I'll bet there's some serious BO in that control room. It's Miller time.

More like BAwesome.
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 18 February 2021 21:02 (five years ago)
Greatness indeed. Always lovely to see it happen. Can't wait to see if/when the little drone thing or helicopter deploys.

I got sad that these nerds can't jump up and down and hug each other =|

About to start!
I’ve come nearly 300 million miles, and I’m just getting started. Hear from the team about my picture-perfect landing and what comes next.LIVE at 2:30 p.m. PST (5:30 p.m. EST/20:30 UTC) https://t.co/fciqGe8GpC pic.twitter.com/5XgclFaGtB— NASA's Perseverance Mars Rover (@NASAPersevere) February 18, 2021

Okay the NASA dude at the press conference with the amazing voice tearing up the now unneeded contingency plan and tossing the scraps away is massively hilarious in the best way.
― Ned Raggett, Thursday, 18 February 2021 23:06 (five years ago)
I know this stuff costs a shit-ton of money, but when it all goes to plan... it's pretty awesome.

I'm unreasonably happy that this is taking place during a new presidential administration

Stop everything for 26 seconds and watch this.Footage, with sound (!) from the surface of another planet.Just incredible. pic.twitter.com/sEjKcuOJeZ— James Holland (@James7Holland) February 19, 2021

It's only a matter of time before some jokers start adding goofy shit, so enjoy.
Actually, might be fake/old. Ugh, who can even tell, might be Texas.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 19 February 2021 19:26 (five years ago)
that's the curiosity rover
― global tetrahedron, Friday, 19 February 2021 20:05 (five years ago)
Even as 'old' video from an earlier rover, it is interesting to hear what seems to be martian wind, as well as see the landscape in such sharp detail.
― Compromise isn't a principle, it's a method (Aimless), Friday, 19 February 2021 21:30 (five years ago)
This is a cool story. I wonder when they’re going to fire up the mic/share any recordings.
― DJI, Friday, 19 February 2021 21:34 (five years ago)
It's real video from Curiosity but fake sound, apparently.
― soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 19 February 2021 21:38 (five years ago)
yeah, see here:
Turns out this is old footage from the Curiosity rover and the sound has been patched in. Should practice more of what I preach to students about fact checking and critical thinking before retweeting. Still a cool video though! https://t.co/jq4g05wnO6— Jerome Marshall (@MarshallJerome) February 20, 2021

still incredible shot, but....i'd like to wait and see what the Perseverance records!
one of my friends posted al ink to this video and said "now watch all the conspiracists say this is fake"
― if you meh them, shut up (Neanderthal), Saturday, 20 February 2021 02:36 (five years ago)
What if I told you… the Earth blew up eons ago and we already are on Mars?
― pomenitul, Saturday, 20 February 2021 02:37 (five years ago)
Microphones on the probe recorded atmospheric wind noises in an effort to measure wind speed (they also recorded noises associated with the probe's equipment).[5] This was the first recording of sound on another planet. The recording would be repeated with Venera 14.

PHEW, that descent video.
― Ned Raggett, Monday, 22 February 2021 19:16 (five years ago)
great stuff - even though the audio is more of a gimmick imo, it'll sound like wind, won't it?
― StanM, Monday, 22 February 2021 19:54 (five years ago)
Even so!
― Ned Raggett, Monday, 22 February 2021 19:57 (five years ago)
even if the microphone just confirms predicted sound patterns, that confirmation is worth something

https://lightsinthedark.com/2021/07/23/insight-measures-the-size-of-mars-core/
well this has blown my mind. I thought the reason the reason the atmosphere of Mars was stripped away by solar winds was most likely because the core cooled down and stopped generating a magnetic field.
