my possibly even hotter take is that middle aged wide sad man ben affleck is just a lot of fun to watch in almost anything

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Friday, 19 March 2021 16:52 (three years ago) link

Cavill as Superman is pretty unimpeachable, it's just a shame that the movies around him are what they are.

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 19 March 2021 16:53 (three years ago) link

Batfleck is... fine, for the older Bruce I suppose. But strong disagree on Cavill, I think he's absolutely terrible casting for Superman.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 19 March 2021 16:57 (three years ago) link

starting tonight i'm gonna watch man of steel -> bvs -> snyder's justice league

:D

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 19 March 2021 16:58 (three years ago) link

Cavill is perfect for Snyder's version of Superman, just not for the one most normal people actually like

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Friday, 19 March 2021 17:00 (three years ago) link

whose versions of Bruce Wayne do you like / use as a standard Brad?

armoured van, Holden (sic), Friday, 19 March 2021 17:00 (three years ago) link

I still hold Keaton as best Bruce Wayne.

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Friday, 19 March 2021 17:01 (three years ago) link

uh keaton's the only one who mattered to me before batfleck. keaton still unsurpassed in being both a covincing bruce wayne and not looking completely fucking ridiculous in a batsuit

but i love what affleck brings to the role, he exudes that overgrown poor little rich boy stuff

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 19 March 2021 17:02 (three years ago) link

oh i also really liked val kilmer as bruce but he's such a marginal focus in batman forever that it's harder for me to get a sense of the performance

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 19 March 2021 17:04 (three years ago) link

George Clooney was an average George Clooney in his Batman movie

Hello Nice FBI Lady (DJP), Friday, 19 March 2021 17:10 (three years ago) link

i actually think clooney is outrageously terrible in batman & robin, like there's barely a trace of the guy from out of sight or ocean's eleven in his performance

this is of course one of the things i find really fun about batman & robin

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 19 March 2021 17:11 (three years ago) link

uma thurman and arnold schwarzenegger are perfectly aware of the kind of movie they're in. clooney either seems so contemptuous of it that he's stopped trying, or he is so confused that he has no idea which tone to strike. maybe both

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 19 March 2021 17:12 (three years ago) link

Yes, hence "average Clooney" which I hoped would give the jokey inference of "terrible Batman"

Also, before his performance, I had no idea that I was so vehemently opposed to the idea of a smirking Bruce Wayne or rendered nipples on the Batsuit. I also submit that I never should have been placed in a position to form an opinion on whether the Batsuit should have nipples on it in the first place.

Hello Nice FBI Lady (DJP), Friday, 19 March 2021 17:14 (three years ago) link

lmao rip joel schumacher you absolute king

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 19 March 2021 17:15 (three years ago) link

the movie, as garbage as it is, is massively entertaining, and I 100% agree with your take on Thurman and Schwarzenegger; Thurman in particular almost singlehandedly saves the movie

Hello Nice FBI Lady (DJP), Friday, 19 March 2021 17:28 (three years ago) link

Clooney seems like a good choice for a movie that actually has some Bruce in it - that Oceans / OoS charisma would fit well with an Englehart-style guy who likes both his jobs and enjoys charming babes.,Haven’t seen the Schumachers, though, and I know Clooney says that he personally sucks in the role.

armoured van, Holden (sic), Friday, 19 March 2021 17:33 (three years ago) link

current DC casting is FUCKING BORING which is in keeping with their approach 100%

G.A.G.S. (Gophers Against Getting Stuffed) (forksclovetofu), Friday, 19 March 2021 17:51 (three years ago) link

I like Momoa and the dude who plays Flash. I'd probably like Cyborg if I remembered anything he did in the original cut of the movie.

Hello Nice FBI Lady (DJP), Friday, 19 March 2021 17:55 (three years ago) link

I feel like this tweet perfectly captures how I feel about Zack Snyder:

I’ve gone from hating Zack Snyder and watching his movies to respecting Zack as an artist and not watching his movies. It’s called growth.

silverfish, Friday, 19 March 2021 18:11 (three years ago) link

A different version of Cyborg played by a completely different guy is a great character in the Doom Patrol series.

chap, Friday, 19 March 2021 18:42 (three years ago) link

Yeah, I like that Cyborg a lot

Hello Nice FBI Lady (DJP), Friday, 19 March 2021 18:53 (three years ago) link

I watched another hour. There's some absolutely wild stuff in the Cyborg scenes.

and seriously gadot is like chrystal bell level wooden in this, it's almost swinging around to becoming an oddball virtue

ezra miller sucks a lot in this (not his fault I don't think, just gets stuck with horrible, horrible banter)

steppenwolf looks a bit like xavier renegade angel

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Saturday, 20 March 2021 05:59 (three years ago) link

FWIW I’ve seen it all now. Ezra Miller weirdly almost saves it by being an enthusiastic goof because otherwise when everything is epic, nothing is epic. All the Flash sequences in general were lovely, really — the way he’s realized just feels right in a way that inspired some awe beyond ‘he run really fast.’ That said, Cyborg is the real throughline character now and it’s pretty clear why Ray Fisher has been as pissed off as he has been on multiple levels now with the earlier version and everything else to boot.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 20 March 2021 06:43 (three years ago) link

i'm around a half hour in

superman's dying scream travels around the world
when the scream hits magic boxes they start to hum
the box in wonder woman's homeland is guarded by a fortress full of scantily clad soldiers
the box stops humming then starts again
some aliens teleport into the temple, say that "defenders always fail", and fight the soldiers
the queen hookshots the box into her hands
a soldier says the queen must "seal the cage". the queen orders the exit to be sealed off while she is in it, barely making it under the last door while guards holding it up get crushed
the temple falls off a cliff
the aliens from inside the temple fly out of it and attack the queen and more soldiers
the lead alien takes the box and teleports away
what am i watching

wasdnuos (abanana), Saturday, 20 March 2021 08:17 (three years ago) link

Wait, the Mother Boxes hum?!

You're fired, Snyder. Pack yr shit.

all right, it begins, i'm twenty minutes into man of steel. the hard sci-fi-ass krypton prologue was fuckin good

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Saturday, 20 March 2021 22:42 (three years ago) link

It is! I seriously love that whole part.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 20 March 2021 23:08 (three years ago) link

That was really the only part of the movie liked. It was a good alternative to the opening of Reeve's Superman, that 20 mins

"Salvation Army FUCK!" (Neanderthal), Saturday, 20 March 2021 23:10 (three years ago) link

i really liked the whole movie!!!! the heavy metal-esque kryptonian designs were definitely the high-point

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Sunday, 21 March 2021 01:28 (three years ago) link

also henry cavill.................. is very hot

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Sunday, 21 March 2021 01:29 (three years ago) link

after the prologue my favorite part of the movie was the dream sequence/hallucination where zod dumps a ton of exposition and kansas gradually turns into a field of skulls. think that scene alone explains why i like zack snyder

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Sunday, 21 March 2021 01:33 (three years ago) link

oh and the fortress of solitude with the morphing silver recreations of kryptonian history? amazing visual

i also love the opening of bats vs. supes, think it is very beautiful, down to young bruce levitating in a vortex of bats. my favorite live-action depiction of batman's origins

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Sunday, 21 March 2021 01:51 (three years ago) link

henry cavill is super hot but i find he’s hotter in everything BUT this superman stuff. it’s like Snyder deadens his hottness somehow >:(

I might have missed this chat earlier on, but did they add any more weird Kirby shit? My enjoyment of these movies now rests on how much weird Kirby shit they’re allowed to work in

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Sunday, 21 March 2021 05:35 (three years ago) link

we discussed that Snyder appears to not be trying, let alone allowed, to work weird Kirby shit in despite using the names of Kirby shit

armoured van, Holden (sic), Sunday, 21 March 2021 05:44 (three years ago) link

The intro to Man of Steel is very funny for the image of Crowe insisting that he'll take the Marlon Brando role but only if he gets to punch stuff - his perfect role of a Zapp Brannigan live action movie must be getting closer.

But of course none of it is meant to be funny.

Andrew Farrell, Sunday, 21 March 2021 08:16 (three years ago) link

Notably Kirby gets a standalone creators credit at the end for the Fourth World specifically. (I say standalone because the other creator credits, Finger/Kane for Batman etc, are bunched together, so why Kirby's was on its own, who knows.)

And even though I'm not a Snyder fan-as-such, fully agreed with Brad here that these plus the opening sequence as mentioned are the best parts of this one.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 21 March 2021 15:55 (three years ago) link

But of course none of it is meant to be funny.

Snyder's humorlessness is an asset for the most part tbh, it means there's a minimum of insufferable self-aware quippy banter (at least until the flash shows up, sigh) and provides weird moments that are genuinely hilarious regardless of intention

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Sunday, 21 March 2021 15:57 (three years ago) link

with more distance i'm ready to call man of steel a fuckin good superhero movie
