Covid-19: Are cloth masks still effective? And other questions answered

This is interesting because, well, the "let's not wear face coverings" voices seem louder and it seems we're (UK) much more likely to end up in a "Oh, don't worry about covering your face" situation than a "Wear better coverings" one.

djh, Friday, 2 April 2021 16:46 (five years ago)

It's a continual frustration to explain how Miami-Dade, Florida's most populous County, has the highest case load yet the highest mask compliance. I haven't seen unmasked faces in stores since late March 2020.

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 2 April 2021 17:06 (five years ago)

we should wear masks but it's a second order effect to staying home. places where people are still going out voluntarily or because they have to work, and with high household occupancy, will always be worst hit even if you give everyone N95s.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Friday, 2 April 2021 18:05 (five years ago)

my wife just started at a co-working place in London and nobody wears masks there apparently. i didn’t think that was legal.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Friday, 2 April 2021 18:29 (five years ago)

Not confident venues will get the support they need to enforce this fairly and safely

California will allow indoor live events/performances starting April 15 for counties in red, orange and yellow tiers. Proof of vaccination or COVID-19 test will be required https://t.co/1xDBxnhISr

Of course they won't.

Canon in Deez (silby), Friday, 2 April 2021 20:35 (five years ago)

there is not a single person in this earth getting paid enough money to enfore the non-compliant to wear masks

boxedjoy, Friday, 2 April 2021 20:43 (five years ago)

just got my first shot of moderna, no ill effects yet. feels good to be in the endgame now

ciderpress, Friday, 2 April 2021 20:44 (five years ago)

Hold up, now AZ is being temporarily taken off the market *again*, for the *same* blood clot reason?

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 3 April 2021 14:03 (five years ago)

blood claat, that's what I've got in my vein

Stevolende, Saturday, 3 April 2021 14:05 (five years ago)

Re my above post about feeling rationally/irrationally guilty about not changing my life that much post-vaxx, this is the kind of thing that sets it off:

It’s actually really sad how many people want to stay in lockdown life forever. I think there will be a wide swath of American hikikomori. We should think about programs to help them. https://t.co/AOtAaHwVkm

— Nellie Bowles (@NellieBowles) April 2, 2021

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 3 April 2021 15:42 (five years ago)

Like, I get that for some people this has been really hard. But some of those people seem to think there is something wrong with me for not finding pandemic restrictions as hard as they've found them. (I am not going to say "lockdown" because come on, we in the US have not been locked down, I have been socializing with people throughout the entire pandemic, I am not a hikikomori because I've been hanging out with friends outside their house instead of inside.)

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 3 April 2021 15:45 (five years ago)

All I can derive from that tweet is that Nellie Bowles has a feeling.

Judge Roi Behan (Aimless), Saturday, 3 April 2021 16:29 (five years ago)

my wife and i just got dose one, paul simon’s “graceland” playing over the cvs speakers. got a little emotional, not gonna lie

only wish i got the jab ten minutes early to the tune of the pointer sisters’ “automatic”

voodoo chili, Saturday, 3 April 2021 16:31 (five years ago)

I also feel irrationally guilty for not feeling any strong emotions about getting the vaccine

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 3 April 2021 16:36 (five years ago)

I really don’t like it when extroverts try to “help” introverts.

brimstead, Saturday, 3 April 2021 16:43 (five years ago)

^the worst

It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 3 April 2021 16:53 (five years ago)

Actually the worst is when a natural introvert who has been “converted” does this.

It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 3 April 2021 16:54 (five years ago)

I'm not even an introvert! I'm a strong extrovert!

Mask game all over the place down here on the Kentucky border. Really no rhyme or reason.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 3 April 2021 17:27 (five years ago)

they're like Freud's hydraulic theories about the mind, that things build up and release... super compelling and intuitively grasped concepts that just have zero relationship to how the brain works or how humans actually behave

so tonight that I might ramona quimby (f. hazel), Saturday, 3 April 2021 17:36 (five years ago)

i hated that nellie bowles tweet (and i don't even know who she are) and that kind of impulse but her bio made me laugh:

Correspondent for the New York Times. Writing a collection of essays. Posting a short one about converting to Judaism every Thursday evening

every thursday evening i convert to judaism and write a substack about it

That tweet is stupid clickbait for disapproving ppl to get outraged about.

Judging by the avidity with which disapproving people get outraged about stupid clickbait, I must conclude that such outrage gives their lives a frisson of excitement they value quite highly. Providing them with stupid clickbait upon which to vent their splenetic fury therefore performs a valuable public service which should be recognized and celebrated.

Judge Roi Behan (Aimless), Saturday, 3 April 2021 19:16 (five years ago)

OK, fine -- the tweet hurt my feelings, I said in a thread explicitly marked as the place to express rational/irrational fears that it hurt my feelings, apparently I am either a stupid person who falls for clickbait or a disapproving ninny avidly looking for something to get outraged about? Jeez, I'll keep my irrational shit to myself.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 3 April 2021 20:37 (five years ago)

Hey, eeph, I didn't mean for that to reflect on you and I apologize! I meant, as someone who also has actually had a really high quality of life despite everything this year, that it's a strawman argument in the first place--if you care about mental health, we could just FUND MENTAL HEALTH or healthcare or meet people's needs or WHATEVER. The whole "some people are unwell because they were okay staying in" framework feels to me like the "cowering in basements" wording, ie "You can't just cower in fear in the basement, we have to get the economy started and not give into the virus!" It's just dumbass shit.

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Saturday, 3 April 2021 20:58 (five years ago)

Yeah sorry I guess I on some level knew you were not really directing it that way, I was just feeling a little chafed

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 3 April 2021 21:02 (five years ago)

sorry for existing

brimstead, Saturday, 3 April 2021 22:38 (five years ago)

yeah it must be really tough if you don't even care about leaving lockdown, imagine how hard that must be, alternatively, why not just shut the fuck up if it's not even bothering you? Jesus fucking Christ the lengths people will go to.

CP Radio Gorgeous (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 3 April 2021 22:53 (five years ago)

got my first dose (of moderna) this weekend and my main takeaway is you really don't realize how much you use your left (or non-dominant) arm. didn't get the horrible sickness others mentioned though.

I know second doses tend to have more side effects but having had my first Pfizer yesterday morning and zero adverse reaction I wonder if that bodes well for the second too.

Alba, Sunday, 4 April 2021 21:52 (five years ago)

I had no side effects other than cottonmouth. There's no logic or trend I can point to.

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 4 April 2021 21:56 (five years ago)

(Side effects after last week's second Pfizer jab, that is).

Had a half a Pfizer, didn’t feel anything, so I was like, I should take another one. Classic mistake

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 4 April 2021 22:55 (five years ago)

Did you get vaccinated, Tracer?

It Is Dangerous to Meme Inside (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 4 April 2021 23:00 (five years ago)

I got Moderna dose 1 this past Wednesday. Was fine until 4am Friday morning when I woke w horrific migraine-like headache and felt fatigued/nauseated for most of Friday. By Sat morning it had passed completely. Idk what it means for dose 2 but I’m not working Thurs/Fri atm so I can convalesce if I need to.
