I keep seeing more and more rumors that Illinois is going to forget the idea of Phase 1c and just open it up to everyone else (Phase 1c and Phase 2) in the near future. While undoubtedly opening it up for more people to be eligible is a good thing, I'm wondering if suddenly tripling (or more, depending on which stats you look at) the number of people angling for the same number of appointments is going to make things a lot more challenging in the short term. Doesn't seem like that's the best way to instill confidence in a system that still hasn't worked out the kinks.

arm soreness from the moderna vaccine has been like a really intense version of flu shot for me. i can't drum! which is fine

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 11 March 2021 17:02 (five years ago)

Someone told me that if you pump your arm like you're doing bicep curls for the whole time you're sitting in the observation area, it helps, so I did. I had some soreness for a couple of days but nothing major. Purely anecdotal of course, and I have nothing to compare it to.

Lily Dale, Thursday, 11 March 2021 17:16 (five years ago)

self xpost - although, in reading more recent articles, it sounds like maybe Illinois is backing away from combining Phases 1c and Phase 2. Per the latest, it looks like Phase 2 won't even begin until June:

Arwady has said Phase 1C would likely begin March 29 and Phase 2, which includes all residents over the age of 16, could begin May 31.

Real toughies do bicep curls *while* they're getting the shot. "Oh, you think you're so good!? You think you've got a steady hand!? Well, try jabbing this, assuming you can even get that pitiful little needle into my massive deltoid!"

Shot-givers appreciate that sort of challenge, gets the adrenaline flowing and makes them feel like superheroes.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 11 March 2021 17:44 (five years ago)

Accidentally left off the last part of my previous post, which was to say that seeing Illinois is currently planning to open up Phase 2 on May 31st explains why I bristle at caek's repeated insistence that everyone who wants it will be vaccinated by the end of May.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 11 March 2021 17:55 (five years ago)

jvc has fully convinced me that the rollout in Illinois is extremely badly run relative to the way it's going where I am!

i had a nurse once remark to herself, when i rolled up my sleeve for a vaccine shot, "oh good, theres hardly any muscle there, this should be really easy." i was like jeez ma'am, I got a lot of other good qualities, gimme a break already.

nobody like my rap (One Eye Open), Thursday, 11 March 2021 18:25 (five years ago)

I had to get a lung x-ray to get cleared to work in France, and the doctor who looked at the x-ray said, "Oh, not athletic, huh?" and didn't elaborate. I've wondered about that ever since.

Lily Dale, Thursday, 11 March 2021 18:27 (five years ago)

Bear in mind that Illinois is not free to speculate about vaccine ability to the public in the same way people on Twitter or even the President can. They're making estimates based on the logistics of their operation at this time, and the amount of vaccine they've been receiving. They probably know the amount of available vaccine is going to rise rapidly, but they'd be very bad public agencies if they made promises based on that assumption at this time. People on Twitter are free to look at the wider picture and make those claims. And nobody is wrong! They just have different constraints on what they're allowed to consider when making predictions.

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 11 March 2021 18:30 (five years ago)

went to my office today for first time in a year (to the day) to get a new ID badge - started to have a mild creeping panic when the four security guards checking IDs at the front desk were all maskless. panic escalated when the dude in the HR office issuing new badges was also just fully maskless, handing out badges to a long line of people, shooting the breeze, everyone having a great time. when i asked him to mask up he was surprised and said "oh, its over there at my other desk" and did the thing where he held expectant eye contact with me, waiting for me to go "oh thats ok then, dont get up". found a way to calmly tell him yes please if he wouldnt mind putting a mask on that would be really great, thanks so much for accommodating me. told my boss i was taking the rest of the day off and got the fuck out of there to go lay down in a dark room and calm down for a while. we are a full year into the pandemic.

nobody like my rap (One Eye Open), Thursday, 11 March 2021 18:49 (five years ago)

what state?

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 11 March 2021 18:55 (five years ago)

Jesus! I'm so sorry that was your experience, that sounds extremely stressful. I don't know what to say, I'm shocked that so many people in the process would still be so careless at this point in the pandemic.

f. hazel - Absolutely, you are correct, I wouldn't want to see incorrect over promising either. At the same time, all those of us waiting can do is keep up to date with the latest timeline presented by our officials and wait. It just adds an additional layer of annoyance when it contradicts the national timeline.

Alfred, even if you are incorrect, I'd rather the dough go for your favorite libation.

I thought I had a rough idea of all the ways that human beings could be fucking ridiculous but this past year has definitely presented a new one to me.

I'm definitely filing away all of the 'masks, lol' people for a lifetime of side-eye from yrs truly.

nobody like my rap (One Eye Open), Thursday, 11 March 2021 19:07 (five years ago)

that's terrible, OEO, any way to let your co. know this is still happening (and isn't acceptable)?

in MN, in my fifties with no risks, just got an email from my health care provider saying I can make a vaccination appointment.

by the light of the burning Citroën, Thursday, 11 March 2021 19:07 (five years ago)

I bristle at caek's repeated insistence that everyone who wants it will be vaccinated by the end of May.

i haven't repeatedly insisted this, and you said yesterday you were going to stop posting about this stuff.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Thursday, 11 March 2021 19:20 (five years ago)

You absolutely were insisting that the other day.

I'm glad I have you policing my content though, thanks for that. Can you let me know which thread for posting irrational fears about Covid I'm allowed to post my (mostly) irrational fears about Covid in, if not the one specifically dedicated to posting about irrational fears about Covid? I'm not sure why you have such an axe to grind towards me personally, but go off. You win.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 11 March 2021 19:37 (five years ago)

i've long ago given up on trying to help you get some perspective yourself, but i do repeatedly try to talk you down because this is a public health issue and i don't want other people to think things that aren't true.

you're not posting like someone who thinks they're being irrational. go back and read your posts. last month you had "written off" 2021 (!), and two days ago (!) you expected to wait "26 weeks" to get your shot (!)

but if your point is that you know you're being irrational, and that this is the irrational thread then, well, fair enough! you are and it is.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Thursday, 11 March 2021 20:20 (five years ago)

I won't argue with previous posts, absolutely my fears and anxiety have gotten the better of me in the past.

But what I posted today was a direct quote from a local official, giving their anticipated timeline. Just because you find that timeline unlikely to hold, that doesn't mean me sharing it saying things that "aren't true".

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 11 March 2021 20:50 (five years ago)

Lots of other people in this thread and others have posted fears and anxieties that may not be universal and/or relatable, but you seem to only consistently pile on me for mine. It feels very personal and targeted.

Full Novavax vaccine efficacy data out, if you haven’t seen it:

Very effective vs “classic” SARS-CoV-2 (96%) and UK B1.1.7 strain.

55% effective vs SA B1.351 strain, but 100% vs death/hospitalization

AND they say these data will suffice for EUA! https://t.co/3xxDs725FF

What would be the effect of stacking vaccines? Say getting the two rounds of Pfizer plus the J&J within a few weeks or months of each other. Would there be high potential for serious harm? Would you become super immune?

Je55e, Friday, 12 March 2021 11:54 (five years ago)

NB I am not seriously considering doing this, but I can’t be the only person thinking about it. And toward the end of the year when supply and distribution are in good shape, it would become feasible. I’m expecting articles about this phenomenon by July.

I did read somewhere that the UK is looking into whether there's increased effectiveness when they mix up the first and second dose providers (so here it would be AZ for one and Pfizer for the other), but haven't seen any results.
