Rainn Wilson surely worse than Hader in the same category

I wouldn't hire him to convince me of anything, but Rainn Wilson does fine portraying a caricature of a tall asocial weirdo in 6FU, Office, Galaxy Quest, Super. The bar is Bloom.

hader was great in adventureland (slightly more than a bit part though)
i liked him in skeleton twins
he was good in forgetting sarah marshall
people say barry is great but i haven't seen it

It never occurred to me to wonder whether Orlando Bloom could act or not.

He can act close enough to an elf in those movies, probably as good as we'll get.

considering elves aren't actually real

tbh last time i watched lotr i thought bloom was not terrible, but i was making a conscious effort to appreciate him, because having been 13-15 when the movies came out and in close association w women of a similar age i could not properly perceive his performance thru an interposed skein of sexual jealousy. (also i was busy crushing on viggo.) as a mature and confident adult this is v slightly less of an issue and i am better able to enjoy his, idk, springiness; but admittedly the gifs itt have been so brutal that next time i act in anything including possibly real life i expect to hear my brain telling me i just look like that, only less springy.

(increasingly think "no good gifs" is the worst thing you can say about an actor-- no doubt this privileges the momentary decontextualized effect over the broader structure of a performance but otoh it's not like you can have one without the other)

I will again respond that dreyfuss's gleeful, furious, amused, frustrated laugh to the mayor under the billboard in jaws would render him utterly unallowable

American Graffiti, Duddy Kravitz, Jaws, and Close Encounters--surely not even close.

He's the absolute worst thing about three of those excellent movies (haven't seen American Graffiti) and his 80s/90s run was an explicably rising star (with increasingly "America's Sweetheart" smarm) coupled with film-destroying performances, I might even argue that Always would've been watchable with another lead

I would see anything with Bloom in it before I'd see Dreyfuss again

Bloom's job is to be Lisa Simpson's fantasy man
Ryan Philippe's job is to act as a stand-in for the emptiness of the attractive American male
Richard Dreyfuss's job is apparently to destroy fifteen years of American cinema

Wow--couldn't disagree more. (Surprised you still consider them excellent, Dreyfuss commands so much screen time--there's hardly a scene in Duddy Kravitz without him.)

Dreyfuss is probably fine in Graffiti, definitely good in Jaws, and I'd watch What About Bob? with an audience to see if it holds up. If we start weighing his perfs on a scale though, fgti might be able to tip it. I've no idea what Bloomps has done outside a Crowe I haven't seen, some (?) of the Pirates, and taking that elephant thing down hardcore, damn, but it can't be all that much in quantity.

Plenty of human beings as bad as Wiseau at acting who, like Wiseau, are not professional actors.

If Dreyfuss has been terrible in 103 films and Bloom has only been profoundly inept in seven, I can see a case for it

maybe a weekly "What About Dick?" podcast where flambo watches and talks through a different Dreyfuss fillum with a guest and/or a steady-handed producer could help us assess
