I thought they were more transmissible, but not more lethal. Though, honestly, I may be behind on new info on the variants.

This is where I got that idea: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/covid-variants-death-analysis-ontario-1.5964296
There's also this: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/ontario-covid-third-wave-younger-patients-1.5955838
I'm unsure if anyone outside of Ontario has come to these conclusions though

I'm just hoping to get jabbed before temps hit the 70s on the regular and everyone who has been cooped up for a year+ goes buck wild while I look forlornly out my window at the world *tear.

I find it hard to believe a surge in cases now would lead to the same level of hospitalizations and deaths it did in the winter
I also find it hard to believe that 50-70,000 new cases per day would lead to the same level of hospitalisations and deaths as 290,000 new cases per day, and wish she hadn't suggested that it would

Six deaths in 14 months, ten new cases in a week, a three-day lockdown / mask mandate, and 20,000 people contacted for tests by the neighbouring state if they crossed the border:
"I know this is a really big call, I know it's very tough – we've got Easter coming up, we've got school holidays coming up. But let's do it now and let's do it right and let's see if we can come through it the other end."
70,000 cases daily, "I'm not sure what the "impending doom" is about":
'CDC Director Walensky becomes emotional during today's covid briefing, saying she's ditching prepared remarks because she's scared of rising case numbers in the US. "Right now, I'm scared...I so badly want to be done...so I'm asking you to just hold on a little longer."'

I know this has sort of passed, but I say 'Insha'Allah' sometimes, but only when I'm visiting my old place of work, the Muslim burial ground where I used to help with services and dig graves. I would never use it outside of that context.
Re: redneck areas, of course there are people fighting the good fight in such areas...and there are also lots of non-white people in those areas, too, particularly if we're talking about the southern Midwest and south. That alone is enough for me to think any white person who dismisses such areas is not just a snob but a racist.

Xp the weekly average for COVID deaths in the US has fallen by 50% in the last 30 days. Thanks to vaccination it will likely continue to drop.

Hey fun fact: hospitalisations are no longer falling nationally, and they’re rising pretty quickly in a few places.

30% vaccinated is also a little misleading - how many of those people got their first shot a month ago or more?

18-59 year olds in general acting like everybody has been vaccinated at the same rate as 60+ year olds is approximately the least surprising thing, hope they don’t die.

younger hospitalizations also means that hospitalizations are going to become less predictive of deaths. Even in Michigan, the uptick in critical care and ventilators, so far, is not very big. Obviously v much hope not to be wrong, but I am still optimistic.

I'm almost entirely in favour of anyone who catches it under these circs dying, as long as they stay in their bedroom to do so, and don't spread the virus or clog up a hospital.
younger hospitalizations also means that hospitalizations are going to become less predictive of deaths. Even in Michigan, the uptick in critical care and ventilators, so far, is not very big.
iirc 1,721 deaths per million is still more than *checks notes* 36 per million

It's now two days after my second pfizer shot and I don't think I had any side effects? Slightly weirded out by that tbh because I was kind of looking forward to having some physical proof that the vaccine was working, but I guess I'll just have to take it on trust that it worked anyway.
― Lily Dale, Tuesday, 30 March 2021 14:43 (five years ago)
I could drive 427 miles to get a shot. I'd rather be shot.
― What's a vaccine? (PBKR), Tuesday, 30 March 2021 14:51 (five years ago)
Due to job, eligible starting tomorrow for the shots as are 60-64 year olds and 2+ high risk medical conditions. Rumors are that work will have on-site jabs in May, so might wait until then, unless there's an obvious surplus so I don't feel I'm taking it from someone more at risk.

Appointments Available > Schedule Your Vaccine > So Sorry, No Appointments Available in That Location = I see how this is going to go.

― soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 30 March 2021 14:57 (five years ago)
That should actually read:
Appointments Available > Schedule Your Vaccine > So Sorry, No Appointments Available in That Location > Update Availability > Appointments Available > etc. etc. etc.
― What's a vaccine? (PBKR), Tuesday, 30 March 2021 14:57 (five years ago)
I kept getting that too, but I ended up putting myself on the waitlist for a big vaccination center and heard back in a couple of days. So it's worth clicking on every location to see if they have a waitlist.
― Lily Dale, Tuesday, 30 March 2021 15:02 (five years ago)
It also seems like, at least around here, that the availability definitely comes in waves. As of today, it's back to what I was seeing in previous weeks, nada anywhere within a 2-hour drive of Chicago, but plenty downstate once again. Seemed like lots of luck towards the end of week, which may be when supplies get firmed up for the following week and appointments open up.

Fuck Rite Aid - you seriously have to search for availability store by store? JFC!
― What's a vaccine? (PBKR), Tuesday, 30 March 2021 15:15 (five years ago)
I'm pretty much convinced getmyvaccine.org is populated with pharmacies that don't actually exist, because whenever it says there is a vaccine nearby, the link takes me to the Rite Aid website and that store cannot be found. Not that they don't have availability - the store literally doesn't exist.
― What's a vaccine? (PBKR), Tuesday, 30 March 2021 15:23 (five years ago)
If you have the ability to take a day off and drive somewhere, you could try calling pharmacies upstate first thing in the morning and asking if they have cancellations.
― Lily Dale, Tuesday, 30 March 2021 15:27 (five years ago)
Lily fwiw I had almost no side effects from my second Pfizer dose, either. I got a little sleepy maybe 6 hours after it and took a nap, but I’m pregnant, so that’s not exactly a freak occurrence these days.
― horseshoe, Tuesday, 30 March 2021 15:28 (five years ago)
TX opened vaccines to the general public yesterday. Austin Public Health announced they'd be releasing 12,000 appointments in the evening. Then right before they released the appointments, they also announced that they were still only making them available to people in priority groups and that only 7,000 would be released instead, FFS.
― Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Tuesday, 30 March 2021 15:28 (five years ago)
There are some pharmacies in TX that have vaccines I could possibly sign up for, nearest is 180 miles away.
xp good to hear! I also got a little sleepy six hours later and took a nap, but I was recovering from a four-day migraine so that was also to be expected.
― Lily Dale, Tuesday, 30 March 2021 15:29 (five years ago)
Lily Dale, I have a friend who *helped another friend move house* the day after getting his second Pfizer shot, so you're not totally alone.
― it's like edging for your mind (the table is the table), Tuesday, 30 March 2021 15:33 (five years ago)
one issue brought up by Austin Public Health is that they still have 260,000 people in priority groups registered who haven't signed up for a vaccine. This number has been pretty much the same for the past month. They are now trying to figure out if these people got vaccinated some other way so they can be removed from the list.
― Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Tuesday, 30 March 2021 15:33 (five years ago)
Last update, because I'm fucking furious and done for a while: appointments at nearest state facility now being given for May fucking 22 and still not actually available. Might as well schedule me for 2525.
― What's a vaccine? (PBKR), Tuesday, 30 March 2021 15:42 (five years ago)
pbkr and others, i would really not bother with rite aid, the site was wonky for me the entire time i tried to nab an appointment. nearly all the stores were unavailable and the ones that were would freeze rather than let you take next steps.
cvs is more reliable–if they have appointments available, they'll tell you and if you can't find anything by searching the zip code, try searching by city name. that's how i got my appt.
