#3 worst actor nomination thread

I watched the early Katherine Hepburn film Morning Glory a few days ago which I felt was a really instructive depiction of what I consider bad acting inasmuch as she was truly fantastic in the role but she was portraying a would-be actress who everyone thought was a loopy fruitcake until she actually acted and blew everyone away with her performance but I was all like, wait, her in-character is acting of the Jon Lovitz 'ACTING!' variety and actually Not Good. Is that what people actually like? Very self-consciously actorly acting? Academy Award Nominee for Best Actor acting? Sheesh.

I'm going to comb through the list of Academy Award Nominees for Best Actor real quick and find some worthy entries for this thread.

The only non-GoT thing I've seen Sophie Turner in is the X-Men movies and I find it really hard to blame her for those, esp the more recent one.

Hayden Christensen is terrible at acting but I couldn't possibly ding anyone who played the central role in the best movie of all time, Shattered Glass.

Radcliffe, bloom stand out as incredible poor in movie franchises almost defined by a lack of acting prowess on display, iirc turner is one of many merely forgettable given the kind of shite you have to say in superhero movies

Hopkins is a fun overactor when he gets to fuss and fidget (Howards End).

I thought Hepburn was terrible as a bad actress, actually. She didn't deserve the four Oscars she won -- she deserved them for four other films.

I’m going to controversially suggest that Best Actress especially for a while in the noughties is a more ready source of material, especially the period where it was just big A list actors winning for doing something a bit out of range. Like there’s no way Sandra Bullock should have ever been nominated for an Oscar, let alone winning one, yet here we are.

Denise richards is an honorary model-turned-actress as per above, bullock is good comedically etc at least

Jeremy Renner is pretty bad but I wouldn’t say he’s Orlando Bloom bad.

Gwyneth Paltrow was very good in Sliding Doors, far better than Sandra Bullock in anything I’ve ever seen. No way she deserved an Oscar though.

I can think of one actor I find especially wooden, but he's so revered, I won't name him, and won't confirm or deny. It's hard for me to think of someone where I don't like at least something they've done (I even like the wooden actor in one or two things). For a while I might have said Joan Allen, but that's in part a function of her characters, and she's pretty good in The Contender. Obviously, some of the worst acting ever is from great actors when they pass into self-parody--Pacino, De Niro, etc.

Ed Harris is a good candidate when he's in full-throttle George Kennedy mode (Apollo 13). He's very understated as Howard Hunt in Nixon, though.

If you already think Mark Hamill is bad, I would direct you to watch him reprising his role from the '90s Flash television series in the current Flash television series. It was a performance that, if he was not a name actor, would likely have gotten him fired and replaced on the spot.

The Truman Show is good and I remember Ed Harris being in The Truman Show but I don't remember Ed Harris being good in The Truman Show.

Can I at least call Kevin Costner one of the most limited actors? His aw-shucks style works in some roles, but as such things go, Jimmy Stewart he's not.

Laurence Olivier. Neil Diamond was miles better than him in "The Jazz Singer".

Something was going on with Olivier in the late '70s. It wasn't just The Jazz Singer ("I hef no son!") but also The Boys From Brazil, The Betsy, A Little Romance... he was just really leaning into accents to a distracting effect

Nah Scarlett was great in Lost in Translation, a film I am very undecided about actually liking even though I love both the leads in it. I love the way she says “Evelyn Waugh was a man,”. I liked her in The Prestige as well.
