Has anyone mentioned Mick Jagger ("Performance" excepted)?

SQUIRREL MEAT!! (Capitaine Jay Vee), Thursday, 4 February 2021 07:28 (five years ago)

yes, several times

Rachel McAdams is terrible in everything I've seen with her.
+1 on Chris Pratt.
Paula "Dopey Grin" Patton

Rachel McAdams has no business being mentioned here. This is the bar!

just giggled out loud at that last Bloom gif, dude really is hopeless

Roz, Thursday, 4 February 2021 11:53 (five years ago)

Are Bloomps eyes perfectly round? Do his eyelids retract completely when they're open? He's all like đź‘€

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Thursday, 4 February 2021 12:07 (five years ago)

I fear we may be laughing at a serious condition

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Thursday, 4 February 2021 12:08 (five years ago)

Hi, I'm Ornaldo Bloomps. Do you look like an idiot when you glance about a room while affecting gravitas? If so, you're not alone. Literally tens of people all over the world suffer similarly. Sadly, there is no cure. We must simply act our way through it. Act as hard as you can, my friends, and furrow that brow.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Thursday, 4 February 2021 12:11 (five years ago)

Acting is when you move your head and sometimes your eyes

scampless, rattled and puce (gyac), Thursday, 4 February 2021 12:16 (five years ago)

is that from The Hobbit? Lilly must have been overjoyed to be put in contrast with Bloom

pastiche con braggadocio (rob), Thursday, 4 February 2021 13:50 (five years ago)

I was just thinking that, she is very bland but she looks like Meryl Streep beside him.

scampless, rattled and puce (gyac), Thursday, 4 February 2021 13:51 (five years ago)

I'm just throwing more dirt on the coffin here really, but I looked up Bloom's oeuvre this morning and apparently there was an episode of Extras starring and titled "Orlando Bloom" that I cannot recall a single thing about (unlike Radcliffe's cameo I hate to say).

pastiche con braggadocio (rob), Thursday, 4 February 2021 13:56 (five years ago)

I'm guess I'm saying "cannot convincingly play themselves in a satire" is the deep sea trench the bar rolled into

pastiche con braggadocio (rob), Thursday, 4 February 2021 13:57 (five years ago)

Would be a very, very strong tell, yes

cpt otm (darraghmac), Thursday, 4 February 2021 14:59 (five years ago)

Marlon Brando

Piven After Midnight (The Yellow Kid), Thursday, 4 February 2021 15:55 (five years ago)

Of course not

cpt otm (darraghmac), Thursday, 4 February 2021 16:02 (five years ago)

pish ... Brando could act with his jaw, but he's no Keira fucking Knightley

sarahell, Thursday, 4 February 2021 18:58 (five years ago)

The lowest-hanging of all possible fruit, but Ronald Reagan is really wooden and ineffective in Don Siegel's version of The Killers. Maybe it is because literally everyone else in the cast--John Cassavetes, Lee Marvin, Angie Dickinson, Clu Gulager, Claude Akins, hell, even Norman Fell--is on fire in that film, but his performance just feels like it is coming from a particularly bad TV show. Maybe I need to see Bedtime for Bonzo or Cattle Queen of Montana or whatever before definitively declaring that Ronald Reagan sucks (as an actor), but his performance in The Killers is one that literally any B-player in Hollywood at the time could have stepped into and done an at least marginally better job.

Beyond that, I don't typically hate actors. At worst, I'm indifferent to the ones I don't like. Vince Vaughn might be an exception: nothing to do with his politics; I just always get an unpleasant vibe from him on the screen. I remember thinking that I really didn't like the aforementioned Ben Mendelsohn after seeing him in a few film roles, but then I ended up quite liking him on the HBO series The Outsider.

I am very happy, as a California native and US Citizen, to definitively state that Ronald Reagan sucks.

sarahell, Thursday, 4 February 2021 19:18 (five years ago)

R.I.P. Bill Weber

sarahell, Thursday, 4 February 2021 19:21 (five years ago)

If we're speaking of individual performances, Eric Roberts in The Pope of Greenwich Village should get an Oscar for scenery chewing.

Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 4 February 2021 19:25 (five years ago)

I didn't mean to make this about individual performances, as I could cite lots of otherwise strong actors I've seen give terrible performances--Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Ben Kingsley seeing who could out-caricature each other with their French accents in The Walk comes immediately to mind--I just wanted to get my dig in at Reagan despite having only seen him in the one movie. And as I doubt he was ever in a better movie than The Killers, I was assuming that I could draw a number of conclusions about his acting from this one performance (his final, in a film, as it turns out).

edited for dog profanity (cryptosicko), Thursday, 4 February 2021 19:31 (five years ago)

cryptosicko -- feel free to talk as much shit about Ronald Reagan as you like!!

sarahell, Thursday, 4 February 2021 19:47 (five years ago)

Shows how subjective these calls are--I watched The Killers less than a week ago on TCM, and I actually thought Reagan was good (helped by knowing some backstory from J. Hoberman's The Dream Life, probably).

clemenza, Thursday, 4 February 2021 19:49 (five years ago)

Never read that Hoberman, but I'm curious now.

edited for dog profanity (cryptosicko), Thursday, 4 February 2021 19:53 (five years ago)

yeah I can't help but project what we know about Reagan on his character in The Killers, so I combine this knowledge with his flat Midwestern voice and his chilliness and it's a solid bad guy performance.

the comments:

AIDS patients: "we want a cure or at least be treated like human beings"

Reagan: "well I can change that in a hurry"

meticulously crafted, socially responsible, morally upsta (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 4 February 2021 19:56 (five years ago)

Hmm. Maybe I'll like him better opposite Stanwyck (or a chimp). Who knows?

edited for dog profanity (cryptosicko), Thursday, 4 February 2021 19:57 (five years ago)

I definitely prefer him dead to anything else

sarahell, Thursday, 4 February 2021 20:01 (five years ago)

Reagan has some great quotes on normalizing the status of undocumented workers, which come in handy whilst trolling right-wingers

Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 4 February 2021 20:05 (five years ago)

Checked the release date for The Killers, and it came out May 30, 1064. I don't know if they started shooting before or after the JFK assassination, but it was originally slated for TV, then moved into movie theatres because it was deemed too violent (for a country still getting over the assassination, according to TCM's film-noir guy). From what I remember of the Hoberman book, Reagan was brought out of retirement and deliberately played off against his folksy image, but there was also his big "Time for Choosing" speech for Goldwater lurking in the background, and the John Birch Society, and an emerging right-wing craziness smaller in scale than today's but not entirely dissimilar. With all of that in the background, he seemed kind of sinister to me.

clemenza, Thursday, 4 February 2021 20:06 (five years ago)

A 900-year typo...

clemenza, Thursday, 4 February 2021 20:07 (five years ago)

Now Norman Fell as a heavy, that's a different story.

clemenza, Thursday, 4 February 2021 20:08 (five years ago)

I'm feeling more and more that contextualizing Reagan's performance in The Killers (via Hoberman, and Eddie Muller, who I watch most weeks and only skipped this week because I'd seen the film on Criterion Channel so recently) is the key to appreciating it.

edited for dog profanity (cryptosicko), Thursday, 4 February 2021 20:10 (five years ago)

the John Birch Society, and an emerging right-wing craziness smaller in scale than today's but not entirely dissimilar.

yeah, I grew up around that.

sarahell, Thursday, 4 February 2021 20:49 (five years ago)

many xps but when ever I see anything with Vince Vaughn I always think about the episode of dead pixels where his casting in kingdom scrolls is announced. " He is both too substantial and not substantial enough!"

oscar bravo, Thursday, 4 February 2021 20:54 (five years ago)

Vaughn has done barroom guy comedy well, brooding menace frankly unbelievably well, generally a strong presence a good director can use a few ways

cpt otm (darraghmac), Thursday, 4 February 2021 20:57 (five years ago)

I was actually okay with him in True Detective

sarahell, Thursday, 4 February 2021 22:09 (five years ago)

vaughn is great in true detective season 2, i know it is hard to believe, i too cannot believe it

Does Kris Marshall count? He has mostly had a career being a gormless cunt on TV, but he does have a side career being a gormless cunt in films, he is also tipped to be the new Dr Who, god help us.

Bastard Lakes (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 4 February 2021 22:40 (five years ago)

Future generations will discover this vast wealth of Bloom gifs, and will wonder what kind of society we were, and just what we valued.

Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 4 February 2021 23:00 (five years ago)

The actor has been widely tipped for the 13th Doctor role in recent weeks due to a betting surge and his curiously timed exit from BBC’s Death in Paradise.

According to an interview with the HeraldSun, Marshall stated he was “very flattered to be considered by the good public” as the next Doctor, before adding “I wouldn’t put any money on it yet.”

In the future, everyone will be the 13th Doctor for fifteen minutes.

Kris Marshall is really bad, and managed to be one of the worst parts of appalling Christmas film Love Actually. Is he Bloom-bad?

https://img.rasset.ie/000dbacf-500.jpg

I literally cannot stand to watch him on screen, but I’m unconvinced that’s sheer badness and not just personal dislike tbh.

scampless, rattled and puce (gyac), Thursday, 4 February 2021 23:10 (five years ago)

on one hand he does seem to have a bit too much, well you can't exactly call it "personality" but he has a presence, albeit a repellant one

on the other hand that is just his real face and his real personality, he has never shown any ability to either work it into a role or make it a bit that works on its own.

suppose I should watch some more of his serious acting to find out, except no, not going to do that of course.
