my argument is not that Madonna should be excluded from consideration

All shapes and sizes of Jake Gyllenhaal leave me cold.

― The Man, DeLorean (onimo), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 17:20 (yesterday) bookmarkflaglink

We have the answer please don't make me do the work.

Range of roles from indie to blockbuster with challenging award bait in between.
Amazing physical transformations coz he puts the work in.
Brings an uncannily identical absence of weight, charisma and talent to every role.
Could be replaced by a better actor in every job he's ever had.

Like a Martin Freeman who won't just settle for the everyman calling he deserves.

The Man DeLorean (onimo), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 12:31 (five years ago)

yeah but he's hot

meticulously crafted, socially responsible, morally upsta (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 12:32 (five years ago)

I'll concede the hotness.

The Man DeLorean (onimo), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 12:33 (five years ago)

Trying to think of actors who might make steeple-fingers and squint broodingly while pondering a question from James Lipton

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 12:45 (five years ago)

And begin their answer with 'well, James, the craft of acting...'

I think Emma Stone is total garbage (although she was charming in Superbad)

Wanted to address this actually

She is smart, can deliver a tinny character or a snarky one, can be v charming

Without exception, every single time her character is called to show the ~real emotional core~ underneath she makes like a puking fox, absolutely awful

But cannot be considered because some talent as per first para

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 13:05 (five years ago)

xps i fully encourage everyone to do the work, its a participation exercise!

i cannot be convinced that gyllenhaal from end of watch and nightcrawler belongs in the category tbh

do his buggy eyes do a lot more work than people actually call out? Yep.

Are his two modes besides glassy exec presenting or moody teen? Yep, for the most part.

Like id hear out a case he is bad, overrated, etc but cant have him in the category

But interesting nom def

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 13:07 (five years ago)

Fair enough re: Stone.

I'm a fan of Villeneuve even tho others are not and I enjoyed both noted-bad-actors Gyllenhaal and Jackman in Prisoners

flamboyant goon tie included, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 13:17 (five years ago)

Villeneuve has patchy movies with brilliant sequences through to movies i think are incredible start to finish, i havent actually noticed much of a pattern in terms of what he gets out of his actors (though gyllenhaal was good in prisoners, didnt think it was a good movie at all)

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 13:23 (five years ago)

Next: kevin spacey

^^^

He was going to be mine as soon as I saw the thread title.

Off to the tip with jordan

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 13:28 (five years ago)

I feel it's going excellently

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 13:28 (five years ago)

gyllenhaal was great in nightcrawler and he seems to be leaning towards cage-like absurdity in recent films like okja

tiwa-nty one savage (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 13:30 (five years ago)

John Cusack is good not bad

This may or may not be partly related to finding gif sinister Utopia character attractive.

Emma Stone has that Keira Knightley problem of being cast in stuff she has no business being in, but Stone is already much better than KK will ever be.

wangdalf the blight (gyac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 13:38 (five years ago)

gif? wtf? his*

wangdalf the blight (gyac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 13:39 (five years ago)

gyllenhaal is absolutely good in roles where he gets to lean into his weirdness like Nightcrawler and his delightful-yet-utterly-baffling appearance in John Mulaney's Sack Lunch Bunch. There's a reason Donnie Darko made him a star.

I just thought of a recent one: Henry Cavill. ugh

Roz, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 13:44 (five years ago)

Oh! Here's one! Ben Mendelsohn. Even his breathing is unconvicing.

meticulously crafted, socially responsible, morally upsta (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 13:47 (five years ago)

I liked him in Animal Kingdom

Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 13:53 (five years ago)

I will say I don’t understand Ben Whishaw’s popularity at all.

wangdalf the blight (gyac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 13:54 (five years ago)

is ben whishaw popular? i mean he seems to get regular gigs but I don't get the impression he's anywhere close to the name recognition level of a Bloom. His biggest role to date afaict is Q.

Roz, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 13:58 (five years ago)

Cavill mendelson cool presences, can do accents, can act either funny or straight roles, absolutely not near the running tbh

Whishaw was spellbinding (or spellbindingly well cast in a key role) in perfume

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 14:15 (five years ago)

Violently disagree -- a hollow man. His American accent is awful, and his posh tones in Rogue One ("Am I still in coh-MAHND?") suggest why the Empire eventually lost to the Rebel Alliance.

meticulously crafted, socially responsible, morally upsta (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 14:17 (five years ago)

Hes really good in the outsider and v dece in captain marvel

Look hes nowhere near the bar

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 14:18 (five years ago)

Which is not a line you get to use about an aussie often what what

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 14:19 (five years ago)

This crosstalk about two different Bens is making my head spin

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 14:20 (five years ago)

mendelsohn is good imo

cavill otoh is someone's focus-grouped, computer-generated idea of a movie star

Roz, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 14:24 (five years ago)

oooh yes Cavill, though....I guess I did like him in the Man from U.N.C.L.E. movie, which is maybe the only time that's ever happened.

Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 14:25 (five years ago)

That actually checks out in re his disappeared beard that time

But charisma alone in the likes of man from uncle set him clear

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 14:26 (five years ago)

i enjoyed cavil's haughtiness in that mission impossible movie, i don't think wooden acting in zack snyder movies should be the end-all be-all of judgment for him

tiwa-nty one savage (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 14:35 (five years ago)

Van dien never even got to paul walker fame let alone orlando bloom fame but not an awful shout tbh

― Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, February 2, 2021 10:14 PM (yesterday) bookmarkflaglink

i thought one of the rules was that the cast of starship troopers gets a pass

tiwa-nty one savage (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 14:38 (five years ago)

xpost eh i also think he's terrible in TV things like The Witcher and Enola Holmes

fine, someone else who I mentally file in the same category: Armie Hammer, who thankfully will no longer be appearing on any screens anytime soon.

Roz, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 14:44 (five years ago)

Caught square re van dien

Think armie was competent as twins, in remake of thingy, as yerman in uncle, in psycho redhead exes movie

can u tell im not invested in knocking him too far out of contention, but "awful person" prob isn't in itself a factor tho

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 14:47 (five years ago)

I enjoy Armie Hammer and I have studiously avoided knowing anything about his leaked DMs because I need less nonsense that doesn’t matter in my life

Canon in Deez (silby), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 14:49 (five years ago)

Armie Hammer is a prick but he was great in Sorry To Bother You.

wangdalf the blight (gyac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 14:49 (five years ago)

Oh I forgot about Sorry to Bother You! yes ok will concede he was good in that

Roz, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 14:50 (five years ago)

Yeah forgot that

Good example of casting meh well

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 14:52 (five years ago)

See also Aaron Eckart in Thank You For Smoking

flamboyant goon tie included, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 15:02 (five years ago)

Mendelsohn is very good. So is Guy Pearce.

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 15:03 (five years ago)

Armie Hammer was terrific in Call Me By Your Name, just the right blond smugness.

meticulously crafted, socially responsible, morally upsta (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 15:03 (five years ago)

Hammer's problem is that he's too conventionally handsome to be the decent utility-player character actor he is, so the money people keep trying to turn him into a movie star, which he will never be.

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 15:05 (five years ago)
