I nominate Orson Welles, whose greatest accomplishment was making himself seem competent as an actor.
lol it's true that other directors deploy him as a prop. (even reed?)
still tho no.

i like in gosford park when ryan phillipe says
would that be hot milk... or cold
― difficult listening hour, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:48 (five years ago)
Have you seen _Big Little Lies_, OL? I thought Woodley was good in that.
― Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:49 (five years ago)
deems, I think you're going too hard on Radcliffe inasmuch as he is a child actor who is now an adult, so on that front he's actually doing okay for himself, he may not be any competition for the classically-trained crew but let him have his fun if it keeps him off the drugs I say
― Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:52 (five years ago)
Radcliffe as black swan
Just sitting there, blinking owlpotterishly, like his mother first demanded when he was 8 and scared and cameras flashing and he just wanted to please everyone
Poor fucker, soul half-formed, praised for looking about right while the same ghoul who feasted on m culkins innocence descended upon him with a script by jk fuckin rowling, sorry kid this is your life now
I mean imagine the deserted wreck of a human thus formed in black swan
Ive no idea where bloom emerged from. The pinch of a demon through the cloth of a darker fucking universe than this, and we let it spawn with katy perry and on the cusp of this squall of horror ive smart fuckers slagging off meryl streep well tear it all down i say ill go smiling if even one of youse animals is dragged with me meryl streep honest to christ

Not so
― Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:56 (five years ago)
I love michael palin, but hes a horrible mugger in his (even half) dramatic efforts
― Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:57 (five years ago)

Costner gets a pass for Bull Durham
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:58 (five years ago)
And Tin Cup tbh
― flamboyant goon tie included, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:59 (five years ago)
I just meant that I don't think actors are to blame for what seem like bad performances, but this obviously isn't the thread to argue that.
― Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:59 (five years ago)
Philippe and Bloom it's like.. they look like Nick Carters of course they're going to get cast
Please explain instead to me Jonathan Pryce
― flamboyant goon tie included, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 03:00 (five years ago)
Does Richard Gere count as an actor? He seems like someone who just shows up and plays Richard Gere and then later they dub over any instances where he refers to himself on camera as Richard Gere.
― Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 03:02 (five years ago)
I'm not sure Cameron Diaz is or ever was good.Again, my references are rarely going to be contemporary. I'm scrolling backwards through my watched films on Letterboxd and it took me like a handful of finger flicks to get to the '90s.
― Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 03:04 (five years ago)
xpost Tin Cup is great, his total self destruction in the tournament at the end is such a great scene, totally turns the sports movie cliche on its head
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 03:04 (five years ago)
He gets by as beefcake but between you and me hes running it damned close
But the test- imagine radcliffe in his pretty woman role
Eesh
― Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 03:05 (five years ago)
David Arquette has somehow received top billing in a few films. Meditate on that for a moment.
― Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 03:05 (five years ago)
Keira knightley could never for a moment pull something about mary, Charlie's angels, the mask, hell even knight and day is a performance of fun and swagger
― Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 03:06 (five years ago)
Is david arquette at the success level required
Would say nowhere near
― Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 03:07 (five years ago)
No Gere is amazing, criminally underused leading manAlso continues to get more bangable even at 71
I felt like I'm the only person whose mom inexplicably had Tin Cup on VHS and I watched it at least four times, it's great
Rene Russo is also underused I don't know why she wasn't cast more
― flamboyant goon tie included, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 03:08 (five years ago)
this obviously isn't the thread to argue that.
― Halfway there but for you,
Argue away!
Pryce is several cuts above malkovich or spacey fgti
― Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 03:08 (five years ago)
jonathan pryce does well-calibrated hamming as MR. DARK and more famously i am fond of the delivery "i am not counting it."
cameron diaz is a star.
― difficult listening hour, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 03:08 (five years ago)
really liked Richard Gere in Altman's Dr. T & the Women
― Dan S, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 03:09 (five years ago)
Ben Affleck. He is not good. He's been in good things but he himself is not good. At acting, I mean.
― Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 03:10 (five years ago)
cameron diaz is the highlight of vanilla sky, for that alone etc.
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 03:10 (five years ago)
Costner is any sports turn, untouchables jfk the one recently with woody open range yadda yadda yadda easy charisma is already so far ahead of remember now the kid who cannot convincingly stand still (srsy watch radcliffe sometime its horrible tbh)
― Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 03:10 (five years ago)
Love vanilla sky no questions thks
― Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 03:11 (five years ago)
OL and I are on a similar wavelength bc Richard Gere just popped into my head. Same for Philippe. I think when I saw this thread my brain immediately went to any actor involved in the Haggis “Crash”. Sorry, Ludacris.
― Western® with Bacon Flavor, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 03:11 (five years ago)
I'm actually more surprised as I scroll by how many actors pass muster with me, tbrr.
― Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 03:12 (five years ago)
casper van dien
― Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 03:13 (five years ago)
Forgot Vanilla Sky, also she's very game in There's Something About Mary. Okay, Diaz rescinded.
― Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 03:13 (five years ago)
Affleck can sit and eat while a better actor speaks lines of dialogue if you asked affleck be i need you to just relax a bit can we go again affleck would try to do that can you imagine how radcliffe would react if asked to relax there is no way it could work
― Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 03:13 (five years ago)
the problem I'm having is we're kinda like, excluding people who had a movie in which they were effective once and , well even the shittiest actors can get a birdie on the fairway every once in a while
― Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 03:14 (five years ago)
Van dien never even got to paul walker fame let alone orlando bloom fame but not an awful shout tbh
― Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 03:14 (five years ago)
Trying to imagine Radcliffe in any Affleck role is killing me rn. O'Bannion!

― Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 03:15 (five years ago)
Is Pryce, though? I just assumed (given his involvement in Brazil) that he must have a Monty Python pass that I didn't know about but he stage-acts through every film he's in and it's abominable to watch (except Glengarry Glen Ross, bc everybody was stage-acting; look, Spacey and Pryce are both swanning all over their film sets in equal measure.)
As for Malkovich, I don't give a fuck about him except that he was a key figure in some excellent Spalding Gray monologues and afaic, a feature in a Spalding Gray monologue is as good as a Lynch/Verhoeven gig insofar as safe words are concerned
― flamboyant goon tie included, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 03:15 (five years ago)
remember now the kid who cannot convincingly stand still (srsy watch radcliffe sometime its horrible tbh)lol ♥️♥️♥️♥️ dmac
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 03:16 (five years ago)
Like i think guy pearce is terrible and getting worse every day, but see for instance the scene where he blasts up the flat in la confidential and he looks vaguely shocked afterwards
Guarantee you cannot imagine radcliffe nor bloom reaching that incredible emotional depth
And id say getting Pearce to that point was like a breech birth tbh
― Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 03:18 (five years ago)
Okay I loved Chris Pratt on Parks and Rec but...I think he might have been terrible in everything else. Including real life, apparently.
― Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 03:19 (five years ago)
fgti i am not here to dictate over my excellent ilx colleagues in this endeavour i am convinced of yr case and pryce is hereby declared no better than malkovich/spacey gavel next
― Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 03:20 (five years ago)
Pratt has charm and goofiness in gotg bloom in that role would dry out the tapeheads
― Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 03:21 (five years ago)
Erm...how do we feel about Julia Roberts?
― Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 03:21 (five years ago)
Well, regardless of your kind admission, I've always fucking hated Guy Pearce
