He seems to have done his best work early.

Ryan Philippe seems to consistently get work and I don’t think I’ve ever liked him in anything?!

scampless, rattled and puce (gyac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 18:39 (five years ago)

He was noted earlier alright, not an awful shout

One where being so pretty might have covered him for a while but nope, bloom level charisma and ability under it

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 18:39 (five years ago)

Bloom is a tolerably goodlooking marshwiggle, like

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 18:40 (five years ago)

JG was great in that John Mulaney kids special

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 18:40 (five years ago)

Henry Cavill's a decent baddie in Mission Impossible, and I can't remember a single baddie in those movies except for Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

Seth Rogen? Patchy after Undeclared, consistently terrible since Funny People

Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 19:28 (five years ago)

He's not a *bad* actor but I've always hated watching/been bored by Frank Langella

Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 19:30 (five years ago)

oh u watch his performance and Skeletor and say that u heathen!

Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 19:31 (five years ago)

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 19:32 (five years ago)

loooooool xpost

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 19:32 (five years ago)

That is literally the only Langella role I'm able to summon up from memory at any given time, so there may be something to Chuck's assertion.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 19:34 (five years ago)

there's also his Nixon that doesn't look, sound, or act like Nixon

Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 19:35 (five years ago)

weirdly that was also in Masters of the Universe

Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 19:36 (five years ago)

I find Ryan Philippe charming because he has kind of a stupid voice/ general unintentional goofiness, don't know if that's really an adequate defense though.

I am not a psychic community (Lily Dale), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 19:38 (five years ago)

i once again nom Zach Efron

Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 19:39 (five years ago)

I find Phillippe charming because he's a weirdo comedy (Tim & Eric, Eric Andre) fan and because he was a game participant in weirdo comedy classic MacGruber but I don't really have much time for the things he acts in, generally.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 19:47 (five years ago)

Wtf is wrong with ppl who are picking Claire Danes and Ben Mendelsohn? You must be joking or maybe you just don't like them/their roles? Anyone doubting the greatness of Ben M should watch the first season of Bloodline ...

sarahell, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 19:53 (five years ago)

shia leboueuf

Joses Chrust (map), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 19:54 (five years ago)

There are actors who I find irritating to watch but are not bad actors -- Elizabeth Moss is one of those -- but she isn't a bad actor.

sarahell, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 19:54 (five years ago)

Has Kristen Stewart come up yet? She's more wooden than an axe handle.

Andy the Grasshopper, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 19:57 (five years ago)

she's been good in quite a few things though like Still Alice

Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 19:59 (five years ago)

Kristen Stewart good not bad

Canon in Deez (silby), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 20:02 (five years ago)

Not at all surprised to see good-looking and bad-actor somewhat interchangeable here.

avatar of a kind of respectability homosexual culture (Eric H.), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 20:03 (five years ago)

my favorite thing that happened in this thread so far is someone bringing up hayden christensen and then that suggestion getting immediately dismissed bc whatever his actual talents he was perfectly suited to play stephen glass in shattered glass

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 20:04 (five years ago)

Being good-looking makes you a good actor usually.

Canon in Deez (silby), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 20:06 (five years ago)

seth rogen certainly doesn't belong in this thread, tho i will definitely entertain the argument that his best-ever performance was in freaks and geeks

tiwa-nty one savage (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 20:07 (five years ago)

I've said it before but Katherine Heigl transformed into a little boy for the role in Babadook. What other actor can claim that?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 20:07 (five years ago)

speaking of wooden -- John Krasinski -- Dominic West is fucking Alec Guinness compared to that guy. Not even Wendell Pierce can make him interesting, and Wendell Pierce was excellent at making Dominic West appealing to watch.

sarahell, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 20:11 (five years ago)

oh hell yeah john krasinski qualifies for this thread

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 20:12 (five years ago)

complete nullity whose screen presence makes you want to climb out of your skin

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 20:13 (five years ago)

and he is very tall, so the nullity is more extreme

sarahell, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 20:14 (five years ago)

John Krasinski would have gotten screamed at by any theater actor for the constant "finger over mouth" in A Quiet Place

Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 20:14 (five years ago)

Most of these nominations surprise me, it really isn't that often that I'm bothered by a performance, there's plenty of actors I don't really like but I don't think that's much about ability.

Is there really much consensus on what makes good or bad acting?

But I will die on a hill for Craig Wasson in Body Double.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 20:15 (five years ago)

xpost half imagined if he was eating dinner in the movie he was going to rub his belly and pat his head

Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 20:15 (five years ago)

guys,

shia labeouf

Joses Chrust (map), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 20:15 (five years ago)

It would be tough to pick between Krasinski and Kit Harrington

sarahell, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 20:15 (five years ago)

also, one of the three (?) hot chrises (but i don't know which one).

Joses Chrust (map), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 20:17 (five years ago)

though I think I felt something akin to warmth from Harrington in the scenes with his dog in GoT

sarahell, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 20:18 (five years ago)

who are these Chrises?

sarahell, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 20:18 (five years ago)

David Duchovny deserves some kind of honorable mention for subtle mediocrity.

Andy the Grasshopper, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 20:19 (five years ago)

pratt is one. heyworth? emworth? and then another one i'm forgetting

Joses Chrust (map), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 20:19 (five years ago)

chris evans

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 20:20 (five years ago)

david duchovny is a good answer

Joses Chrust (map), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 20:20 (five years ago)

and you mean hemsworth xp

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 20:20 (five years ago)

pratt is covered upthread, a selection i kind of agree with. the other chrises are very good

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 20:20 (five years ago)

post a controversial opinion: every choice hemsworth makes in blackhat excludes him from this thread alone

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 20:21 (five years ago)

duchovny reminds me of david spade - though i don't think you could really call him the "worst actor", he remained pretty niche.

xp i don't know if i'll ever be able to remember which is which

Joses Chrust (map), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 20:22 (five years ago)

KStew is a FOAF and I only know good things about her

mildew and sanctimony (soda), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 20:23 (five years ago)

Think we are clearly slipped well into "i dislike this person" again tbh

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 20:23 (five years ago)

Chris Pine has been excellent in a couple of movies, especially Hell or High Water. Chris Pratt has been fine and fun in Marvel, Parks and Rec ... Hemsworth is a good Thor, and was good in Cabin in the Woods. Chris Evans is a good Captain America, and was really funny in Scott Pilgrim.
