Re: redneck areas, of course there are people fighting the good fight in such areas...and there are also lots of non-white people in those areas, too, particularly if we're talking about the southern Midwest and south. That alone is enough for me to think any white person who dismisses such areas is not just a snob but a racist.

This. Growing up in S. Illinois was a lot more diverse and moving to E. PA was a lot less diverse and way more racist.

younger hospitalizations also means that hospitalizations are going to become less predictive of deaths. Even in Michigan, the uptick in critical care and ventilators, so far, is not very big. Obviously v much hope not to be wrong, but I am still optimistic.

I'm almost entirely in favour of anyone who catches it under these circs dying, as long as they stay in their bedroom to do so, and don't spread the virus or clog up a hospital.

It's now two days after my second pfizer shot and I don't think I had any side effects? Slightly weirded out by that tbh because I was kind of looking forward to having some physical proof that the vaccine was working, but I guess I'll just have to take it on trust that it worked anyway.

I could drive 427 miles to get a shot. I'd rather be shot.

Due to job, eligible starting tomorrow for the shots as are 60-64 year olds and 2+ high risk medical conditions. Rumors are that work will have on-site jabs in May, so might wait until then, unless there's an obvious surplus so I don't feel I'm taking it from someone more at risk.

PBKR, I kept running into that same cycle but just as I thought, "alright, fuck this, but one more try before my meeting", I hit one that worked.

That should actually read:

Appointments Available > Schedule Your Vaccine > So Sorry, No Appointments Available in That Location > Update Availability > Appointments Available > etc. etc. etc.

I kept getting that too, but I ended up putting myself on the waitlist for a big vaccination center and heard back in a couple of days. So it's worth clicking on every location to see if they have a waitlist.

It also seems like, at least around here, that the availability definitely comes in waves. As of today, it's back to what I was seeing in previous weeks, nada anywhere within a 2-hour drive of Chicago, but plenty downstate once again. Seemed like lots of luck towards the end of week, which may be when supplies get firmed up for the following week and appointments open up.

Fuck Rite Aid - you seriously have to search for availability store by store? JFC!

I'm pretty much convinced getmyvaccine.org is populated with pharmacies that don't actually exist, because whenever it says there is a vaccine nearby, the link takes me to the Rite Aid website and that store cannot be found. Not that they don't have availability - the store literally doesn't exist.

If you have the ability to take a day off and drive somewhere, you could try calling pharmacies upstate first thing in the morning and asking if they have cancellations.

Lily fwiw I had almost no side effects from my second Pfizer dose, either. I got a little sleepy maybe 6 hours after it and took a nap, but I’m pregnant, so that’s not exactly a freak occurrence these days.

TX opened vaccines to the general public yesterday. Austin Public Health announced they'd be releasing 12,000 appointments in the evening. Then right before they released the appointments, they also announced that they were still only making them available to people in priority groups and that only 7,000 would be released instead, FFS.

There are some pharmacies in TX that have vaccines I could possibly sign up for, nearest is 180 miles away.

Lily Dale, I have a friend who *helped another friend move house* the day after getting his second Pfizer shot, so you're not totally alone.

one issue brought up by Austin Public Health is that they still have 260,000 people in priority groups registered who haven't signed up for a vaccine. This number has been pretty much the same for the past month. They are now trying to figure out if these people got vaccinated some other way so they can be removed from the list.

Last update, because I'm fucking furious and done for a while: appointments at nearest state facility now being given for May fucking 22 and still not actually available. Might as well schedule me for 2525.

pbkr and others, i would really not bother with rite aid, the site was wonky for me the entire time i tried to nab an appointment. nearly all the stores were unavailable and the ones that were would freeze rather than let you take next steps.

cvs is more reliable–if they have appointments available, they'll tell you and if you can't find anything by searching the zip code, try searching by city name. that's how i got my appt.

I wouldn't despair yet; that's how it looked in Seattle the day after they opened up eligibility to my group. It took a few days for the system to catch up to the change, and then a lot more vaccine came in and suddenly my coworkers and I were all able to schedule appointments within the next week.

this is all changing by the hour at the moment and that's to be expected given the seismic shifts in access over the past few days in many states; hopefully there will be some greater equilibrium by the start of the upcoming week

I’ve had stupidly good luck with CVS for my parents and myself. Check early everyday.

Just as a data point for you all in the US that are seeing expanded appointments, the UK has basically shut down 1st shots for the month of April because of shortages, so under 40s won't be eligible until May at the earliest. Local NHS trusts have even been told to stop using up leftovers on younger people, from what I hear.

The hope is that there will be enough stock for all the folks that got their first shot within the promised 12-week window.

I've said this before, and I usually don't say this sort of thing, but I wish that little fascist shit Cawthorn had died in that car accident. We'd all be better off.

It's been over a year. Anyone who's wilfully going out socialising indoors, unmasked, at this stage 100% knows what they're doing, and is directly risking the lives of hundreds of people as well as their own. If they've caught it while doing this, they have almost certainly also spread it. I don't want anyone to act like this, and then to catch the virus and die. But if they do catch it through truly sociopathic behaviour, perhaps we would be better off without their future actions.

So after stressing all day over trying to get a vaccine appointment, someone tells me: "Just go find the most Republican county near you and look them up."

Found ~ 150 slots in one county next to mine and ~ 100 in another. Signed up in less than 5 minutes.
