or like....any dance sequence from xxl

Channing Tatum is a great actor because he's somehow convinced people he's attractive, despite in fact being incredibly bizarre looking. A definite graduate of the Lank Thompson Handsome Actor school.

Any number of sequences from either jump street but especially captains daughter moment

Guy looks like meathead but is a very deft, charming and adaptable comedica talent

Marry and Neghim (darraghmac), Tuesday, 23 March 2021 14:08 (three years ago) link

yeah it was Jump Street that showed me the light. he's genuinely funny! also, wrt The Bar: Tatum has played himself to memorable effect

rob, Tuesday, 23 March 2021 14:10 (three years ago) link

i would give Jump Street a chance but i rly don't want to watch another fucking Channing Tatum movie

davey, Tuesday, 23 March 2021 14:14 (three years ago) link

the best i can say about the performances i've seen from him is that he's "good-natured." but he is very short of acting style.

i saw Hail Caesar and i'm sorry but i thought he was as replaceable in that as everything else i've seen from him. dancing is his one trick.

he tried to be scary in Hateful Eight but ended up being funny.

further direct evidence: Jupiter Ascending

davey, Tuesday, 23 March 2021 14:20 (three years ago) link

but fair enough. i might give one of his comedies a chance on of these days

false

or at least, being a competent dancer doesn't make you a competent actor.

see: The Eagle

I flagged davey

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 23 March 2021 14:44 (three years ago) link

Jamie Bell, a dancer who can also act dramatically, was also in The Eagle and it's a bit sad that he played second fiddle

davey, Tuesday, 23 March 2021 14:48 (three years ago) link

Jupiter Ascending is a good movie and Channing Tatum is good in it

Include me in the "dancing is acting" camp.

avatar of a kind of respectability homosexual culture (Eric H.), Tuesday, 30 March 2021 16:43 (three years ago) link

There's dancing that isn't acting, but he does the acting type. Being a competent actor in Haywire, 21 Jump Street, Side Effects, Hateful 8, Hail Caesar, Logan Lucky and the non-dance sections of the Magics Mike also makes him a competent actor, though.

Quentin Tarantino

Bastard Lakes (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 30 March 2021 16:47 (three years ago) link

QT is unique in that he's one of the only actors QT can't direct into even an interesting-if-not-necessarily-good performance.

Perhaps we need a 'directors-as-actors - S&D' thread.

Thankfully we don't need a 'worst actor related to a director' thread as Ted Raimi has that one tied up nicely.

You Can't Have the Woogie Without a Little Boogie (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 30 March 2021 17:01 (three years ago) link

Tarantino's aight in The Man From Hollywood and good in Dogs.

Ted Raimi ruled in Xena.

armoured van, Holden (sic), Tuesday, 30 March 2021 17:03 (three years ago) link

(Django is probably the worst screen performance ever committed by any director, in their own or anyone else's film.)

I still nominate Jared Leto, he is all 111 of my nominations

Deez NFTs (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 10 May 2022 16:11 (two years ago) link

Earlier today I was considering the extremely controversial nomination of George Raft ('who?' - most ILXors itt) and discovered this choice Wilder quote on Wikipedia:

He was offered the lead in Double Indemnity (1944) by Billy Wilder but turned it down. "We knew then that we'd have a good picture", said Wilder later.
― Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, February 3, 2021 4:53 PM (one year ago) bookmarkflaglink

I've seen Raft in a number of films. And I'm bewildered that so many reputable directors offered him so many roles that were major hits for other actors. His dancing is supposed to be his strong point, but what I've seen is almost as wooden as his acting.

there was a Meisner class on the other side of the building where we were rehearsing/performing a show, and they were some of the smuggest dorks alive. their warmup exercises consisted of screaming and swearing.

Deez NFTs (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 10 May 2022 16:23 (two years ago) link

my director got annoyed with how it bled through the walls so he'd scream "FUCK SHIT COCK" back at them

Trying to identify "the worst" is, as we have seen in this thread, a real challenge.

However, identifying the actor with the least deserved reputation for greatness?

Long thread, on my phone, cannot ctrl-f, but the 3rd worst actor is Sam Neill

I disliked him in Jurassic Park, Dead Calm was playing on TV a lot around that time and I disliked him in it, and I’ve never seen anybody so utterly chops-humiliated as when he was cast opposite Isabelle Adjani (Possession) (tho tbf very few could’ve possibly risen to her level in that film)

I disliked Ed Harris until he became the MVP in Westworld

He was good in Event Horizon!

I liked Ed Harris until The Hours.

I thought Christian Bale won this thread handily?

Christian Bale sucked as Batman and sucked as a child actor but did Patrick Bateman so well it’s impossible to really dislike him

He does a lot of “super committed to physical transformation” roles which isn’t acting but gets points for the effort
