i literally can't think of anybody btw (anybody who counts; i thought of james corden). suspect myself of thinking even ineptitude only awaits a context.

someone who keeps giving performances other people find serviceable and i do not is karl urban.

difficult listening hour, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 00:37 (five years ago)

i happen to know someone 👀 who is in the unfortunate position where they absolutely detest rachel weisz

really disliked The Deep Blue Sea and her and everyone else in it, it almost put me off of her, but have liked her otherwise

Dan S, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 01:03 (five years ago)

Had to Google that because I was thinking "The movie with the superintelligent sharks and LL Cool J? I don't remember Rachel Weisz in that..."

Karl Urban's only good performance was Dredd

Joe Biden Stan Account (milo z), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 01:09 (five years ago)

I've been neck-deep in Depression-era film over the past half a year or so and am struggling to think of anyone from that era who has been unjustly feted, as I've been pleasantly surprised that the big names have really lived up to their rep. W.C. Fields is maybe kinda terrible? I don't know if he really qualifies though because he's just a walking vaudeville act.

Helen Hayes may or may not have been a great stage actor. But I've never seen a film performance of hers that lived up to the legend. Superficial impressions of Lillian Gish ≠ good acting.

Lionel Barrymore took the Best Actor Oscar for A Free Soul (1931). "Scenery chewing" barely begins to describe his performance.

Infanta Terrible (j.lu), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 01:17 (five years ago)

Lillian Gish was great in Night of the Hunter; I don't think I've actually seen her in anything earlier.

Just jumping in way back to defend Stallone, Cop Land is a better performance than many "great actors" have on the books, just rewatched First Blood, Rambo vs Dennehy is pulp heaven

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 01:25 (five years ago)

Cop Land is clearly Stallone bothering to try, and then never bothering again, though

like Travolta is great in about six films across three calendar decades, and rarely bearable otherwise

(anybody who counts; i thought of james corden)

he is irritatingly far less bad at acting than at any of his other career bowstrings

shivers me timber (sic), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 01:27 (five years ago)

Lionel Barrymore's alright. He's not a great actor (the Barrymore pedigree may be overstated a touch) but he's a charming weirdo in most of what I've seen him in (eg Tod Browning's The Devil Doll, wherein he plays a cross-dressing rogue who shrinks his nemeses down to doll size).

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 01:28 (five years ago)

I actually think Ed Harris type actors are the best, they know what they do and if you cast them in that kind of role they show up and do it

Range is the most overrated thing in acting

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 01:29 (five years ago)

FTR, I was by no means nominating Stallone for worst actor upthread. I just watched all the Rockys and realized, actual acting ability aside, I think I love him.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 01:31 (five years ago)

Oh whoops just realized I misread the comment upthread & thought it was actually about Lillian Gish. Never mind.

I am not a psychic community (Lily Dale), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 01:35 (five years ago)

agree that most actors don't have that much range. they are always themselves for the most part, you either like them or not

Dan S, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 01:36 (five years ago)

Yes, I have no problem with actors who are mostly the same in every role.

Waterloo Subset (Tom D.), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 01:37 (five years ago)

John C. Reilly was in Step Brothers for chrissakes show some respect

I feel like this thread is just gonna end up naming every actor

man Remi Malek in The Little Things is as weird and awkward and bad a performance as I've seen

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 01:40 (five years ago)

Maybe we need a thread for actors who actually live up to the hype. Keepin it posi and irie in 2021

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 01:41 (five years ago)

Natalie Portman is the name in blinding lights. But I'd also like to nod to Diane Keaton. Each has the power to make me dive for the remote.

assert (MatthewK), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 01:41 (five years ago)

I was actually thinking about nomming Malek for a future spot itt, particularly since he's already won an Oscar and is certain to make us all suffer for it

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 01:42 (five years ago)

Stallone was very good in First Blood. I've never seen Cop Land.

Diane Keaton has always been delightful and kind of goofy, I can't think of her as a bad actor

Dan S, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 01:48 (five years ago)

diane keaton is extremely bad as kay imo but yeah i mostly like her. i saw most of baby boom the other day like lol why am i not turning this off

difficult listening hour, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 01:51 (five years ago)

(kay is not a rewarding role)

difficult listening hour, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 01:56 (five years ago)

It's not, no. She has a couple of nice moments early on, then she's a scold for the rest of the film. She's great in Looking for Mr. Goodbar, which I just watched the other night.

John Wesley Glasscock (Hadrian VIII), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:05 (five years ago)

distractingly weird

John Wesley Glasscock (Hadrian VIII), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:06 (five years ago)

Nicole Kidman was so great in To Die For that I'll never say a bad word about her
Remi Malek was fine in Mr Robot
Ed Harris I thought was bad, Truman Show included, but I liked him in Westworld
Eddie Redmayne/Andrew Garfield/Ben Wishaw are all the same gay-baiting English nothing, they aren't hired to act, they're hired to look good before they hit their expiry dates
Natalie Portman is amazing what is wrong with you
Keanu Reeves, like Tom Cruise, serves a function
Joan Allen is a terrible, terrible actress, but she's been acting badly in so many good films and never ruining them, so...

I'm pretty sure Gary Oldman is bad, he sucks in Luc Besson movies, I didn't like him as Smiley, I hated him as Commish Gordon
Gabriel Byrne fucking sucks in every movie he's ever been in, I'm glad he died in Hereditary, also he's the spitting image of my dad
I have had two fights because I think Emma Stone is total garbage (although she was charming in Superbad)
I knew Jared Leto was trash even at age 15 when everybody else was crushing on Catalano and I was rooting for Brian Krakow and he still is terrible, he's the Ariel Pink of acting
and afaic the most "ugh why is she in this" actor I can think of is unfortunately Rosario Dawson

paul giamatti let's dial it down about eight notches, we get it, you are really enjoying every role

great post fgti

I like that David Lynch tried to get the most stilted and unnatural performances out of his actors for Twin Peaks: The Return

Dan S, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:11 (five years ago)

I have a question and it is: is John Turturro bad? I hate his performances in everything but I love pretty-much everything he's been in, Barton Fink my favourite Coen movie, The Night Of was awesome, etc.

flamboyant goon tie included, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:13 (five years ago)

thought he was really good in Gloria Bell

Lynch's point of view makes me rethink the whole actor thing

Dan S, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:15 (five years ago)

Haven't seen Gloria Bell but Turturro/Moore does sound like a good romantic pairing tbh

flamboyant goon tie included, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:17 (five years ago)

I like actors too much for this thread.

I think Turturro is excellent in Jungle Fever and--the character is loathsome--Miller's Crossing. I like him in Rounders and Do the Right Thing, too.

I like Oldman in JFK, Dracula, and The Contender. Not so much Mank.

all you need is love imo

lol, thank u, fgti, for helping me recall the source of my Leto antipathy. HOW COULD YOU, ANGELA?!?

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:24 (five years ago)

Lynch's POV only maintains because he has the skill as a director to ply a compelling performance out of even the worst actor. In other hands, much of Lynch's lesser players would flop hard.

xxxp Krakow (the character) is pretty yuck in retrospect

I remember seeing Devon [something or other] (Brian Krakow) was starring in an erotic thriller after he decided to be taken seriously, and I literally remembered that fact a few years later when I saw Rupert Grint do the exact same thing

flamboyant goon tie included, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 02:28 (five years ago)

any good director can ply a compelling performance out of an actor with limited skill-sets, whether it's the stage, or film. it's way less impressive with film because the medium inherently relies less on individual performances to carry the entire thing (though obviously that does still happen in droves).
