cpt otm (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:00 (five years ago)

nominating on my partner's behalf: Adrien Brody

rob, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:00 (five years ago)

which I think inspires me to establish a personal criterion for this thread: if the actor displays fewer signs of life than a featured zombie in a George Romero movie, then they definitely qualify.

for example

sarahell, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:01 (five years ago)

I've seen Raft a few times and don't remember much about him, so you're probably right OL, but classic hollywood v. contemporary acting feels too apples to oranges for me to really rail on anyone from the '40s

rob, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:02 (five years ago)

Adrien has a really characterful face and tbh i think hes getting away with it

if we went back only the few years, johnny depp would be in real trouble imo

cpt otm (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:03 (five years ago)

rob otm

sarahell, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:04 (five years ago)

Kier is a tour de force as flailing melt dying a painful political death, but not sure the lad has much more range!

calzino, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:05 (five years ago)

Chevy Chase comes to mind.

octobeard, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:05 (five years ago)

Holy shit

Radcliffe is acting the *shit* out of bloom there

Im rattled, i never thought id see the day

But radcliffe is off top spot

sarahell, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:06 (five years ago)

I know I'm letting the thread down but none of the Radcliffe gifs have hit like the other two, I'm so sorry

xp!

rob, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:06 (five years ago)

Did Knightley actually unhinge her jaw in that last gif? Because I'm not sure I've ever seen a non-snake vertebrate do that with their face before.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:06 (five years ago)

Chase and many SNL beloveds are terrible at everything they got success in but think you do have to draw line under comedians who are acting unless they really try to cross the line

cpt otm (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:06 (five years ago)

seriously though -- talking about country and culture and class and race -- the guy who plays this zombie in Land of the Dead is really really good.

sarahell, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:07 (five years ago)

a dangerous method indeed!

difficult listening hour, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:07 (five years ago)

xp to self: which also featured solid actor John Leguizamo who was also very good in this

sarahell, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:08 (five years ago)

love leguizamo.

difficult listening hour, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:09 (five years ago)

and in answer to the opposite: actors who are good in whatever -- I nominate Bruce Dern

sarahell, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:09 (five years ago)

David Duchovny deserves some kind of honorable mention for subtle mediocrity.

Many xps because this thread is moving too fast to keep up with, but imo Duchovny is a decent actor who knows his limits and made Mulder a much more compelling character than he had any reason to be just by playing him like a lizard sunning itself on a rock. Also was one of the few good things about Twin Peaks season 2. Gillian Anderson, on the other hand - she was good as Scully, but lately she annoys me with her "look I'm acting" mannerisms and her whispery voice.

Mods

cpt otm (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:11 (five years ago)

Duchovny was solid in that show Aquarius about the Manson stuff

sarahell, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:12 (five years ago)

Chevy Chase is a drummer iirc

I have Guns Akimbo in my queue already so I was happy to not be appalled by that Radgiffe

shivers me timber (sic), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:13 (five years ago)

I haven't seen any Harry Potters so I am guessing that's why I don't find that guy as loathsome as y'all?

sarahell, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:14 (five years ago)

Yes

cpt otm (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:15 (five years ago)

has anyone seen swiss army man, the film where daniel radcliffe plays a talking, farting corpse?

because i think we need a report about that.

Bastard Lakes (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:15 (five years ago)

I believe it may have been mentioned

cpt otm (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:16 (five years ago)

i have seen all of the hp films for my sins and there are plenty of worse actors than DR - whoever plays the weasley twins might be the worst of all

Bastard Lakes (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:16 (five years ago)

I assume Emma Watson was asked and answered

rob, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:16 (five years ago)

Her gig as hermione pits her beyond thread tbh

cpt otm (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:17 (five years ago)

Theodore "Ted" Logan isn't John "Neo" Anderson isn't John Wick isn't Don Juan isn't Jonathan Harker isn't John Constantine.

I meant, some of these are clear systemic failures that demand inquiries, but he has a range of levers and buttons to work with.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:19 (five years ago)

Rupert Grint is terrible too, I assumed he was just eclipsed by yerman?

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:19 (five years ago)

we can absolutely close the case on Keanu, yes

rob, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:20 (five years ago)

Tbh i might quibble about all of that bar Constantine!

cpt otm (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:20 (five years ago)

Rupert Grint as Cheetah Chrome of the Dead Boys in the CBGB movie was a real standout in a field of terrible performances

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:21 (five years ago)

― shivers me timber (sic), Wednesday, February 3, 2021 5:13 PM bookmarkflaglink

feel like the star of that movie is Samara Weaving, only I didn't know it was her because of how different she looks in it

Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:22 (five years ago)

Similar to watson tho, hes imo decent enough as grint to move beyond the pull of the thread

Also no career since tbf

cpt otm (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:22 (five years ago)

Lowkey agree with yerwan from starlight

cpt otm (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:23 (five years ago)

Wait, twilight

cpt otm (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:23 (five years ago)

I'm pretty sure Knightly said Cronenberg carefully described all that jaw action to her. Maybe that's why he cast her.

Now I want to see a film with her biting people really fucking hard.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:27 (five years ago)

I hear she's in the upcoming JAWS remake

rob, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:28 (five years ago)

didn't I just post upthread about her future as a zombie co-starring with Bruce Campbell

sarahell, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:29 (five years ago)

A Rabid remake where she bites instead of armpit stabs would be great

Robert Adam Gilmour, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:30 (five years ago)

Shes been biting bonham carter since day one

cpt otm (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:30 (five years ago)

Kirk Cameron

Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:30 (five years ago)

speaking of jaws, I thought this might be too challopsy, but Richard Dreyfus

obvs he's no Bloomps but I could happily recast every role he's done

rob, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:32 (five years ago)

Mr Holland's Opus, starring Billy Connolly as Mr Holland

Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:33 (five years ago)

Ah no hes absolutely joyous in jaws, his angry disbelief at the mayor is genuinely one of the best moments of acting in a hollywood blockbuster i can think of

cpt otm (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:33 (five years ago)

i liked his unhinged quality in Close Encounters as well

Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 22:34 (five years ago)
