 1DSes and MLs and those who don't. I guess I'm more interested testing what I already know than what I can recall after cramming.

Btw, just noticed that Chicago improv legend TJ J@g0d0wsk1 finished 46th in Improv. We both went 11/12 and missed the same question, but I did a better job with moneying.

jaymc, Saturday, 17 April 2021 04:57 (five years ago)

Do you do improv, jaymc?

It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 17 April 2021 11:57 (five years ago)

Came to say I am getting crushed in both MLs. I wasn’t expecting to do well, just wanted to be one of the gang, not too mumped up but still.

It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 17 April 2021 12:00 (five years ago)

I did improv in college (with Daily Show correspondent Jordan Klepper), took a few classes at iO about 12 years ago, and have had friends in the Chicago scene.

Does anyone want to briefly explain MD2 of the GKPL to me? I see that "straight" is a "hand" in poker, but that may be a red herring, since I can't make sense of any of the other.

The first five answers all correspond to playing card rankings in descending order:
K (abbreviation for strikeout)
Q (first letter in quartermaster)
J (shape of candy cane)
10 (Hamilton is on the $10 bill)
9 (Ode to Joy = 9th Symphony)

I get it now that I saw the smith's recap, but there was absolutely no way I was going to figure that one out myself.

the portentous pepper (govern yourself accordingly), Saturday, 17 April 2021 21:11 (five years ago)

Ah! Somewhat fiendish, but not utterly impossible, I guess. I like the out-of-the-boxness of J for candy cane. Thanks!

anatol_merklich, Saturday, 17 April 2021 21:42 (five years ago)

American revolution: a victory! a victory!

1(1)-0(0), granted, but I'll take it.

anatol_merklich, Friday, 23 April 2021 11:18 (five years ago)

Just noticed that forks and I are in the same General Knowledge Puzzle League ML group and are facing each other today. Good luck!

jaymc, Friday, 23 April 2021 14:25 (five years ago)

That ML has been challenging but rewarding. American Revolution, on the other hand, might be the hardest ML I've ever played. I'm no American Revolution buff, but I'm interested enough in American history that I thought I might do a little better than I am. Feels like there are a LOT of YEKIOYD answers and not many alternative entry points.

jaymc, Friday, 23 April 2021 14:28 (five years ago)

lol i am dead last in the general knowledge quiz, not doing well!

Draymond is "Mr Dumpy" (forksclovetofu), Friday, 23 April 2021 14:44 (five years ago)

I am getting crushed in both of those, but once in a while manage to eke out a win in GKPL. Think the best I have done in AmRev is a 0(0)-0(0) tie.

Bewlay Brothers & Sister Rrose (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 23 April 2021 15:55 (five years ago)

As someone who takes this stuff way too seriously, I'm glad I'm not doing any of the current MLs.

That said, I did really well in the New Year's 1DS, which is especially pleasing because it wasn't even on my radar till the day of.

Tahini Coates (Leee), Friday, 23 April 2021 18:27 (five years ago)

Are you going to do the next two MLs that are queued up?

Bewlay Brothers & Sister Rrose (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 23 April 2021 18:34 (five years ago)

Just LGBT2. It's been a long time since I try to maintain literary pretensions, so probably wouldn't do well in 21st C Lit (ahem).

Tahini Coates (Leee), Friday, 23 April 2021 18:44 (five years ago)

i was interested in both of those but i don't like doing multiple mini leagues at the same time, so i ended up just picking 21st century lit

na (NA), Friday, 23 April 2021 18:46 (five years ago)

Yeah, two MLs at once can be kind of fatiguing

Bewlay Brothers & Sister Rrose (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 23 April 2021 18:51 (five years ago)

Ive somehow clawed my way to 2nd in puzzle league due to ridiculous luck in schedule. I face 1 and 3 this week tho, let's see how far that luck can stretch

enjoying the LGBTQ mini and did predictably well on the comic strip one day

I was fine with two but three did me in: On MD1 of 21st C Lit, I forgot to submit my answers for MD11 of Puzzle League.

jaymc, Sunday, 2 May 2021 20:55 (five years ago)

Which effectively put me out of the running for the championship.

jaymc, Sunday, 2 May 2021 20:55 (five years ago)

My 1DS is live for the next day or so (Just Audio: Familiar Songs).

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Monday, 3 May 2021 17:41 (five years ago)

cool, will play tonight!

Draymond is "Mr Dumpy" (forksclovetofu), Monday, 3 May 2021 18:07 (five years ago)

I played and enjoyed. Made an unforced error though.

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 3 May 2021 19:45 (five years ago)

As I also did on Outlaw Country, where it really cost me.

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 3 May 2021 19:47 (five years ago)

Greg, yours is literally the only one today that I can MAYBE get one right!

Tahini Coates (Leee), Monday, 3 May 2021 21:32 (five years ago)

You didn't try Neo-Noir?

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 3 May 2021 21:42 (five years ago)

I submitted every one except Greg's.

Tahini Coates (Leee), Monday, 3 May 2021 21:43 (five years ago)

On another note, I am finding out it’s actually not bad to play along with a(n) ML that one is not registered in. No need to worry about wagering, for one thing.

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 3 May 2021 22:24 (five years ago)

Interesting that only Greg and I did Outlaw Country.

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 3 May 2021 22:33 (five years ago)

I generally try to do every pop music 1DS

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Monday, 3 May 2021 22:57 (five years ago)

Makes sense. I just noticed that I guy I recently became acquainted with seems to do every single 1DS. Seems to be somewhat excessive imho.

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 3 May 2021 23:21 (five years ago)

Waiting to see how I did on Greg's and a few others. Mine goes live tomorrow, I am a bit nervous.

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 4 May 2021 17:02 (five years ago)

The thing about doing a ton of 1DSes is that it gives additional information for your opponents on how to defend you.

Tahini Coates (Leee), Tuesday, 4 May 2021 17:19 (five years ago)

Does it go into the statistics?

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 4 May 2021 17:24 (five years ago)

No, but the more dedicated defenders can click through to your profile and see your full 1DS history, which might feasibly help on certain questions.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Tuesday, 4 May 2021 17:49 (five years ago)

It’s (a)live!

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 09:33 (five years ago)

Greg, did you send your testers a PM thank you as well as thanking them in the recap?

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 13:39 (five years ago)

Anyway, y'all come on and come and play my Isaac Newton 1DS if you feel it is in your wheelhouse.

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 13:51 (five years ago)

Shocked that your last name isn’t Redd or even Blecch

Heh

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 14:05 (five years ago)

Okay, I've recently gone north of 200 submissions so I can die young, stay pretty and you can bury me happy. Well, um, anyway, I think you catch my drift.

I have never PM'd to thank testers except once or twice for a couple of testers who really went above and beyond, but a lot of people have mentioned on the message boards that they like it. I test for a lot of 1DS's myself and it's pretty rare to get any messages from the smith.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 15:41 (five years ago)

I did it just now. I received a bunch of these but they were very formal, which was still sort of nice. I tried to make it informal and I sent it right today
as a reminder in case they want to look at the actual contest.
