apologies if it is in poor taste to complain about this, but I am just so tired of people trying to tell me that I should bend the rules to say I qualify for the vaccine when I very clearly do not, and/or implying that I must not care about the virus if I'm not doing that

"didn't you have a lab once where your blood sugar was kinda close to the edge of the normal range? you should say you have diabetes!" like... no?
― like, Iโm eating an elephant head (katherine), Saturday, 27 March 2021 01:48 (five years ago)
I think that implying you don't care about the virus is definitely not cool. Why would cutting ahead of people with actual medical conditions show that you care more? These people sound kind of messed up.
― Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Saturday, 27 March 2021 03:23 (five years ago)
I do feel like people are getting peevish, which is funny because I also do feel like we're a month away from total vaccine free-for-all; today on FB one of my friends posted like 1000 words about how even though he's fat enough to be eligible he's waiting his turn until his age group gets called and that if vaccines are going unused, that's for systemic reasons and isn't justification for younger people to get vaccinated -- I don't really agree with him but I didn't post this to agree or disagree, just to register that he is clearly really MAD and presumably that's because other people in his life are getting mad at HIM for not getting vaccinated -- don't really know where I'm going with this, just registering that there's lots of "I'm cutting off my friendship with X because they got vaxxed too early" and "how dare you not get vaxxed when you clearly could," argh
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 27 March 2021 17:12 (five years ago)
I cannot for the life of me imagine getting mad at friends or family getting vaccinated at any point. I mean, they're my friends and family, I want them to be healthy and I want to be able to hang out with them safely.
But as for vaccine for all, tbf, a month away from first vaccine for all, right? So let's say that's the case. First shot let's say May 1. Second shot June 1, more or less predicted immunity mid-June. And that's if you get in on the first free-for-all wave. Vs first shot now, second shot May 1, immunity in time for the start of summer. Which doesn't seem much of a big deal/difference, but I do know a few folks for whom those differing time spans means the difference between attending a wedding or bar mitzvah or family reunion or staying home and missing it.

Weird. I've not come across a single instance of either but then I don't know how it's being organized in the US.

― Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Saturday, 27 March 2021 17:45 (five years ago)
There was always going to be a point where prioritization costs more time to herd immunity than it's worth, in terms of preventing the most illness and death. I'm definitely not qualified to determine whether we're at that point yet, but if we aren't, we can't be very far off.
I genuinely think most people (and *everyone* on this thread) have only the best of intentions in their vaccine decisions and I have no desire to pass judgment. I just hope people remember that wasted time toward herd immunity isn't free. It will cost death and suffering, especially now that the political will to take other steps to stop the spread is evaporating (my state just made local mask ordinances *illegal*, ffs). To my mind, it's more important, practically and ethically, to prevent wasted appointments and doses than it is to make sure that everyone who got a shot truly deserved it on that day.
― nicole, Saturday, 27 March 2021 17:46 (five years ago)
Agreed, there is no point in letting doses go to waste for any reason

what in the living fuck
who are these people?
My friends and I, most of whom have gotten jabbed in the last three weeks, are already planning a late April outdoor gathering with a couple of the younger holdouts -- and I doubt in Florida the vaccine won't have gotten to them by late April.

get it now if you can get it.
Uh. It's not like the USA is about to run out of vaccine. With the J&J version coming online in a big way there will be enough for everyone who wants it and quite soon, too. Even if you're closer to the tail end of the line than the beginning, you will still benefit from the increase in 'herd immunity' as millions more acquire personal immunity. Best to not get too twisted up over this.
― Judge Roi Behan (Aimless), Saturday, 27 March 2021 19:18 (five years ago)
"get it now if you can get it" is not "get it before it's gone"i mean that if you're agonizing because "it's not your turn," stop. any day that you're not vaccinated is a day with greater risk. get it now if you can get it.

― armoured van, Holden (sic), Saturday, 27 March 2021 20:23 (five years ago)
There is a line though inasmuch as people who are currently in prioritized groups in your area should go first where possible. If there aren't enough of those people anymore, and appointments are going unfilled, as happened here this week, then by all means get in.
― Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Saturday, 27 March 2021 20:54 (five years ago)
In other words, there is a moral question here of prioritizing people who need it most, but it is quickly becoming moot as those people are either getting vaccinated or opting out.
― Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Saturday, 27 March 2021 20:57 (five years ago)
getting the jab today, the nurse asked "so how do you qualify" as she was literally already pushing the plunger down on the needle in my arm.

Walgreens (in my state, at least) opens up new appointments just after 6AM every day. So today I camped the spawn and got my wife and I set up fairly easily. I checked back like 20 minutes later and all of them were gone.

Signed up for a no-waste list at Wal-mart recently and we got the call on Friday. Wife and I got our first shots!
― Cow_Art, Sunday, 28 March 2021 14:30 (five years ago)
also: yeah no one here where both my wife and I were vaxxed (via Curative, set up by the city of berkeley) asked for any proof of eligibility; we scoured the place looking for proof that my wife works for the school district (they were 100% useless in this regard; she works very part time for the adult school), found some tax records and a pay stub, but when we went they didn't want to see it. They dont want to handle anything more than necessary.
