I knew Jared Leto was trash even at age 15 when everybody else was crushing on Catalano and I was rooting for Brian Krakow and he still is terrible

Lynch's POV only maintains because he has the skill as a director to ply a compelling performance out of even the worst actor. In other hands, much of Lynch's lesser players would flop hard.

I remember seeing Devon [something or other] (Brian Krakow) was starring in an erotic thriller after he decided to be taken seriously, and I literally remembered that fact a few years later when I saw Rupert Grint do the exact same thing

any good director can ply a compelling performance out of an actor with limited skill-sets, whether it's the stage, or film. it's way less impressive with film because the medium inherently relies less on individual performances to carry the entire thing (though obviously that does still happen in droves).

Maybe--I don't know. There are so many bad performances in films by good directors, though. (Start with Hitchcock and De Palma.) Did they give up, run out of time, or just not care?

wouldn't be surprised if it was the latter.

any director can do it....but obviously not all of them do. either they have a weird appreciation for some bad performances, or they just said "ehh, the rest of the film is good and we're behind schedule"

Stallone has charmed and delivered in many roles, and has been good in several, excellent in at least two (copland, creed- id argue a few of the rockys at least tho!)

Tbh "terrible performances in good movies/for good directors" is also an interesting discussion imo

My assumption is that 98% of actors are professionals who are doing their best to follow the director's instructions. Just as I don't think I've gone to see a film because a certain actor was in, I can't recall any film that I thought was ruined by bad acting (OK, maybe Brando in The Missouri Breaks).

I do not mean that as a hot take, I just hate when she comes on screen. Every role she plays is MERYL STREEP AS ______.

I think Ryan Phillipe is a pretty terrible actor but I'm not sure who would disagree with that too strongly and I'm also unsure of who but me is even thinking of Ryan Phillipe in 2021.

deems, I think you're going too hard on Radcliffe inasmuch as he is a child actor who is now an adult, so on that front he's actually doing okay for himself, he may not be any competition for the classically-trained crew but let him have his fun if it keeps him off the drugs I say
