ethan hawke is great. maybe people are conflating "is annoying/obnoxious in certain 90s roles" with doing a bad job as an actor.

it’s a strange field but hawke is probably the best screen hamlet. the decade or so when every xer was processing their reality bytes fallout by claiming he is terrible was a weird time.

The thing also is that if I am considering this thread seriously, the actors are so bad that their presence is pure distracting with the badness.

I've seen Raft a few times and don't remember much about him, so you're probably right OL, but classic hollywood v. contemporary acting feels too apples to oranges for me to really rail on anyone from the '40s
