No mention of Gerard Butler in the stinker list? Or does he just *make* stinkers?
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:06 (five years ago)
I assume it's because they're all called Chris

I saw twitter memes, a lot of asian people tweeting "how are we supposed to tell these guys apart?"
I once saw a woman on television crying and talking about something traumatic and I was thinking "god, that's just abysmal acting", then I had the horrible realization that it wasn't a film and this was a real person talking about a real traumatic experience.

Marky Mark has been mentioned already, but he's pretty terrible a lot of the time.
like Hanks, he is redeemed by one role that brought me genuine joy. In Mark's case, it was "I'm the guy that does his job, you must be the other guy." The Departed.
Also, I give a blanket exemption for anyone in L.A. Confidential because the casting and direction was just great imo
― sarahell, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:07 (five years ago)
shit, you might be right, Spacey is maybe p good in that?
― rob, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:07 (five years ago)

― sarahell,
Best quote, and now you're getting into the swing of things
Do you know who can get into the box with spacey and malkovich, and this is not gonna go down well?
― Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:11 (five years ago)
macmurray’s smug anticharisma is being used v deliberately in both of those movies
― difficult listening hour, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:11 (five years ago)
Judi Dench
Yes, he's in it, and yes he's good. As is everyone from DeVito on up (in his case, literally).
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:11 (five years ago)
Take yr word for it dlh
― Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:12 (five years ago)
It gives me no pleasure to recall that Spacey's final scene with Cromwell is legit good
But wait: Kim Basinger
ha, I almost said Dench but assumed that was a challops
― rob, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:12 (five years ago)
Wary of offering 80s bombshells etc because like what roles could they have gotten, often, kinda thing, but then i said demi moore anyway

Butler too earthily notably real to really get in but def a hugely limited actor
Stuart townsend was almost cast as aragorn iirc, would def have been in danger of the list if that had happened, dull as ditchwater and he riding charlize theron ffs
― Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:15 (five years ago)
you wanna bust that body?
MacMurray is perfect for the role in The Apartment, whether or not he did anything on purpose
I also can barely tell the Chrises apart, bar Pratt
and tbf he's doing his best to blend into the mass of 'em since Parks & Rec
― shivers me timber (sic), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:16 (five years ago)
Matrix/keanu is worth thinking about because swap in bloom and tbh id see no difference
― Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:17 (five years ago)
Mark Wahlberg couldn't be better in Boogie Nights. (He was pretty terrible in the Gambler remake, though.)
― clemenza, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:17 (five years ago)
Dench and Basinger have nothing on Anne Hathaway -- I watched Dark Waters the other night, and she played Mark Ruffalo's wife, and fortunately she wasn't given as much screentime as the wives of crusading lawyers in these types of movies are usually given. Thank you Todd Haynes, I appreciate you!
― sarahell, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:17 (five years ago)
If they gave awards for playing Kevin Spacey, Kevin Spacey would certainly win year after year regardless of the movie.
I was young and dumb and thought he was amazing in The Usual Suspects, Glenngary Glenross and whatever other earlier acclaimed stuff he was in. Then I saw him in American Beauty and realized he had always played himself in every role and he did not vary what he was doing one iota.

Hathaway made me and kevin k cry in les mis so no way!
― Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:18 (five years ago)
* at the end of the movie they show the actual people the movie is based on, and the wife does resemble Anne Hathaway a bit, and I can see potentially she could be annoying in the same way, so I am just going to assume Todd Haynes cast her for that purpose.
― sarahell, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:19 (five years ago)
i once saw Kevin Spacey in the Broadway production of Moon for the Misbegotten, which also included Brendan Gleeson.
Spacey gave hours worth of line-readings and very broad-strokey overacting, but not much else. everybody else in the cast acted him off the stage, and the review said he has "tons of charisma and no idea what to do with it"
― Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:19 (five years ago)
kicking myself as I could have seen Eric Bogosian in the revival of Talk Radio
I am imagining Bloom in The Matrix *doing an american accent* and idk deems idk

― rob, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:22 (five years ago)
I do kinda like Spacey's impressions cos all that requires of him is imitation
mostly tho just in the SNL sketch where he's on Dave Letterman (played by Norm MacDonald, who keeps repeating things like "Got any gum?")
― Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:23 (five years ago)
Lol its so fuckin true spacey impersonations are just spacey and it drives me insane to see him on TV, not just cheapening his craft because wgaf but being clapped on by people who are delighted that he his or might be cheapening his craft for their amusement but the twist is he has no craft and his impersonations absolutely demonstrate this
If nic cage pulled similar it would be genius tho

I think his "Whoa!" would have sounded less authentic? ... honestly I feel like Keanu is perpetually Ted, and if the movie would work with Ted in it, then ok.

Hathaway is very good in Colossal, an excellent movie; fine in Ocean's 8, a moderately competent movie; and has a lot of fun eating scenery in The Witches, an unnecessary and fairly bad movie. I also intend to watch Rachel Getting Married one day, though suspect she does too much Acting in it.
― shivers me timber (sic), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:25 (five years ago)
I don't remember who pointed it out but someone in the House of Cards thread pointed out there was a scene where he got angry at his wife and for about ten minutes, dropped the ridiculous southern accent he'd been using for 3 seasons for like the entirety of it. and then went back to it after that scene ended.
I watched it shortly after reading that post and it was completely accurate, one of the most bizarre things ever. I mean yeah the argument could be made that hte exaggerated accent is his politician-speak, but he never dropped those mannerisms with his wife in private, so...that doesn't make sense either.
― Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 21:26 (five years ago)
Spacey does a good robot voice in "Moon."
