RIP

I had no idea he was still around.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 23 February 2021 18:52 (five years ago)

He was indeed, and still involved with City Lights. When there was a fundraiser last year after lockdown kicked in, the folks in charge of the day to day would include occasional comments and messages from him, lived right nearby.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 23 February 2021 18:53 (five years ago)

RIP, person who.

Gary snyder still with us iirc

Didn’t know that, despite sometimes receiving quotes from him on the WeCroak app.

lolllllll

The Ballad of Mel Cooley (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 23 February 2021 21:31 (five years ago)

Certainly one of the last of the big names of the Beat era, some of the "smaller" or younger generation are still around...but with Bill Berkson, Diane DiPrima, Ferlinghetti, and Kyger all passing in such a short period of time, it certainly seems like that generation is leaving us.

Don't get me wrong— I've used ATVs while working in rural areas, and think that dune buggies have a similar place, but as recreational vehicles, they're absolute shit. Get that loud, destructive shit out of the wilderness, please.

Longtime Armenian singer/ instrumentalist and occasional Hollywood actor Guy Chookoorian has died. He , like many of the Armenians who fled their homes after Turkish genocide, and their descendants ended up in Southern California,

curmudgeon, Thursday, 25 February 2021 15:09 (five years ago)

Huh, looks like he actually died a couple of weeks ago. Born in Kenosha, WI, a true midwestern Armenian-American success story.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 25 February 2021 15:16 (five years ago)

Was 97. Chookoorian and family moved from Wisconsin to California while he was in elementary school

lol I missed that ghostly rovers return. He is so Mike Baldwin I thought he really had died.

calzino, Sunday, 28 February 2021 11:09 (five years ago)

he could be very funny sometimes. Like I remember when Ken Barlow was doing a market stall he quipped "ken, you are supposed to work your way up from being a barrow boy".

I am shaken. I was only speaking to Angel Moraes a few weeks back. Stunned to hear that he has passed away. Rest In Peace brother 😢

Jazz drummer Ralph Peterson Jr., who had been battling cancer for six years. I've heard him on countless records, but only saw him live once, in January 2020, subbing for Billy Hart with the Cookers. It sounded like an avalanche. He was very much of the Art Blakey/Elvin Jones school of jazz drumming; if you were the bassist who had to stand next to him, you might as well just mime your part, because no one was going to hear you.

but also fuck you (unperson), Monday, 1 March 2021 16:20 (five years ago)

aw unperson you've surely forgotten more jazz than i'll ever know but that feels a little unfair to Elvin Jones ime

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Monday, 1 March 2021 18:32 (five years ago)

When I saw Elvin Jones his bass player was this guy, draw your own conclusions.
