There is not a single honest person in this country who, if they know their recent history, can't say that the US is committing an ongoing genocide against Indigenous people. Given that 8 of 10 of these 'stages' of genocide can easily be filled, looking at today's climate, it's absurd to parse terms— it's ongoing genocide, plain and simple. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten_stages_of_genocide

it's like edging for your mind (the table is the table), Monday, 12 April 2021 14:49 (five years ago)

the level of racist oppression involved is plenty bad enough, but calling it genocide just makes you sound foamy at the mouth

These are not rookie numbers.

UK vaccine rollout days away from extending to those aged 40-50.

Check out these whopping takeup rates by age groups:

80+: 95.2%
75-79: 100%
70-74: 96.9%
65-69: 93.8%
60-64: 96.9%
55-59: 93.6%
50-54: 87.0%

(Figures are percentage who've had at least one dose in England)

seems ultra-stupid on the back of Europe and UK having just been through all this and it was correctly overridden. Dumb, but I'm not surprised.

I guess the system works? In my non-expert opinion, though, I suppose the CDC/FDA could've said the subsector of the population shouldn't get the J&J.

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 13 April 2021 12:22 (five years ago)

the way conspiracists reject all "official" stories, some anti-vaxxers might start clamoring for J&J shots now

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Tuesday, 13 April 2021 12:27 (five years ago)

Official narratives are doubly reliable when they prove your point.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 13 April 2021 12:30 (five years ago)

It definitely seems counter productive, from a strategy standpoint, but it's worth a reminder that afaict *all* of these vaccines are being rolled out with emergency authorization, and for all we know it's quite possible that *none* of them would have been approved (at least not yet) had they had gone through the regular rigmarole. I think they're doing the best they can to do rapid trials and ensure safety in real time. If they discovered any of them had unwanted effects and then kept that secret, that would a huge scandal, wouldn't it? I think that's one reason why the US has more or less planned to have an excess of vaccine, not because they're hoarding it, but because they want options should they need them. Australia, for example, put all its faith in AZ, and with that one out of the picture there now, suddenly that country's vaccination goals have been punted until next year.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 13 April 2021 12:36 (five years ago)

the way conspiracists reject all "official" stories, some anti-vaxxers might start clamoring for J&J shots now

Conspiracy theorists are definitely consistent in that way, yes

anecdotal certainly but not nothing (stevie), Tuesday, 13 April 2021 13:02 (five years ago)

The problem with the “they shouldn’t have announced it this way” criticism is that there is an obligation to make the health care community aware that this is a possible side effect. Have to start there, then discuss whether pause is warranted too

— Ed MD (@notdred) April 13, 2021

I'm not smart enough to know what the right way to do this is. I do know that anti-vaxxers will run with anything, whether it's a truth or lie. And media coverage is frequently negative even when the vaccine news has been great. Seems like a true no-win scenario.

— Ed MD (@notdred) April 13, 2021

This is otm. They’re pausing for a couple of days to train doctors to identify and treat these symptoms. There isn’t a good way to do this.

I can’t stop thinking of the anonymous Republican operative quoted in the WaPo article about the Biden-Harris infrastructure plan who said in panic that they even associating it with “cancel culture” didn’t decrease its popularity in focus groups.

Biden administration to lift abortion pill restriction amid pandemic

The Biden administration will temporarily lift a medication abortion restriction that requires abortion pills to be dispensed in person, reversing a Trump-era policy and handing abortion-rights groups one of their first major victories of the new administration.

In a two-page letter letter to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists, a professional medical organization, acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock announced Monday evening that her agency would "exercise enforcement discretion" surrounding the FDA's requirement that abortion patients using mifepristone to terminate a pregnancy obtain the pills in-person from a medical provider. The decision will allow providers in some states to prescribe via telemedicine and send the pills in the mail.
