xpost eh i also think he's terrible in TV things like The Witcher and Enola Holmes

fine, someone else who I mentally file in the same category: Armie Hammer, who thankfully will no longer be appearing on any screens anytime soon.

Roz, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 14:44 (five years ago)

Caught square re van dien

Think armie was competent as twins, in remake of thingy, as yerman in uncle, in psycho redhead exes movie

can u tell im not invested in knocking him too far out of contention, but "awful person" prob isn't in itself a factor tho

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 14:47 (five years ago)

I enjoy Armie Hammer and I have studiously avoided knowing anything about his leaked DMs because I need less nonsense that doesn’t matter in my life

Canon in Deez (silby), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 14:49 (five years ago)

Armie Hammer is a prick but he was great in Sorry To Bother You.

wangdalf the blight (gyac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 14:49 (five years ago)

Oh I forgot about Sorry to Bother You! yes ok will concede he was good in that

Roz, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 14:50 (five years ago)

Yeah forgot that

Good example of casting meh well

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 14:52 (five years ago)

Mendelsohn is very good. So is Guy Pearce.

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 15:03 (five years ago)

Armie Hammer was terrific in Call Me By Your Name, just the right blond smugness.

meticulously crafted, socially responsible, morally upsta (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 15:03 (five years ago)

Hammer's problem is that he's too conventionally handsome to be the decent utility-player character actor he is, so the money people keep trying to turn him into a movie star, which he will never be.

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 15:05 (five years ago)

^^that also perfectly describes the early career of James Marsden, who I’ve now come to appreciate as someone who can always be relied upon to deliver a solid, decent performance in whatever role he’s cast in

Roz, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 15:19 (five years ago)

Zach Efron

Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 15:20 (five years ago)

Just remembered I've seen DanRad tread the boards, opposite John Lithgow in How to succeed in business. I guess he was fine! He's short, which is relatable.

Canon in Deez (silby), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 15:21 (five years ago)

Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 15:22 (five years ago)

Basically if you're born with a face that ensures you never have to try hard at anything in life we probably shouldn't expect any outsized expenditure of effort from you when you inevitably try your hand at acting

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 15:22 (five years ago)

I mean sometimes they'll surprise you but usually nah

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 15:22 (five years ago)

Cavill was good in The Man from Uncle, but I couldn't stop catching myself thinking "You know, he'd be a good Superman"

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 15:36 (five years ago)

I was waiting for james marsden to come up and im gonna pull out the measure again

James Corden getting a good fresh round of "worst actor ever" this morning.

avatar of a kind of respectability homosexual culture (Eric H.), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 15:39 (five years ago)

On the same morning the actual worst actor Jared Leto somehow snatched a GG nod.

Really, reeealllly good looks *can maybe* act as a function like being able to dance or sing or comedic or action ability, but i think that the ability to act in the way we have utterly failed to coherently scope out, to "be" in front of a camera and not shrivel the viewer a little, is nonetheless distinct from it

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 15:41 (five years ago)

My acting teacher used to tell me that the worst thing a screen actor could do was bore, naturalistically. She believed that boring dramatically took enormous skills

The second worse thing she said they could do was wait until they had entered the scene before they started acting.

The answer to the question of this thread would be a low-energy naturalistic actor who wanders across the screen before mumbling a line. Orlando fits the bill.

mildew and sanctimony (soda), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 15:46 (five years ago)

I also submit Lin-Manuel Miranda for consideration

mildew and sanctimony (soda), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 15:47 (five years ago)

Oh yeah James Corden is awful. I had to watch The Prom a couple months ago and wow

flamboyant goon tie included, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 15:48 (five years ago)

Its maybe but not quite analogous to presence i mean this thread isnt chipping away at any new questions here but i saw for instance brad pitt offered upthread presumably as a troll, now i happen to think brad pitt is a very good movie actor, showy and distracting at times sure but entertaining, talented enough across a broad board and interesting.

He was in friends, and i think throwing a movie star into a gauzy-round-the-edges sitcom focus is maybe a good test

He was in friends and immediately it was "this'll be good what will they do with brad pitt" and they did nothing inspired but he played well with being brad pitt in that context as well as finding a friends pitch, done the job and went home.

If you were watching friends (and it does not for the purposes matter how you feel about friends) and the camera panned to daniel radcliffe youd hope that it was an accident, that theyd carry on without a pause. youd hope for his sake but also the situations sake and the viewers sake that he didnt get to open his mouth the same way you would about an especially dull and charmless and unwelcoming-of-attn kid in your class who came to the attn of the class, sweaty for them and knowing this wont be good at best itll be awkward and unglamorous and stupidly unsensible like all of life's unscripted joins and wishing you didnt have to see it but also a little bit hating their awfulness and wishing in some small hairline unacknowledge way that they be punished and removed so that you would never have to tolerate or acknowledge or be embarrassed for the room or fear bearing witness to their own agonies of the small moment ever again

brad pitt nor clooney nor olivier never made anyone feel like that nor would they if you saw them appear somewhere in the glare of attn like that

jesus lads jerry o connell wouldnt ever make you feel like *that*

the bar is daniel radcliffe and how he makes *you* feel when you see that someone else has seen *him* and he knows they have seen him

the bar is miserable and profound

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 15:55 (five years ago)

daniel radcliffe is the boy in the portrait in tom cruise's attic

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 16:01 (five years ago)

I also submit Lin-Manuel Miranda for consideration

Seconded

wangdalf the blight (gyac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 16:04 (five years ago)

Corden is vastly above Bloom level based on The Wrong Mans and The Lodger, as hateful as he may be for many other reasons

If you can’t enjoy Joan Cusack, you don’t deserve movies

shivers me timber (sic), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 16:05 (five years ago)

deems, I'm going to see if I can get you a deal to flesh out your 'Radcliffe = worst actor' arguments into a legit book. The world needs this.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 16:06 (five years ago)

For women, I’d add perpetual wet blanket Claire Danes

mildew and sanctimony (soda), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 16:08 (five years ago)

xpost don't need to write a lot, just flesh light

Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 16:08 (five years ago)

none of this persuades me that he wasn’t aptly cast as the titular flatulent cadaver tbf

shivers me timber (sic), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 16:08 (five years ago)

Someone suggested Joan Cusack? She's amazing! Just for School of Rock ("I've just been informed that all your children are missing") and Broadcast News alone. And she's really good in a more serious role in The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

clemenza, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 16:08 (five years ago)

yeah she was good in Perks. I always enjoyed her in Grosse Point Blank too, as her unhinged assistant.

"He's a real BAD ASS!!!"

Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 16:10 (five years ago)

I was gonna protest (its my role itt) claire danes and i realised that each of my counterarguments was in fact the charismatic and interesting anna paquin

i haven't seen the americans does that save claire danes, anyone

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 16:10 (five years ago)

We cannot rise to the bait of ppl offering cusacks.

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 16:11 (five years ago)

Yes Joan Cusack rules. An argument could be made for John though...

Roz, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 16:11 (five years ago)

i haven't seen the americans does that save claire danes, anyone

Is that Homeland or Homefront? She isn't in The Americans.

clemenza, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 16:13 (five years ago)

In itself a tell i feel

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 16:14 (five years ago)

ftr I was joking about Claire Danes upthread, but Anna Paquin absolutely fits

Roz, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 16:15 (five years ago)

No!

Elle est charmante

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 16:16 (five years ago)

Ben Mendo is a ludicrous nom. The Yesr My Voice Broke, The Big Steal, Cosi, Amy, Metal Skin, Mullet, Animal Kingdom, Idiot fucken Box? ffs

shivers me timber (sic), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 16:16 (five years ago)

jerry o'connell is a good answer

Americas sweethearts again

Honestly ilx will u not pls acknowledge this masterpiece

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 16:21 (five years ago)

Chuck Norris

Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 16:21 (five years ago)

Claire Danes was amazing in Homeland. I only watched the first season but she was very skilled at making this X of creases appear on her face any time her character was "getting a little bipolar"

flamboyant goon tie included, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 16:21 (five years ago)

deems my comment upthread implicitly stated that i love america's sweethearts and think it is a great film

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 16:22 (five years ago)

as reprehensible as i find him as a person, john cusack has been good in movies iirc

at one point about a decade ago (?) he listed the few actually-good movies he starred in and it was completely accurate, so I appreciate that
