I don't know if this advice helps, but when I got my first Moderna shot, my arm got really sore after several hours, so taking my doctor's advice, I took some Tylenol (the 8 hour relief one - two pills per dose). Very, very mild soreness after that, I wonder if it helped prevent any other symptoms as well. Regardless, took a second dose like 10 hours later after the first one was wearing off, and then once more 12 hours later just to be soreness-free. FYI, I was told Tylenol is preferable to Advil as there isn't the risk of curbing your immune system's response to a vaccine (and as always take it well after a shot, definitely not before).

I originally read that you took a second vaccine and then a third all in the same day - jeez leave some for the rest of us.

Second day after second vax is much better, still ailing a bit but i can hold a thought in my brain and lie down without feeling bruised.

This is tangential to thread topic but endlessly fascinating

At the risk of tempting fate in a “man these edibles ain’t shit” way, I will say that yyit’s been 8 hours since I had my first AstraZeneca dose and I feel fine, my arm is barely even sore. I am starting to get that weird skin sensitivity that sometimes comes with a cold or flu, I might take a couple of paracetamol to head off any effects before bed but so far it’s not at all as bad as everyone’s been telling me (when I said I’d got the AZ my friend said “oh the puke-maker!”)

jammy mcnullity (wins), Saturday, 13 March 2021 20:04 (five years ago)

Can a mod delete that post

jammy mcnullity (wins), Saturday, 13 March 2021 20:11 (five years ago)

damn, did a lot change in 7 minutes?!

Red Nerussi (Neanderthal), Saturday, 13 March 2021 20:11 (five years ago)

It was starting to happen as I typed (skin sensitivity a tell) - almost as soon as I posted my arm to hurt. Not the ache/stiffness I get w flu jab but a sharp throbbing pain about once a second. That passed and now I feel sick. Very achy and lethargic, it’s kind of interesting - like instant flu! The effect really is a bit like coming up on bad recreational drugs, I’m gonna take a couple of paracetamol and ride it out. I’m glad it’s doing its thing

jammy mcnullity (wins), Saturday, 13 March 2021 20:19 (five years ago)

My arm *started* to hurt

jammy mcnullity (wins), Saturday, 13 March 2021 20:19 (five years ago)

Wins, I totally sympathize with you and am sorry you are hurting. But there's an argument to be made that it'll be more interesting if mods do not delete your initial post, because of the beginning "At the risk of tempting fate in a 'man these edibles ain’t shit' way."

Not that any of us should be entertained or amused by your suffering, of course. But it is kind of a textbook “man these edibles ain’t shit” moment, isn't it?

I speak as someone who has definitely had At the risk of tempting fate in a “man these edibles ain’t shit” moments.

FWIW, I'm finding recovery is brisk; I expect to go out tomorrow. But man the first day after the Moderna was headspinningly unpleasant! I would make sure you are not needed for two days after your shot.

G.A.G.S. (Gophers Against Getting Stuffed) (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 13 March 2021 20:42 (five years ago)

(second shot btw. first had no real effect on me beyond a sore arm)

G.A.G.S. (Gophers Against Getting Stuffed) (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 13 March 2021 20:43 (five years ago)

Oh I was joking about deleting, that was just my way of saying “lol @ me”

jammy mcnullity (wins), Saturday, 13 March 2021 20:45 (five years ago)

I feel like I've missed something today - the "second dose is awful" message seems particularly pronounced, in a seemingly not apolitical way (I'm meaning generally, rather than in this conversation).

armoured van, Holden (sic), Saturday, 13 March 2021 21:09 (five years ago)

I'm now three days out from my first AZ dose, and didn't have bad symptoms at all. Sore arm, and felt a bit tired and run down, but no nausea or anything serious (which was good because it was so short notice that I hadn't had time to book off work). Expecting a lot worse for the second dose, but that'll be June and the world will be different then, so maybe I don't mind so much.

colette, Sunday, 14 March 2021 09:29 (five years ago)

I had a horrendous 12 hours: full-body convulsions, killer headache, hot & sore all over. Dozed a bit and woke up at 4am drenched in sweat. I feel much better now, just slightly queasy and still have a headache. I’m sort of hoping dose 2 isn’t quite as bad if you have a strong reaction to 1 - obv there isn’t as much anecdata floating around for the Oxford one yet because of our dosing regime

jammy mcnullity (wins), Sunday, 14 March 2021 09:39 (five years ago)

So I now know multiple people who have gotten vaccinations by signing up through Walgreens, ignoring the 1B restrictions and just showing up. It's very tempting, gotta say, but I'll wait a few more weeks until 1C officially kicks in, because the guidelines in my state are so loose as to be non-existent (BMI over 25, etc).

three days past the second dose i am at 85% and rising. nastiness of it passes quick and even the soreness in my arm is fading fast. Crazy neck pain and joint achiness all day yesterday is dampening. If it happens to you, don't panic!

We have a couple of good friends who I think have gone vaccine mad. That is, they're both fully vaccinated and now are going crazy. Last week my daughter told me their daughter (not vaccinated, and also cautious) was annoyed that her fully vaccinated parents kept dragging them out to places, and now last night we learned from the friends themselves that they booked a last minute trip to Belize without the kids. For the record, the kids are 16 and 14, and probably wouldn't have wanted to right now even if they could. But now they will be left home alone for a week, because their apparently overconfident, definitely impatient parents are jetting down to Central America to hang on a resort. I get that people are pent up, but ... can't you wait just a little longer? There are still so many things that can go screwy that leaving your kids alone while you leave the country for an all-inclusive seems ... well, yeah, crazy.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 14 March 2021 21:40 (five years ago)

That's what I'll do: book a trip to Belize when my second jab hits in early April.

Roaring Twenties 2.0 here I come...if I ever get my shot(s).

Georgetown University Hospital sent me an email inviting me to make a vaccination appointment. I clicked through on the link, only to discover that 1) I need to set up an account to make that appointment, and 2) to set up that account I need a certain code...which was NOT included in the GUH email. I'm in no rush to defend the DC government's vaccination rollout, but nongovernmental entities are not exactly rising to the occasion.

is this where I ask whether there have been any documented transmissions from people not taking their shoes off/putting on hazmat boots when they walk into a friend's house? I'm concerned that a friend of mine might be going off the deep end of paranoia.

it's been a year, man

she has an auto-immune disorder so she is super paranoid

I like signing up to dead sites (sleeve), Monday, 15 March 2021 00:03 (five years ago)

doesnt make much sense to me, but tbf we're still taking certain precautions for extremely low likelihood transmission scenarios. even if its probably unnecessary, if all it costs is a little bit of extra time/slight hassle we figure whats the harm. peace of mind has been hard enough to come by over the past year, when its all over i wont be able to fault too many people for going overboard

nobody like my rap (One Eye Open), Monday, 15 March 2021 00:16 (five years ago)

i don't think there's been a documented case of anybody who caught COVID from a surface. not that it would be easy to determine, considering we don't know where the majority of people got their COVID, but afaict majority of transmission is human to human.

Red Nerussi (Neanderthal), Monday, 15 March 2021 00:18 (five years ago)

fomite paranoia was a lockdown thing, no evidence of transmission through groceries and stuf

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 15 March 2021 00:20 (five years ago)

well it's also cos originally the WHO/CDC seemed to think that was the main way it spread, and that it wasn't airborne.

Red Nerussi (Neanderthal), Monday, 15 March 2021 00:26 (five years ago)

I remember a really horrifying picture from China, early on, of workers in hazmat suits spraying entire streets with disinfectant. I can see how that would create some fears that are hard to shake.

Lily Dale, Monday, 15 March 2021 00:32 (five years ago)

the first time I moved in with my folks (temporarily), I wore a mask inside the house despite the fact that I only ever left it to go shopping. I kept using wipes on anything I touched, would run into the bathroom and scrub my hands for 20 seconds if I accidentally touched my mask.

I had people chastising me for opening my Amazon packages the day they came in. definitely was a different climate a year ago.

Red Nerussi (Neanderthal), Monday, 15 March 2021 00:42 (five years ago)

This really struck me when I made hamantaschen for Purim this year with my housemates. Last year it was a source of major stress: my housemate's mom sent her some in the mail; was that safe? Was it safe if my housemate put all the cookies on a plate with her bare hands, when we were being told under no circumstances to share food? This year it was just a normal day of making cookies.

Lily Dale, Monday, 15 March 2021 00:53 (five years ago)

I know people who have gone through wild swings of reaction over the past year. One friend who was so concerned that she went and quarantined herself from her family for a month, but then later got relaxed about it and starting going out way more than I have been. And then got COVID. And now seems fine, tho it was a recent case. Even those of us who talk about following the science have been pretty variable in what we decide is ok. I've tried hard not to be judgmental about other people's actions as long as they weren't being assholes. Unfortunately lots of people decided it was a great time to be assholes.

I was talking to a guy I know who owns a few restaurants about the whole past year, which of course has been super up and down for him. But the thing that he got most animated about was the anti-maskers. Just having to fight with assholes night after night after night.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Monday, 15 March 2021 04:37 (five years ago)

is this where I ask whether there have been any documented transmissions from people not taking their shoes off/putting on hazmat boots when they walk into a friend's house?

i can't answer that, but according to the CDC "Currently, no cases of COVID-19 have been identified where infection was thought to have occurred by touching food, food packaging, or shopping bags." so it seems very unlikely.

it's an airborne disease. your friend should consider not letting people in their house if they're at risk. given that for whatever reason they're letting people visit, having them wear booties on likely confers no additional protection.
