really disliked The Deep Blue Sea and her and everyone else in it, it almost put me off of her, but have liked her otherwise

Karl Urban's only good performance was Dredd

I've been neck-deep in Depression-era film over the past half a year or so and am struggling to think of anyone from that era who has been unjustly feted, as I've been pleasantly surprised that the big names have really lived up to their rep. W.C. Fields is maybe kinda terrible? I don't know if he really qualifies though because he's just a walking vaudeville act.

Helen Hayes may or may not have been a great stage actor. But I've never seen a film performance of hers that lived up to the legend. Superficial impressions of Lillian Gish ≠ good acting.

Lionel Barrymore took the Best Actor Oscar for A Free Soul (1931). "Scenery chewing" barely begins to describe his performance.

Lillian Gish was great in Night of the Hunter; I don't think I've actually seen her in anything earlier.

Just jumping in way back to defend Stallone, Cop Land is a better performance than many "great actors" have on the books, just rewatched First Blood, Rambo vs Dennehy is pulp heaven

Cop Land is clearly Stallone bothering to try, and then never bothering again, though

like Travolta is great in about six films across three calendar decades, and rarely bearable otherwise

he is irritatingly far less bad at acting than at any of his other career bowstrings

Lionel Barrymore's alright. He's not a great actor (the Barrymore pedigree may be overstated a touch) but he's a charming weirdo in most of what I've seen him in (eg Tod Browning's The Devil Doll, wherein he plays a cross-dressing rogue who shrinks his nemeses down to doll size).

I actually think Ed Harris type actors are the best, they know what they do and if you cast them in that kind of role they show up and do it

Range is the most overrated thing in acting

FTR, I was by no means nominating Stallone for worst actor upthread. I just watched all the Rockys and realized, actual acting ability aside, I think I love him.

agree that most actors don't have that much range. they are always themselves for the most part, you either like them or not

Natalie Portman is the name in blinding lights. But I'd also like to nod to Diane Keaton. Each has the power to make me dive for the remote.

I was actually thinking about nomming Malek for a future spot itt, particularly since he's already won an Oscar and is certain to make us all suffer for it

Stallone was very good in First Blood. I've never seen Cop Land.

Diane Keaton has always been delightful and kind of goofy, I can't think of her as a bad actor

It's not, no. She has a couple of nice moments early on, then she's a scold for the rest of the film. She's great in Looking for Mr. Goodbar, which I just watched the other night.

Ed Harris I thought was bad, Truman Show included, but I liked him in Westworld
Eddie Redmayne/Andrew Garfield/Ben Wishaw are all the same gay-baiting English nothing, they aren't hired to act, they're hired to look good before they hit their expiry dates

Gabriel Byrne fucking sucks in every movie he's ever been in, I'm glad he died in Hereditary, also he's the spitting image of my dad
I have had two fights because I think Emma Stone is total garbage (although she was charming in Superbad)

I have a question and it is: is John Turturro bad? I hate his performances in everything but I love pretty-much everything he's been in, Barton Fink my favourite Coen movie, The Night Of was awesome, etc.

I think Turturro is excellent in Jungle Fever and--the character is loathsome--Miller's Crossing. I like him in Rounders and Do the Right Thing, too.

I like Oldman in JFK, Dracula, and The Contender. Not so much Mank.

Lynch's POV only maintains because he has the skill as a director to ply a compelling performance out of even the worst actor. In other hands, much of Lynch's lesser players would flop hard.

I remember seeing Devon [something or other] (Brian Krakow) was starring in an erotic thriller after he decided to be taken seriously, and I literally remembered that fact a few years later when I saw Rupert Grint do the exact same thing

any good director can ply a compelling performance out of an actor with limited skill-sets, whether it's the stage, or film. it's way less impressive with film because the medium inherently relies less on individual performances to carry the entire thing (though obviously that does still happen in droves).
