i argue that redmayne is ONLY good in jupiter ascending

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 18:07 (five years ago)

i guess if you think 'doing a funny voice sometimes' is acting

plax (ico), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 18:07 (five years ago)

john c reilly just kindof insinuates that he was in steppenwolf i think

plax (ico), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 18:08 (five years ago)

Xpost Which would make Forrest Whitaker the best actor ever

Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 18:08 (five years ago)

I'll give you a pass if you want to challenge John C. Reilly as a dramatic actor, I don't have much skin in that game, but he's unimpeachable as a comic actor.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 18:08 (five years ago)

Ah no. He’s so great in Magnolia.

wangdalf the blight (gyac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 18:10 (five years ago)

Xpost He wasn't bad in We Need to Talk About Kevin, but he really broadstroked the character compared to how his personality was portrayed in the book

But Ezra Klein was outright miscast so that whole movie whiffed

Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 18:11 (five years ago)

lol ezra klein

tiwa-nty one savage (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 18:11 (five years ago)

magnolia is awful but i dont remember him being in it

plax (ico), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 18:13 (five years ago)

Ben Whishaw, except for Paddingtons

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 18:14 (five years ago)

willowy boys I enjoy looking at cannot be called bad actors imo

Canon in Deez (silby), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 18:15 (five years ago)

Catching up...Also think Byrne is amazing in Miller's Crossing; Kirk Douglas, same for Paths of Glory. Again, it's hard for me to think of anyone--within reason; I don't mean Pauly Shore-level--where I don't like at least one performance.

clemenza, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 18:17 (five years ago)

Also think Reilly is excellent in Magnolia.

I'm messing up this thread's whole concept.

clemenza, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 18:18 (five years ago)

Mike Myers
Matt Dillon
Matthew Fox

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 18:22 (five years ago)

Hey pal the worst M-actor thread is thataway!

Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 18:23 (five years ago)

Kirk Douglas makes a terrific baddie in Out of the Past.

stimmy stimmy yah (Simon H.), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 18:23 (five years ago)

And an excellent hapless one in The Strange Love of Martha Ivers.

clemenza, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 18:24 (five years ago)

Agree that Beckinsale is a nonentity. She's good in the Stillman movie, but I think of that as a tribute to Stillman, because Chloe Sevigny is also good in it and she's one of the worst, most useless actresses on Earth.

I mentioned this on Twitter the other day - I think Pacino's brain broke sometime around the making of Cruising; he was great before that, and great in it, but he's been a shouty self-parody pretty much ever since.

but also fuck you (unperson), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 18:25 (five years ago)

John C. Riley was also ace in Polanski's Carnage, which was a pretty weird film.

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 18:25 (five years ago)

The kid from Fright Night and 976-EVIL who went on to make porno films.

Franklin from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Sammy Petrillo.

"because she's got a GREAT ASS" classic tho

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 18:26 (five years ago)

I thought Keira Knightley was absolutely appalling in Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method.

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 18:27 (five years ago)

Bury me with his Dunkacino clip

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 18:28 (five years ago)

I'm sorry what

stimmy stimmy yah (Simon H.), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 18:31 (five years ago)

Keira Knightley is almost approaching Bloom levels for me.

wangdalf the blight (gyac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 18:38 (five years ago)

The 2 of them together in pirates is something special alright

Yelp for gyros (wins), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 18:40 (five years ago)

Kirk Douglas makes a terrific baddie in Out of the Past.

Certainly does.

Keira Knightley is hopeless.

Waterloo Subset (Tom D.), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 19:12 (five years ago)

Knightley's own mother couldn't tell her and Portman apart on the set of The Phantom Menace. Which perhaps says something.

Vladislav Bibidonurtmi (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 19:16 (five years ago)

that one was heavily, heavily made up?

Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 19:17 (five years ago)

Redmayne yes

Knightley absolutely

Leto noted previously

None of the rest are close i dont think tbh

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 23:37 (five years ago)

Garfield better than good in red riding and beckinsale good in the austen thing

Beckinsale also funny in person, this is u&k

Knightley, redmayne utterly charmless vacuums in person, nervy nothings like radcliffe

Dunno bout bloom but feel safe presuming

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 23:39 (five years ago)

He's obviously not a "bad actor", but when I saw Christopher Plummer as Lear at Stratford, I was mortified when he came out to do the mad scene on the heath. It was so half-hearted, his whole attitude seemed to be, "c'mon, you don't expect me to actually act crazy?!? I'm Christopher Plummer!"

Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 23:45 (five years ago)

My rules may seem strict but tbf theyre saving madonna from certain entry

lol not gonna say ~tastefulness~ is the worst trap in shakespeare but it might be the hardest to learn to avoid

difficult listening hour, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 00:06 (five years ago)

actor must have had elements of a noteworthy movie career so kyle secor, for instance, aint it

trying to figure out what Kyle Secor did to be singled out like this.

I am not a psychic community (Lily Dale), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 00:11 (five years ago)

just "hardest to avoid" i should say; don't mean that christopher plummer literally doesn't know you can underplay xp

difficult listening hour, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 00:14 (five years ago)

thought Christopher Plummer was really moving in Beginners, don't remember him in anything else

Dan S, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 00:19 (five years ago)

Kirk Douglas makes a terrific baddie in Out of the Past.

i happen to know someone 👀 who is in the unfortunate position where they absolutely detest rachel weisz but like the films of yorgios lanthimos

imago, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 00:24 (five years ago)

i literally can't think of anybody btw (anybody who counts; i thought of james corden). suspect myself of thinking even ineptitude only awaits a context.

difficult listening hour, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 00:31 (five years ago)

someone who keeps giving performances other people find serviceable and i do not is karl urban.

Canon in Deez (silby), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 00:47 (five years ago)

really disliked The Deep Blue Sea and her and everyone else in it, it almost put me off of her, but have liked her otherwise

Dan S, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 01:03 (five years ago)

Had to Google that because I was thinking "The movie with the superintelligent sharks and LL Cool J? I don't remember Rachel Weisz in that..."

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 01:05 (five years ago)

Karl Urban's only good performance was Dredd

Joe Biden Stan Account (milo z), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 01:09 (five years ago)

I've been neck-deep in Depression-era film over the past half a year or so and am struggling to think of anyone from that era who has been unjustly feted, as I've been pleasantly surprised that the big names have really lived up to their rep. W.C. Fields is maybe kinda terrible? I don't know if he really qualifies though because he's just a walking vaudeville act.

Helen Hayes may or may not have been a great stage actor. But I've never seen a film performance of hers that lived up to the legend. Superficial impressions of Lillian Gish ≠ good acting.

Lionel Barrymore took the Best Actor Oscar for A Free Soul (1931). "Scenery chewing" barely begins to describe his performance.

Infanta Terrible (j.lu), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 01:17 (five years ago)

Lillian Gish was great in Night of the Hunter; I don't think I've actually seen her in anything earlier.

I am not a psychic community (Lily Dale), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 01:22 (five years ago)

Just jumping in way back to defend Stallone, Cop Land is a better performance than many "great actors" have on the books, just rewatched First Blood, Rambo vs Dennehy is pulp heaven

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 01:25 (five years ago)

Cop Land is clearly Stallone bothering to try, and then never bothering again, though

like Travolta is great in about six films across three calendar decades, and rarely bearable otherwise

(anybody who counts; i thought of james corden)

he is irritatingly far less bad at acting than at any of his other career bowstrings
