SF is woefully behind other CA cities in getting the vaccine out to people. there has been no mass vaccination site open here like Petco Park in San Diego or Dodger Stadium in LA
― π ππ’π¨ (caek), Sunday, 7 February 2021 02:59 (five years ago)
most of my relatives 65+ in San Diego and LA have been vaccinated through these sites, as well as in grocery store pharmacies. There is nothing like that in San Francisco. I don't have any older friends in SF who have been able to get an appointment anywhere
hoping opportunities will open up soon though
― Dan S, Sunday, 7 February 2021 03:28 (five years ago)
I guess the population over 65 is higher in San Diego - newly wed and nearly dead
― Dan S, Sunday, 7 February 2021 03:39 (five years ago)
my 65+ parents in LA haven't been able to get vaccinated, fwiw
― lukas, Sunday, 7 February 2021 03:40 (five years ago)
The is extreme inequity in vaccine delivery and acceptance across the 10m people in LA county. I assume this problem is less bad in SF if only because itβs smaller and more demographically homogenous.Without making any assumptions about the kind of people you know in LA, you might be seeing the fact that LA is doing much better (perhaps even better than SF, but I donβt think thatβs anything tk brag about) at vaccinating relatively rich white people than poor Latinos.Fwiw dodger stadium is managed by carbon health on behalf of the city. The la county sites are responsible for more of LAβs vaccinations but the sites are less photogenic (and the recipients at those sites less tv news friendly, ie less white).Who knows. Maybe SF is blowing it. But donβt get distracted by dodger stadium.

Lukas if youβre down to help your folks (or your folks are on Twitter) then https://mobile.twitter.com/ReporterClaudia is acting as a clearing house for news about appointment availability in LA.

recently discovered the myturn.ca.gov website, I like it
― Dan S, Sunday, 7 February 2021 04:09 (five years ago)
it's not the source of truth for local availability so the information is out of date. it says there are no appointments when there are, and it says there are appointments when they're aren't.
― π ππ’π¨ (caek), Sunday, 7 February 2021 04:25 (five years ago)
thanks caek!
― lukas, Sunday, 7 February 2021 04:53 (five years ago)
it just burns me that people should have to go through so much anguish and fight just to get an appointment that will be cancelled later
― Dan S, Sunday, 7 February 2021 05:01 (five years ago)
FWIW, latest SF-specific numbers here, counting through yesterday:
https://data.sfgov.org/stories/s/COVID-19-Vaccinations/a49y-jeyc
One-dose: 91,307, 12% of eligible populationSecond-dose: just under 25K, 3%
Numbers currently at/approaching high 3K/4K a day -- so room for growth, certainly, but it is happening nonetheless.

I just checked and there are only 3 available appointments available at Moscone this week if you are 65+ or a Frontline healthcare employee.
― Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 8 February 2021 19:56 (five years ago)
apparently a whole raft of appointments turned up mid-day yesterday for the Moscone Center on myturn.ca.gov
a few of my friends got appointments. glad to see it's opening up. I wonder if Sunday is the day to check

Here in SF, my elderly neighbor who literally lived through the Nanking Massacre insisted on waiting for his healthcare provider to contact him rather than sign up. Phhhhh...

heh the Venue Recovery Fund has really interesting timing in that Congress created the Shuttered Venue Operator Grant fund through SBA (there are basic guidelines but the application and documentation requirements are still in process) ... like, I am guessing that SF is planning on getting federal dollars rather than being selflessly generous and forward thinking. Like, if they had done something like this back in July, I would have been impressed, but doing it now? ... eh it's something

Awww, that's a bummer... he complimented one of my selections at the register on time, and I walked out in a glow.
But 101 is hardly a tragedy; and the store has somehow survived.

That is sad, he did seem like he'd be around forever. Was really happy to have been able to visit City Lights when we were in San Francisco a few years ago, sadly I didn't see him in the shop that particular day.

he liked working there, but he quit because he had to move out of his rent controlled apartment in SF, so he moved to Oakland, and the commute to North Beath in terms of time and public transit wasn't worth it. ... plus before he'd worked at City Lights, he worked at Adobe, and I think he was over being the bookstore guy.

I still have (somewhere) a copy of issue #1 of Search & Destroy (June 1977) which used City Lights as their mailing address.

― sarahell, Tuesday, 23 February 2021 19:59 (five years ago)
Search and Destroy was founded and published by V. Vale in 1977 while working at City Lights Bookstore. Vale received initial donations from Allen Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti to finance this zine that he hoped would be a clone of Andy Warhol's Interview. Mixing interviews, articles and photos, Search and Destroy presented well-written pieces documenting punk and new wave music and their accompanying aesthetic.Featuring a review of a punk show in San Francisco at the 'Gabba-Hey Gardens;' an interview with the band Crime, a collage centerfold of various punk/new wave bands; 'The Politics of Punk' by Nico Ordway and a short piece by Allen Ginsberg on New Wave.
― Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 23 February 2021 20:02 (five years ago)

City Lights is, tbph, not that good a bookstore, but I'm still glad it's there.
I will honestly say, though, that if I could have guaranteed Modern Times' survival at the Valencia Street location for twenty more years, I would have been fine with City Lights shutting down. And I'm a poet! Modern Times was just a better store.
(For one, City Lights doesn't carry used books, which means that a majority of the stuff they have just isn't worth looking at imho)
