If you can guess a pop. 20,000 town in Uruguay within less than 24h based on two adjacent photos, then perhaps the true hard mode is a random nondescript highway in the middle of nowhere.

last few times I tried geoguesser it was always like that: some random dirt road in rural Brazil or Australia or Russia, zero text anywhere, often no buildings

rob, Friday, 29 January 2021 14:14 (five years ago)

The first photo was impossible though, even if we'd been able to figure out the logo

The church was first on the list of "cathedrals in Uruguay"

cherry blossom, Friday, 29 January 2021 14:15 (five years ago)

I am less impressed with movie spies now I have to say

rob, Friday, 29 January 2021 14:16 (five years ago)

Respect to the owner of the green car. Maybe it belongs to the parish.

nashwan, Friday, 29 January 2021 14:19 (five years ago)

Looking at street view now that little green shed has moved

True. I should have posted the Museo Spikerman second and the Catedral last.

pomenitul, Friday, 29 January 2021 14:20 (five years ago)

First photo was at least enough to lean towards Spanish/Spanish heritage I think

Insofar as "random highways" I think this might actually be somewhat easy

Reykjavik

or something, Friday, 29 January 2021 14:31 (five years ago)

Yep

Hafnarfjörður to be exact

Figured somebody'd immediately be like "that is a smelting plant"

flamboyant goon tie included, Friday, 29 January 2021 14:32 (five years ago)

Was there a few years ago. That's on the way from the airport to the city, it's huge

or something, Friday, 29 January 2021 14:39 (five years ago)

That pipe mounted to the side of it is like half-a-kilometer long and it gets smaller and smaller and it's pretty transfixing to see as you drive past it

flamboyant goon tie included, Friday, 29 January 2021 15:21 (five years ago)

Okay, hope this works.

The last few have burned up almost all my remaining brain cells and this already looks another tough nut to crack

Another one with distinctive streetlights. I got nothing so far other than 'looks like somewhere in Russia'.

cherry blossom, Saturday, 30 January 2021 16:02 (five years ago)

I was thinking somewhere in Eastern Germany but this is a totally unscientific hunch on my part.

pomenitul, Saturday, 30 January 2021 16:07 (five years ago)

Plenty in that pic that could be dublin 12 tbh so im not seeing much to grasp at

Qanondorf (darraghmac), Saturday, 30 January 2021 16:18 (five years ago)

I was going to semi-seriously say Detroit

rob, Saturday, 30 January 2021 16:20 (five years ago)

I'll post another later today.

Do they have cars like that in Motor City? Looks European to me, but I don't even have a driver's licence, so don't mind me.

pomenitul, Saturday, 30 January 2021 16:23 (five years ago)

That streetlamp is like a beautiful graceful heron

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 30 January 2021 16:24 (five years ago)

Xp no, the cars generally argue against North America

rob, Saturday, 30 January 2021 16:43 (five years ago)

Currently, around 300 trolleybus systems are in operation, in cities and towns in 43 countries.

does narrow things down somewhat. apartments definitely have a post-communist country look

circles, Saturday, 30 January 2021 16:43 (five years ago)

The visible electrical wires also look vaguely Eastern European to me. Maybe more Central European since this place doesn't look too run down.

pomenitul, Saturday, 30 January 2021 16:48 (five years ago)

The banner on the lightpost looks, to me, a lot like the banners you see on college campuses promoting the college?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 30 January 2021 16:54 (five years ago)

Its a little dusty to be a college banner, I think thats a politician

cherry blossom, Saturday, 30 January 2021 17:01 (five years ago)

the street lights look like Concorde or some kind of jet plane?

StanM, Saturday, 30 January 2021 17:02 (five years ago)

I think so too. Not to mention that such banners are more of a North American thing, no?

xp

pomenitul, Saturday, 30 January 2021 17:02 (five years ago)

the people look too white for it to be Kourou (French Guyana, ESA launch site) imho - nor would I expect to see a Renault or Peugeot in Baikonur

StanM, Saturday, 30 January 2021 17:03 (five years ago)

I've seen those kinds of banners in Europe.

Not that I know where this is. The number of people walking around points me toward Europe rather than North America though.

All cars are bad (Euler), Saturday, 30 January 2021 17:19 (five years ago)

The college ones? A political ad seems way likelier imo.

pomenitul, Saturday, 30 January 2021 17:20 (five years ago)

yes at the newly dumbly named Université de Paris for example

All cars are bad (Euler), Saturday, 30 January 2021 17:21 (five years ago)

though I agree that these are not likely college banners

All cars are bad (Euler), Saturday, 30 January 2021 17:21 (five years ago)

Fair enough. I guess this photo doesn't strike me as very campus-y, although it's not impossible.

Also, are we certain that those suspended wires indicate the presence of a trolleybus system?

pomenitul, Saturday, 30 January 2021 17:23 (five years ago)

Why is politician partly whited out and is he holding some kind of torch?

cherry blossom, Saturday, 30 January 2021 17:27 (five years ago)

It def can’t be North America, hardly any trolleybuses here, and it def gives an eastern Central Europe post soviet vibe. Somewhere in Romania?

Boring United Methodist Church (Boring, Maryland), Saturday, 30 January 2021 19:23 (five years ago)

Sizable trolley bus network in Seattle but it’s not Seattle

Canon in Deez (silby), Saturday, 30 January 2021 19:27 (five years ago)

Seems a bit too clean to be Romania but I might be wrong. We've still got trolleybuses in some cities, that much is true.

pomenitul, Saturday, 30 January 2021 19:28 (five years ago)

Also, are we certain that those suspended wires indicate the presence of a trolleybus system?

― pomenitul, Saturday, January 30, 2021 12:23 PM (two hours ago)

also not sold on this trolley idea fwiw

rob, Saturday, 30 January 2021 19:40 (five years ago)

The parallel cables do point towards it, I suppose.

pomenitul, Saturday, 30 January 2021 19:44 (five years ago)

Vilnius, maybe?

pomenitul, Saturday, 30 January 2021 19:45 (five years ago)

We're ignoring the mural

cherry blossom, Saturday, 30 January 2021 19:47 (five years ago)

and not paying enough attention to the politician

cherry blossom, Saturday, 30 January 2021 19:47 (five years ago)

Needs more jpeg.

pomenitul, Saturday, 30 January 2021 19:48 (five years ago)

I feel like I've seen the character in the right hand side of the mural somewhere before

Shirley Temple?

Long Tall Arsetee & the Shaker Intros (breastcrawl), Saturday, 30 January 2021 20:14 (five years ago)

I'm intrigued by the sign next to the red gate, looks like it's representing a church or something like that. Like it's telling us "this hasn't always been a shithole, there used to be a beautiful church around here"

Dinsdale, Saturday, 30 January 2021 20:25 (five years ago)

wish list (apart from higher resolution photos obv)
- ability to maximize pictures by more than the current 500%
- larger computer screen
