I knew Jared Leto was trash even at age 15 when everybody else was crushing on Catalano and I was rooting for Brian Krakow and he still is terrible

lol, thank u, fgti, for helping me recall the source of my Leto antipathy. HOW COULD YOU, ANGELA?!?

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:24 (five years ago)

Lynch's POV only maintains because he has the skill as a director to ply a compelling performance out of even the worst actor. In other hands, much of Lynch's lesser players would flop hard.

xxxp Krakow (the character) is pretty yuck in retrospect

I remember seeing Devon [something or other] (Brian Krakow) was starring in an erotic thriller after he decided to be taken seriously, and I literally remembered that fact a few years later when I saw Rupert Grint do the exact same thing

flamboyant goon tie included, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:28 (five years ago)

any good director can ply a compelling performance out of an actor with limited skill-sets, whether it's the stage, or film. it's way less impressive with film because the medium inherently relies less on individual performances to carry the entire thing (though obviously that does still happen in droves).

Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:28 (five years ago)

Tho im glad its a chatty thread like

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:29 (five years ago)

this forest is very old.

Maybe--I don't know. There are so many bad performances in films by good directors, though. (Start with Hitchcock and De Palma.) Did they give up, run out of time, or just not care?

clemenza, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:32 (five years ago)

wouldn't be surprised if it was the latter.

any director can do it....but obviously not all of them do. either they have a weird appreciation for some bad performances, or they just said "ehh, the rest of the film is good and we're behind schedule"

Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:33 (five years ago)

xxxp Krakow (the character) is pretty yuck in retrospect

Oh yeah, in hindsight I cringe at how much I identified with his plight at the time.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:34 (five years ago)

And, neanderthal most recently, spells out the goal

Find the actors who have achieved fame and riches for whom it remains false

A quest

None of the names since can be srs suggestions, i beseech yis

Gabriel Byrne, whose being offered as a contender actually prompted this thread, and for the third time, has not been bettered in a lead role vs his turn in millers crossing

Steven segal doesn't count because the "not considered an actor" thing

Stallone has charmed and delivered in many roles, and has been good in several, excellent in at least two (copland, creed- id argue a few of the rockys at least tho!)

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:35 (five years ago)

Tbh "terrible performances in good movies/for good directors" is also an interesting discussion imo

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:36 (five years ago)

Meryl Streep

mildew and sanctimony (soda), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:38 (five years ago)

Aw would you not!

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:39 (five years ago)

My assumption is that 98% of actors are professionals who are doing their best to follow the director's instructions. Just as I don't think I've gone to see a film because a certain actor was in, I can't recall any film that I thought was ruined by bad acting (OK, maybe Brando in The Missouri Breaks).

Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:40 (five years ago)

I do not mean that as a hot take, I just hate when she comes on screen. Every role she plays is MERYL STREEP AS ______.

mildew and sanctimony (soda), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:40 (five years ago)

Ben Kingsley, after his 16th take in Shutter Island: "Is that better, Marty? I think I nailed it that time."

Scorsese: "Ah, fuck it, do whatever you want."

clemenza, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:41 (five years ago)

Long Black Line was her best role imo

I think this is uncharitable and does not understand what actors do.

mildew and sanctimony (soda), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:41 (five years ago)

Oh you know someone more recent who's been celebrated way out of proportion to her ability is Shailene Woodley. I just dngi.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:42 (five years ago)

But the bar is radcliffe, bloom, knightley

Tisnt "plays the role as themselves" its "cannot perform a role at all"

we're talking bumping into the camera level here

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:42 (five years ago)

Karl urban p good as bournemeat and bones imo

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:43 (five years ago)

Fair, darragh. In which case, I nominate Orson Welles, whose greatest accomplishment was making himself seem competent as an actor.

mildew and sanctimony (soda), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:44 (five years ago)

this would be a lot easier if someone would make it clear what the bar is

John Wesley Glasscock (Hadrian VIII), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:44 (five years ago)

it was bones that made me feel like i was actually tripping. good as dredd tho yes. "only good as dredd" is presumably the platonic counterargument to "range is fake"

Imagine radcliffe in any role/performance offered and know in your bones you are a liar tho

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:46 (five years ago)

I think Ryan Phillipe is a pretty terrible actor but I'm not sure who would disagree with that too strongly and I'm also unsure of who but me is even thinking of Ryan Phillipe in 2021.

lol it's true that other directors deploy him as a prop. (even reed?)

still tho no.

difficult listening hour, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:48 (five years ago)

Have you seen _Big Little Lies_, OL? I thought Woodley was good in that.

I did. She was okay. It's the best I've seen her be. If 'okay' is your ceiling, you might belong itt.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:49 (five years ago)

deems, I think you're going too hard on Radcliffe inasmuch as he is a child actor who is now an adult, so on that front he's actually doing okay for himself, he may not be any competition for the classically-trained crew but let him have his fun if it keeps him off the drugs I say

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:52 (five years ago)

Radcliffe as black swan

Just sitting there, blinking owlpotterishly, like his mother first demanded when he was 8 and scared and cameras flashing and he just wanted to please everyone

Poor fucker, soul half-formed, praised for looking about right while the same ghoul who feasted on m culkins innocence descended upon him with a script by jk fuckin rowling, sorry kid this is your life now

I mean imagine the deserted wreck of a human thus formed in black swan

Ive no idea where bloom emerged from. The pinch of a demon through the cloth of a darker fucking universe than this, and we let it spawn with katy perry and on the cusp of this squall of horror ive smart fuckers slagging off meryl streep well tear it all down i say ill go smiling if even one of youse animals is dragged with me meryl streep honest to christ

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:53 (five years ago)
