Nothing yet. I've been offered appointments, but I'm waiting because I feel like other people need it more than me. I barely go out of the house, and when I do I'm masked up and stand as far away from other people as possible. I'm high-risk on paper because I have diabetes, but I'm low-risk because of my behavior and lifestyle. I'll get around to it eventually.

but also fuck you (unperson), Monday, 5 April 2021 17:53 (five years ago)

really loving the recent trend of criticizing people for wanting people to wear masks still and accusing them of "not paying attention to the science," when both the CDC (as of February 2021) and many of the existing studies (as of January 2021) still recommend that you do that

like, Iโ€™m eating an elephant head (katherine), Monday, 5 April 2021 17:53 (five years ago)

When the daily new case count is in the single digits, I'll unmask. Maybe. I really liked not catching a cold this winter!

THe new What The FUP? goes into the science of masks at length as well as other Covid fears.
Quite good so it was.

Moving the celebratory posts to the KIP covid thread was fairly oblivious from all concerned but in the grander scheme of things we must make allowances i guess

your own personal qanon (darraghmac), Monday, 5 April 2021 18:46 (five years ago)

Jon, let me know when you're ready; would love to get you out there.

Dan, sorry you've got to go to extremes to get a jab but happy that you have something lined up before the end of the week!

Unperson, don't do the "I feel like other people need it more than me" thing! Get it done while you can, as soon as you can and get it out of the way! You are part of the public health and it'll do you and us all good to get this taken care of!

Non-US people, sending hopes and double masks your way.

the UK was this big success story, but feels a little like it's just ground to a halt over here.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Monday, 5 April 2021 20:01 (five years ago)

well I got it in Ireland so that's ok.
12 weeks between shots but guess taht's ok.

Stevolende, Monday, 5 April 2021 20:11 (five years ago)

Normally hate Stewart Leeโ€™s columns (as a fan of him in general who just hates wacky newspaper columns) but he wrote an alright one recently which made the point that Johnson et al spent the whole pandemic fucking up royally & insisting it was inappropriate to make international comparisons, but as soon as something is going well relative to other places itโ€™s suddenly ok - I wonder if the โ€œlumpyโ€ supply starts to put us on a comparable footing to our neighbour will it suddenly become inappropriate to have league tables again

jammy mcnullity (wins), Monday, 5 April 2021 20:13 (five years ago)

yeah, plenty of time for the uk to pluck defeat from the jaws of victory yet.

(checks this isn't the kip thread, posts)

koogs, Monday, 5 April 2021 20:16 (five years ago)

the assumption is that at least 30%, possibly more like 40 or 50% of the population of LA county got covid, so this partly the swedish herd immunity maneuver and partly vaccination kicking in. still, v nice.

LA County's coronavirus case numbers have fallen to levels not seen since March 2020 pic.twitter.com/nZhDX84E43

— Soumya (@skarlamangla) April 5, 2021

In the past three months, LA County's daily coronavirus case numbers have fallen 97%, from 14,200 on Jan. 5 to fewer than 400 in late March. Hospitalizations fell 92% in that time period. The number of daily deaths has dropped 96%.

An old friend appears to have gone full anti-lockdown, anti-mask, anti-vaccine. She even started a medium page that was essentially a listing and description of all of the "research" she's done.

I didn't push back, because she lives in Vancouver, BC, and we moved in similar circles but were never close...still, a little unnerving and disappointing to see.

it's like edging for your mind (the table is the table), Monday, 5 April 2021 20:51 (five years ago)

The thing she made a big deal about was this: https://gbdeclaration.org/

it's like edging for your mind (the table is the table), Monday, 5 April 2021 20:51 (five years ago)

Which...I mean, I heard about this way back when, and it's so easy to dismiss outright because it was sponsored by a Koch-funded libertarian thinktank. And this friend claims to be a leftist anti-capitalist! This whole pandemic is turning some sane people into total loons.

it's like edging for your mind (the table is the table), Monday, 5 April 2021 20:54 (five years ago)

It's such a head-fck. Sorry about your friend tabes, hope it's just a weird blip they need to get out of their system...?

I've not got a vaccine yet, not got much hope of one for ages.

kinder, Monday, 5 April 2021 20:55 (five years ago)

"Keeping these measures in place until a vaccine is available will cause irreparable damage" ... i have some news for those people

๐” ๐”ž๐”ข๐”จ (caek), Monday, 5 April 2021 20:55 (five years ago)

the UK was this big success story, but feels a little like it's just ground to a halt over here.

As discussed before we don't have the luxury of having more vaccine than we know what to do with.

Duncan Disorderly (Tom D.), Monday, 5 April 2021 21:07 (five years ago)

Also, let's not forget we've been pumped full of the cheap bloodclaat vaccine that no-one else will touch with a bargepole.

Duncan Disorderly (Tom D.), Monday, 5 April 2021 21:28 (five years ago)

i am officially eligible for vaccine tomorrow, i think. getting an appointment is another thing.

superdeep borehole (harbl), Monday, 5 April 2021 21:31 (five years ago)

The bludclaht vaccine that (possibly) affects 1 person in 600,000! Not bad odds, all told.

Ferguson today said (if it is in fact causal) it seems to be more of a risk in younger recipients - have to think itโ€™s still less of a risk than Covid tho, which also causes clots & can have nasty chronic effects for the young if unlucky

jammy mcnullity (wins), Monday, 5 April 2021 21:41 (five years ago)

i know i shouldnโ€™t think this way but iโ€™m like.... i got covid a year ago already, so should i really get The Clotter? i know i know

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Monday, 5 April 2021 21:44 (five years ago)

Nah a lot of ppl will be thinking that way. Which... could end up being an issue

I did get pretty groggy today, like I was walking through molasses. Kids said I sounded weird reading to them. Now feel mostly ok though.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 6 April 2021 03:34 (five years ago)

Gah. My wife and I both got the first shot on Saturday at different CVSs, with the second dose already prebooked for three weeks time. She never did the check-in on her phone, thinking the in-store check in would suffice. She was given her vaccine card when it was done. Then she got a text from them yesterday saying "because you missed or cancelled your appointment, we've cancelled your second dose appointment". She tried calling them yesterday and got stuck in call centre/hold hell and there are no appointments available online (I was up at midnight, 1am and 3am to check) to reschedule now. And it seems to be very hard to get a second dose at an NYC-run site, if you got your first dose outside their system.

After all of my neuroses and angst, I was able to make an appointment in MA for this weekend so my insane trip to MN is off

bemidji walmart called me yesterday asking if i could come in any earlier than my appt time. i can't, and was enough to unnerve me about the long drive. friend with family there said sister was at that exact walmart yesterday and the pharmacy had to announce multiple times over PA that there were available vaccines before anyone took them up on it though

global tetrahedron, Tuesday, 6 April 2021 15:50 (five years ago)

nice, congrats DJP

good luck in the system alba

G.A.G.S. (Gophers Against Getting Stuffed) (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 6 April 2021 15:51 (five years ago)

I'm guessing it's just psychological, but I feel weirdly much better than I've felt in a long time today. Maybe it's just mild depression lifting at the thought that I can start having more of a life again in a couple weeks/that there is light at the end of the tunnel. But I feel like my sinuses are clearer, I have more energy, I woke up feeling better than usual, etc.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 6 April 2021 15:58 (five years ago)

The idea that I can go to my old climbing gym with my mask on this weekend and hug my mom *inside her house* has certainly lifted my spirits.

Also I got my hours at work reduced, so I feel a little bit more like I have a life again.

it's like edging for your mind (the table is the table), Tuesday, 6 April 2021 16:18 (five years ago)

gym, hugs, concerts, restaurants, museums, having friends over all very exciting to me right now.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 6 April 2021 16:19 (five years ago)

My mother says she finally managed to register via phone in Maryland. I also tried to register online for her; we'll see if anything comes of either.

I would like to see the following groups of people tried, and possibly executed, on pay-per-view TV:
1) Scaremongers who don't know (or worse, don't care) that correlation is NOT necessarily causation.
2) Public health experts who, when planning vaccine rollout, seem not to have considered that some percentage of the most vulnerable populations have limited or no Internet access.
3) Governors or other authorities who played politics with vaccine distribution.

Infanta Terrible (j.lu), Tuesday, 6 April 2021 16:35 (five years ago)

I suppose I should have taken that to a more political COVID thread?

Infanta Terrible (j.lu), Tuesday, 6 April 2021 16:35 (five years ago)

oh good, now the UK is likely to stop first doses until July. Definitely feels like the wheels coming off, a bit.

colette, Tuesday, 6 April 2021 16:44 (five years ago)

Is this because the vaccine supply from India is drying up?

Duncan Disorderly (Tom D.), Tuesday, 6 April 2021 16:59 (five years ago)

hereโ€™s a story on the UK situation. not great!

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2021/apr/06/england-covid-vaccine-programme-could-slow-sharply-sage-warns

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 6 April 2021 22:58 (five years ago)

An expat buddy living in Amsterdam says there's basically no vaccine supply in the Netherlands, and they have no idea when they'll be offered... he claims the gov't haggled on prices a little too long and the drug companies took the business elsewhere. I think one of the vaccines is actually produced in Belgium, ironically.

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 6 April 2021 23:07 (five years ago)

TH, yes, that's the article I saw yesterday, the headline in particular is concerning, "Scientific committee forecasts drop to 2.7m jabs a week until July with little available for first doses"

colette, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 07:57 (five years ago)

Andy the Grasshopper, there was a pretty good article about the EU's vaccine challenges in last week's Economist: https://www.economist.com/briefing/2021/03/31/why-the-eus-covid-19-vaccination-programme-went-wrong

colette, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 07:58 (five years ago)

Update on our CVS hell: eventually managed to speak to someone at the store who just said "Oh yes, that's been happening to a few people who didn't check in online when they got here โ€“ย just come in at the time your cancelled appointment was and we'll be sure to give her the second dose, no problem". I guess we just have to trust him.

Alba, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 12:26 (five years ago)

Same reaction to the second Moderna shot as the first, only a bit worse: fever, aches, a few hours last night spent shivering then sweating under the blankets. Can't tell if it's passing fast or if that's just the Tylenol working.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 13:58 (five years ago)

BREAKING
MHRA there are still huge benefits of the vaccine in preventing Covid-19 and serious disease.
However, due to a very small number of blood clots in younger people, those under the age of 30 will be offered Pfizer or Moderna instead

— Carl Dinnen (@carldinnen) April 7, 2021

Scamp Granada (gyac), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 14:24 (five years ago)

Increasingly feeling like I'm the only dumb chump waiting to get the vax when it's actually 'my turn' (whatever that even means at this point). Almost everyone I know has gotten at least their first jab by now whether they technically qualified for it or not (most did not). So now I've got the twinned anxieties of fearing that nothing will be available once IL opens to all adults and that I'm just absolutely positively for sure going to get the 'vid just before I get the needle in my arm.

Anyway, has anybody linked to this?: https://hidrb.com/ I guess it's set up to text you when and if there are leftover doses in your area. I'm signed up, we'll see if it does what it says on the tin.
